This kind of question has been asked before so do some searching and look for some demos learn some moves.

In general there are not certain moves for unexperienced pilots to loose a more experienced pilot.

You first need to develope 3D-awareness and that means investing time, fly the maps, look for the bounderies and especially the ceiling. This can be best practiced in single player maps. After that you need to learn to use external views to be able to look around you, most important is rearview and later on you could add some. Some use fly by, frontview and/or mouse look. This only works when your 3D-awareness has already developed.

Best advice and general tactic is: spot the enemy before he spots you and surprise him if you can. To spot jets most pilots will look for altitude and patrol.

When you have an enemy on your tail you will learn to loose the enemy more based on experience then based on some moves from the book because usually the enemy has read the book to

Thanks for that - You are right about the 3D awareness bit - I find myself getting "lost" in the sky often and ending up somewhere I don't want to be. What sh!ts me about single player is that the bots are goddamn aviator hogs as well!

I wish there was a command in single player to force the bots to land and hand over the plane/chopper to you!

As far as heli piloting goes, it's all about situational awareness.

Learn where all the AA emplacements are and blindspot them well before you're in their range (350m).

Use mouselook (hold down control and swivel mouse) to check all around you while you fly.

Blindspot far off areas where you think enemies might be.

Pay attention to which team owns which flags and what that means in terms of troop movement.

I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things, but as long as you really focus on paying attention to what's happening around you, you should be fine. Search youtube for videos of expert pilots and watch what they do to stay alive.

Simple Truth:

There is nothing anyone will say here that will make you a better pilot/gunner. When you start BF2, its usually the thing you find yourself doing during the first month and that will most likely be what your going to be (chopper/jet/inf whore) for the rest of your BF2 career. Guess your just a infantry player.

His sarcasm aside, there's truth to that. If you don't have a natural ability at it and still can't quite get the feel of flying after a few hours of practice, odds are you're a better fit for ... errrm, ground duties? Is that what they call it? I don't know, I'm always eating sandwiches in my cockpit.

Mmm, that sounds kinda sexy doesn't it...

Start a Local game. You get the better choice of maps and there are no bots. It will help you get the feel of flying.

Yea... I thought flying the helicopter was absolutely impossible until I actually tried doing more than taking off. Within 10 hours of my first attempts at flying around an attack helicopter I was a competent pub pilot. Not good, but competent.

You have to just be aware. Aware, aware, aware. Situational awareness is the most important thing as a helicopter pilot.

Stay away from jets as much as possible (until you can kill them yourself) always kill opposing choppers and AA first, then work your way down the threat priority level list from fast moving cars, to tanks, to APCs, to AT kit infy, all the way down to the douchebag sniper 250m away from you trying to take shots at your cockpit with an M95... till you do a couple ghost spots around some tall buildings, find him on the minimap, shoot at that spot and wait for his character to show up and put a TV right in the middle of his forehead while he's looking at you :) And watch him cry "HAAAAAAAAAAAAACKKEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE EEEEEEEEEER"

Also, if you're playing in single player, the bots are dumb zealots. They do whatever you tell them to do. If somebody gets in a chopper and you're 50m away running towards it and say "I NEED A RIDE!" he'll wait for you to get in. Then when you get in say "GET OUT" and he'll jump out immediately and go do something else. :)

cyn, how often do you find yourself looking at the map? I find myself constantly checking the map for stuff spotted, vehicles spawned, aa's occupied, etc. hm, maybe I use it too much.

There's no such thing as watching the map too much. During a 2v2 I'll pretty much have the map open on the whole screen with it transparent.

In a pub, I probably look at the minimap every 2 seconds. Also, every time something is spotted, I look at the map. I usually play as medic so when somebody dies, you can see the shock paddle icon on the minimap and then look up on the death list in the top left of the screen to see what killed that person. Say somebody pops up dead at reactor towers, I look up and see the most recent death is an APC kill. Do a couple quick ghost spots over the reactor towers flag to see if you spot an APC, and if so, just shoot. You don't need to see it to kill it. That's the difference between being pro and being good.

Tips? Get a feel for it if you can't fly that means you just don't understand how it works its really simple. Your talented or your not.

How can you put in 1000hours and not get it...

^^ In your settings main control settings called Game Options in the menu screen. Also you need to bind a key to the command called "MAP" Thats what the map when u open and it has the changed settings you made to your transparently. The map when u open with Crlt does not apply ur changes. For flying a chopper you have to learn the ways of it. Exp: Fell how it turns left to right and up to down. I fly with a joystick so its different but for mouse you need to change ur mouse settings to fit you for piloting. For gunning, you need to understand how the TV works first. Turn left and right and you need to click for it to move. You keep clicking around to see how it turns etc. The hard part is to hit stuff. Thats when the word "Hit Box" comes into affect. Thats your part when YOU learn it ur self. no 1 can tell you because every comp. is different and ur connection to the server etc. And dont forgot ur ping changes everything. It took me a month to learn the chopper and do tricks with it. The best way to learn is to just fly and fly and fly and you will learn. my 2 cents
