    Re: Arma 2

These screenshots of me gunning down an escaping tankcrew almost makes it up for those 956 times an unseen AI bastard has shot me from across the continent.

But still, the result of 2-3 hours of gaming is 5 kills, 19 deaths. Not that I havent had worse K/D rations in other games, but that usually didnt take more than 15 minutes.

Off the demo I can say I personally don't like it. Voice acting is the worst i've seen in a while, Too complicated, too much to remember. I even failed the tutorial. I want a game that I can just jump in and shoot. Like battlefield 2 or 2142. Just read the manual to learn the standard config, and boom. Your in. Not spending an hour just to figure out how to lift your weapon after hopping out of a helicopter on an LZ. I still haven't figured that out. I might just get the game after hearing reviews, but if they come out bad, well i'm not.

I love the voice acting, brings back memories from OFP

              Re: Arma 2

After some days I feel that I am starting to get a handle on the game, so here are a few tips for other newcomers.

Imagine this is a video of me speaking with heavy East European accent.

What you absolutely need to know to play ArmaII
based on the gamemode evolution, other gamemodes may be different.

              Movement
Pretty standard wasd movement, with zxc for prone-crouch-standing and qe for leaning.
Note that you can lock leaning by doubletapping the key. Walk by holding shift, lock by doubletapping.
Num enter toggles third person view

              Navigation
m for map, k brings up a compass and right-ctrl m an small GPS
Walk toward friendlies or red dots.

              Interaction
Activate the scroll wheel to bring up a context sensitive menu, allowing you to enter vehicles, change weapons, do medic stuff, open gates etc

              Weapon
F cycles between your weapons firing mode and grenades. Its that way you choose semi-auto-burst
Aiming is special. singletap on RMB brings up the scope/ironsight, but holding RMB zooms in (they call it hold breath, but its zoom) That makes it difficult do bring up the sight when zoomed, so if you have a gaming mouse, I recommend binding sight to another button.
At you spawn there will often be green ammo boxes, go to them and use the scroll wheel (called action menu) to pick among the available weapons. the g key (gear) also works.
              Remember to bring ammo.
If your weapon isn't showing, pres fire, that should bring it up

              Getting to the action

In evolution what vehicles you can use is limited by you rank. And rank 0 you can only use un-armed vehicles like HMMMVs without guns or motorbikes.
However there is a faster way to get to the action:
At your base camp there should be one or more flag poles. go to them and use the scroll wheel to select either "move to respawn" or "HALO"
Halo will drop you in free fall over the map, use movement keys to approach the target and activate your parachute (from the action menu) when you reach 300 meter attitude.

              IFF
It can be hard to see if your target is an enemy.
If you hover over a target and press "space" you will see their name, green is friendly.
However, enemy vehicles captured by friendlies are red still red, so be careful.
The AI has quick reflexes, so you need to be able to recognize their uniforms to survive.

              Chat
VOIP is CAPS lock,, double press to lock
Text chat is /, and you can change channels with Arrow up/down

                  Re: Arma 2

I downloaded the demo a few days ago from steam, after alot of control changing I managed to get the movement etc. right. From what I played, driving around in a hummer, shooting with rocketlaunchers, AK47s, and getting shot in the leg it felt like Battlefield 2 Project Reality with better graphics, hitboxes and more features.

However the sound was horrible. I don't know if it was some bug or problems with my soundcard but when the main character spoke it sounded like one of them automatic phone answer things. "MoVE - To - THaT - HOuSe", it felt like they chopped up 20 different dialogs and put them together without listening to it. The voice acting was horrible aswell! But overall I thought it was great!!

Now the question is, is this worth buying? How is the online gameplay? After been reading some posts in this thread I see that everyone has different views on how organized it is. But is it anything like a good Project Reality round?

Should I buy this and play, or should I work on the tan over summer and buy Flashpoint2 later this year?

                    Re: Arma 2

Buy ArmA 2 if you want the better game. Dragon Rising will not have as much freedom as this, and it erases several scenarios that are possible in ArmA 2.

ArmA 2 is arguably far better and more capable than PR, as it was designed with realism from the start, unlike using BF2 as a platform.

The voices are choppy, yes, but it would be extremely difficult to record all of those different voices and put them together while maintaining high quality. Yes, it needs improving in some areas, but when you realise what a daunting task it is, you will understand the concessions made. Most words are recorded independently.

If you buy Dragon Rising, you get exploding red barrels, no airplanes, no civilians...the list goes on.

Why are there no airplanes? Because the island has anti-aircraft defenses.

So why does ArmA 2 have airplanes? After all, Chernarus could easily have AA defenses.
It has airplanes, because it all depends on the MISSION, not what the developers force upon you. The mission maker may or may not choose to implement AA defenses. Or the mission may require you to fly an airplane and take out the AA defenses.

The island in Dragon Rising also lacks civilians. The developers explained that due to the war, they left the island. Which is fine, but it removes another possible facet that civilians may have added to the missions in Dragon Rising.

Sounds awesome! I love that it is so realistic! But could it be so realistic that it removes gameplay awesomeness? In my opinion PR is a mix of realism and movie action. I mean I don't want to fight a war, I want to play a kickass game.

Also are the players online as serious as most of the PR players?

You cannot compare PR to ArmA2 in any way.

The thing that draws me more to Dragon Rising is that it looks more fun, more combat, more tense firefights that being picked off from miles away and never knowing where/why. Having civilians doest really appeal to me in any way, its just another thing to get punished for shooting when I would rather be having a decent battle with the enemy.
I assume the game will be modable in some form so I would hope someone would put new units in. I think I speak for quite a few people on this forum when I saw I dont really care about a game having muzzle flash or some other really meaningless 'realisms' but we just want something that we can get stuck into without hours of learning the game and enjoy the game more than anything.

There are concessions made for realism. Healing soldiers, reviving, repairing vehicles through use of repair trucks etc.

Could it be so realistic that it detracts from the gameplay? Well, I think the fun part is hiding behind a brick wall being suppressed by a PKM, not daring to move out for fear of getting hit. It certainly requires a lot of patience.

If you don't want to fight a real war, I certainly suggest you stick with BF2 or CoD. This is a thinking game, again, one that requires a lot of patience.

It can be said that there is no GAMEPLAY in ArmA 2. You simply play it as if it were a real war.

Teamwork online is quite lacking. I suggest you look around for a group of friends who will play the game with you in a realistic fashion.

Tim270, I'm trying to tell the people who are looking for a MILITARY SIMULATOR, to buy ArmA 2. Dragon Rising certainly looks very mainstream, to appeal to BF2 and CoD players. It is far less capable, but if you are looking for a unified experience and less variety in missions - by all means, buy Dragon Rising.

I don't want to fight a REAL war, ArmA2 isn't a REAL war. PR is a thinking game aswell and that is what I'm after. However ArmA2 just isn't that good of a game, it's got slow movements. For example if you're sprinting and want to drop prone or crouch you need to stop slowly sit down or lay down. If it was a real war you would freaking throw yourself to the ground in a split second.

It feels like ArmA2 is a great game on paper but not in reality if you know what I mean.

I think I'll wait for Dragon Rising.

How about a quick describtion of the game modes?
I am starting to understand evolution, but in most other gametypes people just seem to be scattered randomly all over the map.

Ehm, quick test in the armory just for you:
Full sprint to prone = less than a second
Crouched sprint to prone = less than 1.5 seconds

Try watching it in third person, I think it looks pretty realistic.
