I don't know what suddenly inspired developers worldwide to give their games stupidly narrow vision and adapt 75 or lower as standard 4:3 FOV, but I sure as hell don't agree with it. We're getting the old 4:3 FOV on widescreen monitors and 4:3 users get shafted even more.

There simply isn't any reason NOT to support unlocked FOV.
Consoles. Sitting on a couch 6-10' away means the television/monitor takes up less of your FOV. They zoom everything so you can see from your couch. They design the whole game around that experience. Then they port it over to the PC and try to maintain that same experience without regard to the fact that on a PC we generally sit 2-3' away from the monitor.

Everything changed almost overnight when consoles became the dominant platform in sales for FPS games. Blame Halo 2. It was one of the earliest games that used a ~65 degree FOV, and it sold enough to set the standard we see today.

Re: Widescreen Support is Cheating. WHAT!?

I have a question or two, and a little bit to say about the situation. First of all, I'm a user of a 22" widescreen with a 16:10 (1680x1050 is 16:10, right?) aspect ratio. What will the game look like on full screen? Will things look "wider"(stretched) or will they have black bars somewhere?

As for my opinion, I think this is a waste of time for dice to work on. Why work on something that the targeted gaming community does NOT want? FOV has never been a balance issue or concern for FPS players on the PC. This is not the type of balance we care about, and we'd actually PREFER to leave it as it is in other FPS games. This is my first time using a widescreen monitor and I see no large advantage at all.

To top it off, PC will never be balanced perfectly hardware wise. What matters is the actual gameplay. Balance that and stop worrying about things that you'll just waste time on just to upset your players in the end. It's counter intuitive.

PC will always have gamers with hardware advantages over other players, that's the nature of a customizable platform. Some players have better Internet, a better mouse/keyboard or just a general advantage in FPS(Frames Per Second) due to hardware. That's understandable in the gaming community. We are NOT console gamers. Don't nerf the hardware! (Putting that in my signature!)

Re: Widescreen Support is Cheating. WHAT!?

we better let DICE know that we are unhappy, what is the email address we should email and some one write out all the points of stuff we want changed/want.. i know that we would be lucky to get a few thousand "pc enthusiast gamers" to email.. but DICE has to realize that i have 4+ friends that will buy the game if i tell them it's good and happy with it.. and if they get good press on the internet/ forums that it could easily sell another 50,000

oh and if they don't support higher FOV WHICH i need for eyefinity.. then maybe widescreenfixer(they support bf2) will add BFBC2 to the list and all can be happy (with FOV's..thats is.)

Until the beta for the PC is finished, I dont think DICE will listen to anything about the FOV.

Well during and after the PC beta, let's egg the hell out of them about the FOV and other points we want to push through! We mustn't fold, haha!

Well, at least wait until the Beta before pushing it too hard. They know about the FOV, and I'm sure they've seen some of the responses we've had to IW and Gearbox for their use of console FOVs on their PC ports. They may have it set to an appropriate angle, or have some adjustment that we can set on our own. Maybe a slider or a config setting.

no wonder DICE decided to boycott forums lol. they knew they would piss some people off with these recent decisions.

Thats actually the way to do it.

Of course if the FOV isn't a big deal afterall, then will it still matter?

I will take that sentence as proof that you havent been around the old BF2142 forums much :)

It was a very heated discussion, but it was also in Ye Olde Days where WS montors were a minority. Surely almost everyone must be using WS monitors today?

Mw2 has the same issue, and it really annoys me. Not because I become dizzy, or think the graphics look wrong. No, its the way people can litterally walk right past each other without being seen. It is just stupid. But I expect it to be less of an issue in BC2 regardless, because the BF series tends to be more about frontlines and less about zooming around all over the map.

I'll be furious if I have to have black lines running down the side of my monitor. Everyone has a widescreen monitor these days, it's ridiculous not to have widescreen support.

I would imagine the default aspect ratio is 16:9 since the game is made for consoles in 720res. I actually play most my games in 16:9res despite having 4:3 display, to get wider FOV so I don't how it would be unfair advantage since everyone can just run it in wide-screen resolution.

Before the rumors get out of hand. The game has widescreen support. That is not the issue in this thread.

What people are talking about is how much of the field of view is shown by compressing the picture. Think of a fish-eye style lense vs a normal 35mm lense. It is the extreme of this as it shows 180 degrees +. You see more of the sides but the view becomes distorted to show this. A 35 mm by contrast isn't distorted and looks more normal but you can't see to sides the same way. By not having a higher field of view it makes it harder to be aware of what is around you but of course distorts the picture less.

I understand, I just don't want to be limited to 4:3 for a good fov.
