Re: Wow.... anyone else run into this guy?

Never had to deal with such a disagreeable individual of this level myself. Never played with him nor intend to, but following that link to their forums and reading the manner of his post, it seems like this bigdog has quite an inferiority complex going on. Quite presumptuous and probably quite a temper too. Hardly a commander that would inspire much trust and respect for me.

But I find it quite ironic and mildly amusing how he tries to promote teamwork and cohesion, but when hes commander, he seems to merely treats his squads as an extention of himself. If the team wins, he wins. The team loses, he loses and probably feels embarassed for it and then gets angry at whoever failed him.

While I'll safely say that hes probably a skilled commander, I still get the feeling that his communication skills aren't as good as he thinks they are. Seems like everyone is expected to be on the same page as him, he doesn't seem to care to be on the same page as his squadmates. And thats probably why there is friction between zarious and this bigdog.

Oh well, forget about it. As long as you have fun playing a round, winning isn't really all that important.

Very true. As long as the commander is spotting, putting up UAV's and using his orbital/emp on the armor if it is up, I think he is doing what he needs to. As far as issuing orders goes, that's a mixed bag. If the commander is giving me an order on something near me, I'll accept it. If he gives me an order on something I already have a squad order on. I'll accept it and tell my squad in VOIP the duplicate comes from the commander, (no reason not to let him have some points too.) If he tells me to attack something on the other side of the map, I'll usually tell him where I'm headed and that I'll accept that order if he wants to give it, (guess that would get me kicked from some servers. )

Hmmm.. i don't know. I still think commanders should give orders because just spotting enemies isn't going to achieve much unless someone is given the order to goes out their way to neutralise a threat. And giving aid to your friendlies is not going to achieve much if they are putting their efforts into the wrong place.

Commander is afforded a viewpoint to detects enemies that other players cannot. Note that I said that he detects the enemies, he does not see them with his own eyes, so this viewpoint he has has its limitations.

But besides that, you can't really say that a commander should not give orders, because if he doesn't give orders on where to attack or defend, then who shall? If there is a decision to be made, its best made by someone who has an overall view of the map, not the squadleaders or the individual soldiers because their viewpoint is limited only to their eyesight.

I'm not saying that commanders shouldn't give orders, just that sometimes they really aren't the best. I guess it depends on the commander and the team. When you have 2-3 squads that are playing well and a commander that is decent, following his orders to defend while two other squads take another point is fine. The problem comes from when you have a bunch of players running around doing whatever and your squad is the only cohesive unit on the field. Or, a commander that doesn't really have a clue how to use his squads. At that point, sometimes you just have to rely on your squad to do it all.

Re: Wow.... anyone else run into this guy?

I was there for this event. I was in Zarious's squad (Zar's team went 21-and 1 in 12-man Titan at TWL, so he knows a bit about teamwork, BTW) and he relayed this "BigDog"s voice comms to me. His orders were, in reality, fairly ignorant - not out-and-out stupid, but pretty unhelpful - and in the rare moments where Bigdog wasn't shouting at everyone over voice comms (everyone that hadn't already muted him, that is), he was typing frantically in all caps about what worthless losers his team was. I didn't catch him doing much actual commanding - you know, spotting targets, dropping UAVs, and so on. Just bursting his spleen in chat. It was worse than being a man down, since not only was Bigdog useless, he was a complete distraction. He seemed to be banning teammates at random for "not being teamplayers". I bet we would've won that game by a decent margin if he hadn't been there disrupting his entire team.
You can get a pretty good idea of what that guy and his team are like just by a brief perusal of their forums. The guy acts like his wife recently ran off with another woman, and he's taking it out on everyone around him in the most petty way possible.

Eh, just never go back. There's plenty of other servers out there.

Errr... You seem to be under the false impression that a commander gets points by issuing orders.

                MYTH:
Commander Bonus Points are the result of a commander issuing an order, a SL accepting it and Squad Members following it.

                FACT:
Commander Bonus Points are the result of a SQUAD LEADER issuing an order, and Squad Members following it.

Regardless of WHO issues the order, every time a SL sees "You got a Squad Leader Success Point!" the commander sees "Commander Bonus Score".

i suppose in a perfect world, only commanders would be able to set your squad's destination. unlucky we live in this post-lapsarian state
