If you die from 1 bullet, you will not do things you would do if you died with 4. Think "Matrix". Dodging bullets becomes a whole new, and respectable skillset. When the game is slowed down, so is the thinking. When youre playing a fast game, the mind races a whole lot faster. Thats how it is in RL and in videogames. SC promotes fast thinking, fast choices and maneuvering. HC promotes "lazy" gameplay with limited maneuvering.
    Again... That's your opinion, mine?

SC - Run 'n' Gun, careless.
HC - More tactical, you need a brain to stay alive ,quick reflexes and patience.

First of all, Im not the only one (I believe Leadcannon has also told you the same thing) who will advise you not to play on a newbie-server. Go have a quick frag in Baghdad Cafe and you wont be crossing streets without getting shot. Not to mention the mere fact that youre proving my point once again-

    HC- stay put
    SC- stay mobile
    Ain't it more like...

    HC - Stay aware
    SC - Be careless

Last time I checked, COD was an arcadeish videogame. If you want to play a sim, I strongly suggest Rainbow Six: Raven Shield, it still has a formidable community, lots of cool gadgets and intelligent players. Not to mention the hardcore realism factor in a tight and close quarters frame. Yuuu-uumm!
ROFL! Rainbow Six a sim? Seriously? That's one of the worse games I've played... But no, that's a arcade game not a sim.

Moving on: I argued your own sense of logic, youre arguing videogames logic. Wrong.

Then your "IMO" is wrong. Attempting to sink 3 shots into a target will always require more skill than sinking 1 shot. Your logic chip must be broken, because youre arguing gravity, youre arguing elementary maths.

    Yes.

    1. You sucked as5 and got raped for it
    2. Its a videogame, keep the "real world" aspect out of it
    3. It makes perfect sense
Someone seriously has a screw missing huh? I said shooting someone in the "HEAD" with 3 bullets makes no logical sense whatsoever. I like how you try to twist everything.

Its nothing to do with the real world. I really have no idea what world your living in, or what your taking, but most FPS games base their weapons off RL, Whether you like it or not.

      Take it this way-

In HC, you stay slow in defensive mode to stay alive, and stay slow in offensive mode for the same reason.
In SC, you once again stay slow in defensive mode to stay alive, but you have much more freedom to stay nimble, fast in offensive mode.

So basically, the skill to stay alive in HC isnt really much different than the skill of staying alive in SC. People tend to think that bunnyhopping is "the skill of survival" in SC. Its just one of the skills. The main goal is the same, to be unseen and have the element of surprise. But since SC is that much more dynamic and faster, the offensive side of the game has to be that much more honed.
I'm gonna have to disagree with you on this one Chris.

I find that in Hardcore mode players move around much more tactfully and will not stick their heads up when the enemy is laying down a base of fire. The ability to be killed by one or two (and yes - sometimes it takes up to three) shots seems to lend; at least to the hardcore realism players (no pun intended), to a richer and more rewarding environment.

In softcore mode, it seems like many other video games I've played in that you'll see 3 guys in a hallway at a time. In hardcore, I'm hard pressed (again, no pun intended) to find more than 2 people advancing at a time. Usually in hardcore mode people learn that if a team-mate is moving, he is a target for the enemy and thus you can score an easy kill if you watch for guys shooting at your buddy. This lends itself to a more "cover me" friendly atmosphere that I don't see as much in Softcore (not saying it doesn't happen).

The interesting aspect, I think about hardcore mode (being somewhat of a gun hobbyist IRL) is the atmospheric realism. It's not about the realism of the guns, it's about what the changes in the damage system leads to in the end.

In the end you're left with people using cover and concealment much more usefully than in softcore mode. One doesn't run too long in HC, they tend to run from cover to cover. Again, while all this atmosphere is possible in SC mode, I just don't see it too often (I pub BTW). While spectating a map it's interestin to note that in HC mode the map looks deserted until someone pops their head around a corner for a sec before running behind more cover. And while some maintain that this leads to a less fun environment; I disagree and state that the ability to be killed realistically by a single bullet means that you will move as if you were in a realistic battlefield.

      Now as far as skill?

Well here's my opinion on that. Does it take skill to spray a building with deep impact and get a kill? No. But then again, it doesn't do it in one shot. Going through a wall decreases your bullets effectiveness where you'll need more than one bullet to do the job.

So you can "spray and pray" through a wall and hope you hit something. The thing is, this is actually a tactic employed by various military institutions. You know theres a guy in the building, so hose it down and hope you got em before rushing in. Is that skillfull? Not in the idea that you didn't have to move your mouse over someone, but it makes it skillfull in using a tactic to your advantage in order to serve a purpose.

Turn it around and you really need skill. I can't tell you how many times I've been in a building in HC mode and bullets start flying through almost every wall. I can usually avoid getting killed by hitting the deck and hoping for the best. In SC mode, I find that I can live long enough to vacate the room which doesn't make the game very much fun for me. The immersion inloved in hearing the bullets whiz by my head and then huggin the rugs and covering the door just makes me enjoy it more. Hitting the deck at a moments notice seems more skillful to me than just running out of the room while takin a few hits to the gut.

Now about more skill needed to get 3 bullets as opposed to one bullet? While logic and theory would normally dictate this to be true, I find the reality is a little watered down. Because CoD4 uses small maps, it's relatively easy to get 3 rounds into a person pretty quickly as you normally face them up close. And all you have to do is sight in and hold the mouse button down and you got yourself a kill. Snipers are an exception, but you can usually kill a guy with one shot in either mode with those weapons. In hardcore mode I find that whoever gets the kill would've probably gotten the kill in SC mode anyways.

