Why do Pirates pirate? (read the whole article here)

This article has been rather a great read for myself, i personally loved this paragraph: "The problem is, devs need to be really honest about the topic. Blaming piracy for a move to the consoles is fine if it's really true, but if it's just an excuse to cover up a really badly made game, or one that nobody had machines that ran, that's just silly. It's easy to discount everything [pirates] say as justifications for theft, but if someone tells you your game's over-priced, buggy and the DRM is a nightmare, then it's madness not to listen to them."

Honestly why do pirates pirate? Badly made games not worth our money? our systems cant run so you have to buy a $1000 USD gaming rig for a $50 game?

Feel free to discuss more on this topic, as i have found it rather interesting :)

qft. That means they don't have to pay or go out and buy it.

Also, it can make you a lot of money (if it's mass piracy)

I think it's a combination of this ^ and that a lot of games are of mediocre quality that people don't want to pay +$50 for, especially if there's little/no chance for refund/trade-in.

I'd also say that too many gamers want to be able to play everything on a whim, instead of having to choose what they can and can't afford.

IMO, it's similar to movies/music - if something slam-dunk good, many people are likely to buy it...but getting a pirated version is so easy to do, that if it's a song or movie that you're kinda "meh" about, then the temptation to "steal" it is high.

if you're asking why folks produce pirated software, it's their way of sticking it to "the man", it's a challenge for the inexperienced, and it's on teh computorz (and it's a way for shady cats--bot herders esp--to make some money).

the only other ingredients you need is a male aged 13-31, some mountain dew, and warez pops up golden brown in no time.

if you're asking why folks download pirated software, it's because they're lazy, have no real income, or are eager to test their antivirus against the newest trojan on the market.

hope that clears it up...now i need to read the article to find out if i missed anything :salute:

Normally I would disagree with you, but now I think about I've done just that myself, with both Music, DVDs and Games recently.

But I suspect for most people it's a mixture as previously mentioned of it being too easy and not wanting to pay.

What i hate are people who say "oh, i only download the game to test it. If i like it, i buy the game". I mean, that's so much crap right there. They download it and play the entire thing. Crysis for example. Simple fact of the matter is they don't want to pay for a game. I don't blame these people (although they are wrong) as human nature is to try and spend as little as possible.

Publishers need to add extra security as humans will always pirate.

In terms of "try before you buy", what I think might be an idea would be to allow users to download a full-version for free, but have it shut down and become inoperative after 30-60 min of play. This would allow users enough time to see if they really liked it, and if so, they could then purchase it. It would also save time for developers to have to program a small demo that's separate from the full game.

Of course, this would terrify those devs and publishers who make mediocre products, as it would expose their game and prevent people from wasting their money in the first place.

I do not condone piracy (although I'll admit to having grabbed some music and movies myself), but for those people who do it because they've wasted money on crappy games in the past, I can at least understand their point. If there was a way to protect them, as well as the publisher/developer, then I think in the long run we'd get more quality products, less piracy, and everyone would win.

I never pirated games, although i have bought some fake copies when i was way younger than now at around 14yrs old, as soon as i moved into highschool i started buying genuine copies, even ltd editions, as i had benefits of online gameplay, ranks, not crashing asit was a genuine copy.

I do admit i did and still am torrenting movies as it not worth going to the theatres here in bahrain as they cut oof a lot of the good stuff but when at newcastle i go to the cinemas usually as its uncut!

In the music business i have not bought more than a few cassettes the rest are all downloaded via Limewire.

I do however not approve on piracy for games, especially the ones that are worth it, Orange Box for example.

I don't pirate games, but i do download songs as most times i only want one song, times when i want the whole album, like the new slipknot one, i will go out and buy it. i tend to wait till films are released on dvd, the cinema is very expensive for what it is
