I like the commander, because I'd rather not have artillery every two seconds called in by morons.

Re: Should the Commander be in BF3?

The idea of the commander is good, but the way it was pulled off in BF2 was terrible.

      UAV:
Remove it completely, or if not, nerf it something drastic. Reduce recharge times first of all, then start nitpicking at its effectiveness. For example, don't display targets under tree lines, inside buildings, in bunkers etc. Snipers should also be harder to spot with the UAV if they're hiding in a bush etc.

      Artillery:
Bring back the Desert Combat style manual artillery.

      Scan:
      Remove it.

      Supply Drop/Vehicle Drop:
      Keep them as is.

Fair enough, then if they're not pilotable they should have to actually take off from the airfield or at least start at the main base somewhere near the UAV trailer rather than just instantly appearing above an enemy base. Due to that, it should last until it's shot down, then have a much longer respawn time. The commander could open up his command window as he does now, then right-click a spot to deploy the UAV, whereupon it would take off from the airfield (or appear in the sky above the UAV trailer more likely so as not to interfere with friendly aircraft taking off) and fly at its current speed towards the designated spot, spotting things along the way. Once its at its point, it will circle like it does now, until someone either shoots it down or the commander gives it another destination. It would be effective, wouldn't completely monopolise the commander's time and attention, but wouldn't be an 'o hai i c u thar lol!' instant-spotting method.

As for manual spotting, that method would work so long as satscan wasn't available, or was greatly changed from what it is in BF2/BF2142. Otherwise, its simply an inconvenience to have to zoom all the way in to spot, since you know by the glowing red dots where the enemy is. Now, if the commander actually had to use full zoom to manually look for the enemies before spotting, I would be fine with commander spotting. The satscan just takes all the guesswork out of it, really.

Re: Should the Commander be in BF3?

Commander role doesnt sit very well with me.

artillery? If you want artillery bring back proper 1942 team based artillery with a sniper to spot for a mobile arty piece. Or maybe even create a mortar class. Basicall if i get caught in an arty strike i want to know it was through some semblence of skill and teamwork, not merely a commander clicking a bunch of red dots on a map.

Uav? Sat scan? If you want positions of the enemy known then maybe there should be some kind of piloted recce aircraft. Or get rid altogether, good cover and concealment shoudnt be compromised by big brother

In short commander for me feels like he is taking away a lot of what the teams should be doing for themselves. If he just commanded and supplied ammo/vehicles that would be fine though.

As long as they take out the dialogue "enemy infantry spotted" and "hostile infantry" I will be fine.

For me they should just add a volume slider in the options, people who want it can still have it and those that don't can mute it.

Re: Should the Commander be in BF3?

Yes there should be a Commander in BF3, but there should be the choice between playing a fighting Commander, or playing a static Commander.

If you select static, you are locked in position and can't go anywhere, but you get a fuller range of command options.

If you select fighting Commander, you get a cut-down command interface and lower default score, but you are allowed to run around getting kills. If the team have a fighting Commander, then perhaps squad leaders could have the option to call in supply drops and UAVs directly.

I was number one on the Commander leader board for BF2142 for about two years, so I reckon I know a thing or two about how the role affects the game.

OK, now shoot me down in flames... :)

I say yes because its part of the game. Im sure they can be more creative with it so its not a spamfest of pointing out things or having bad commanders. The commander could have some more useful roles, like in titan mode in 2142 he was able to move the titan around. (Not that it was always a good thing )

how about co-commanders? one to fight in combat with his men and one who is locked inside some command center room and only able to lead form the command interface.

what your suggesting is like a General that sits in a capcom or behind a plan desk and a Batalion like commander on the field?

nah, just don't give him the "enemy spotted" voice. if he's muted when he spots, i think everything is fine.

good players are looking at the minimap often so it won't matter if his spotting is muted.
