I don't think there is any conventional military that would want to engage the US in an all-out slugfest in this day and age. That's going to be changing in the next few years as Russia further reconstitutes its military and China continues it growth - which is one of the reasons cancelling programs such as the F22 is so insane.
Reconstituting their military or not, no one is about to take a war to Russia's doorstep. If you think insurgants are bad you havn't studied warfare in that part of the world.
Could be said about a lot of countries, the soviets could have wiped all population in Afganisthan and win flawlessly. And say hello to escalation and nuclear war.
If it wasnt for the Geneva convention the US would dominate any country in the world in a matter of days
I doubt that. The US may have the best armed forces, but an invasion of Russia or China would still be suicidal. Even if it didn't end in all-out nuclear war.
IIRC thats what German officers said about Normandy. China has a reputation for terrible craftsmanship, and Russia has so many outdated weapons left from the Cold War that they are still using to this day. I'm not saying that the US would not have substantial losses in manpower, but those two countries aren't what they used to be, including the US. The thing with the US is, that we are stretched so thin at the moment, we could not afford another war in an entirely different region and be able to keep reserves on the home front.
I really don't think this line of discussion has a happy future in this forum...
lol i agree. I was thinking the same thing as i typed my last response. It will end up being a "My country is better than yours" deal. Hopefully with this nuclear arms treaty, we can one day see peace.

What they have is huge size. A piece of worthless rocks like Afghanistan has been a nightmare for invading armies for centuries. Now scale that with a factor of 100. And remeber that you have to move your army across the globe and assemble it, before the enemy launches a premptive strike.
It is the same reason that the Russian invasion of The US in MW2 was ridiculous

I doubt it. We managed to kill each other well enough before there were Nuclear Weapons. Or guns for that matter
I don't quite understand why Russia had the capability of going ape**** on the entire world, or what reason they had to do this, for that matter. Even with a Scalar weapon they wouldn't be able to plow every country that borders them.
The world was safer when MAD was the deterrent. It is not so much now. Yeah, sure it is a deterrent to the super powers or even the has-been super powers but it is no deterrent to a determined insurgency.

Exactly, then add the most horrible weather you would want to go to war in. The further you get into the country the harder it's going to be to keep supplies rolling in. Modern day or not there is a reason Russia has never lost a war on it's home soil. Vietnam would feel like a vacation with no disrespect to our vets that fought in Vietnam.
I'm pretty sure China doesn't have the ability to operate on a global scale.
It's commonly believed that the US has the most capable military. Most of this is because the US Navy and US Air Force are the largest in the world. They have the ability to operate in all 7 seas and carry out missions on a larger scale. This is a feat that China wouldn't be able to accomplish. The UK, Russia and even France have shown there ability to operate on large scales also. China does have an exceptionally large military with the ability to be extremely powerful in the short to medium range. I am not saying they couldn't be a threat to other countries or that there military isn't powerful. I'm also not saying they aren't making big changes in their navy.
The major thing to look at though is when you combine the US with most of the EU you have a Navy that would be very difficult to counter. They are the most experienced which would play a big part in a world war.
