As a soldier with over 8 years of active duty, including some time in the 82nd Airborne Division, I'll say that a lot of soldiers hold their weapons like that guy in the picture. Well, most avoid having it out of the shoulder pocket, but a lot use the magwell as something to hold. Since we've gone to the IBA with plates, it's really hard for anyone under 6' tall to reach the foregrip and keep a good sight picture. At 6'1" I can do it, but it's pretty uncomfortable so I tend to get lazy from time to time and hold it by the magwell myself.
Though in the picture it looks like the guy is just looking through the sight at something, not preparing to engage a target.

edit: and also aint even got the stock in his arm pit, and god hes just doing everything wrong... if you use a r/l image use a proper images...

He is not using the rifle as a weapon, but as an observation device and he is holding it correctly for that task.

The magazine well grip is pre-foregrip... don't forget those things are relatively new. His stance and how he is holding the rifle let's anyone looking at him know that he is not aiming at a target.

This is a very common sight to see. :salute:

Soldiers get very used to holding their M16/M4 by the mag well for comfort. But you wouldn't see them engage targets like that. Honestly, I also wouldn't be standing either if that were the case. We do a lot of standing and shooting from the hip in games, but that's not the way real soldiers do it at all.

The very first thing you learn in indoctrination is how to "GET DOWN YOU MAGGOTS!'

On the topic of short guys and foregrips- cant you just bring the grip closer to the magwell?

Getting back to more important things other than a picture of a soldier.

If BF3 is being worked on, so is Mirror's Edge and BF:BC. Meaning that Dice has somehow managed to get a lot more employees probably from EA (oh noes).

Or EA's in-house dev team is taking on BF3 or one of the other projects.

Wasnt Bf:V just an expansion of Bf1942 or something?