The skill you're talking about comes into account when the person is moving perpendicular to you and you have a semi auto rifle. While it is indeed true that you need more skill to hit them three times, you can't discount the fact that you still need skill to hit them once. Most of the time with the nature of the CoD4 maps, I find it physically impossible to have someone running from cover to cover and be able to hit them more than 2 times before they are behind cover.

Lets not forget about the skill it takes to recover from bein hit in SC mode. IMO finding a corner to nap in while all the red disappears from your screen really doesn't take much skill. So you shoot a guy a couple of times and he disappears only to reappear around a different corner with full health. That is one of my major gripes with SC.

In an interview with the BF1942 guys way back in the day, they said they built the game so that being seen first didn't mean you lost the battle (even though sometimes it did). This is also true with SC mode CoD4. You can be totally oblivious to a person aimin down their scope at you when they begin firing, but you still have a VERY good chance to counter (with enough skill) and neutralize the threat.

While I enjoy that for most large scale FPS's - I think that it takes more skill to be the first guy to see the other guy than it does to be the second guy who counters. But hey, maybe the first guy just really sucks.

More to your point though, I think that your logic is a bit flawed because you say that defensively its the same for both modes while the offense is what differs. I say that you can still be killed in offense so that doesn't really prove your point. While you can be faster and more nimble in offense in SC mode, you MUST be more tactful in HC mode while on offense which leads to a better immersion rating in my book.

I typed a lot because I'm procrastinating pulling the dam weeds in the backyard.

Actually, thats not an opinion. Its more of an observation.

SC - Run 'n' Gun, careless.
HC - More tactical, you need a brain to stay alive ,quick reflexes and patience.
So yourse saying that HC players use more brains than SC players do? That might explain why I was allowed to run through an entire 17 man team so bad that I felt sorry for the poor kids. If you play SC carelessly, you will die. So no, "careless" does not describe SC. "Fast", "speedy", "on crack", that describes SC more. And neither of those have anything to do with little tactical value.

I LOL hard at your claim that HC needs "quick reflexes" while you conventiently leave it out of SC. Theres a number of COD4 competitive players who speak against you. On the matter. The whole "reflex" and "aiming skills" has been gone through and its in SC-s side.

If you "Run´n´gun" in SC, youre dead meat. In essence, prepare youself, its going to be hard to swallow, SC is HC on crack. Everything is being fastforwarded. If you approach a corner in HC for a timeframe of 5 seconds, in SC, you need to do it in 2, and you need to be able to not just approach it, but to rush it, possibly with a combination of trickjump to mess up your opponents aim as much as possible. In laymans terms, you hold 2 keys to approach the corner in HC, you fiddle around with at least 5 in SC.

Again, dont use the term "tactical" if you dont know the meaning behind it. SC is just as tactical as HC is, but a hell of a lot faster and technical.

        HC - Stay aware
        SC - Be careless
        More like

        HC- stay asleep
        SC- more crack!!!

Because "slow" and "lazy" is what describes a HC player. The best SC players Ive met are lightning fast with ultra reflexes and all the while they have exceptional situational awareness. The ones that finish the round sub 1:1 KDR are careless, stupid and inexperienced, with a situational awareness of a lemon in a fridge.

No, SC does not promote carelessness, unless you like your biggest achievement to be 1:1 KDR.

ROFL! Rainbow Six a sim? Seriously? That's one of the worse games I've played... But no, that's a arcade game not a sim.
Did you say "R6" in singular? Let me guess, R6:Vegas was your first R6 game, because if youre mocking R6 title as a "sim", then you obviously have no clue. Its an old game, but its like an ArmA to CQB. And Im not talking about Ubisucks greatest hits called "Letdown" or "Suckdown" and "Gaygas".

Someone seriously has a screw missing huh? I said shooting someone in the "HEAD" with 3 bullets makes no logical sense whatsoever. I like how you try to twist everything.
Actually Im not twisting anything. You are having a hard time staying with the reality of the situation, which is the simple fact that COD4 is an arcade game, not a sim. 3 headsots required is a purposefully coded in feature.

AR shots from higher range than 2000 in game lenght units = 20HPx1.5=30HP
This means you actually need 4 headshots from long range to kill someone, provided there are no assisting perks. This is not "illogical" as it has nothing to do with "real life".

Its nothing to do with the real world. I really have no idea what world your living in, or what your taking, but most FPS games base their weapons off RL, Whether you like it or not.
        Dont contradict yourself.

As for me liking it or not. Most FPS games base their weapons appearances off RL, not their perfomance. This is a simple concept you are constantly failing to grasp.

Oh, so in order to shoot someone in the head with "one" bullet, I have to waste a perk??
No. Theres no "Aim Better!" perk in COD4. You need to work hard on your kills.

No they just wish to play a more enjoyable game mode that keeps you on your toes.
Youre talking down to a competitive player who is able to take and school you all day long.

Amusingly, we play a game that is constantly keeping us on our toes, while youre playing a game which is keeping you on your back, relaxed, lazy. Dont believe me? See how fast your fingers run over the KB in HC and then compare it to SC.

We can both first think about the question I posed a while ago.

          Quake/UT or SWAT4/R6RSV?

I find that in Hardcore mode players move around much more tactfully and will not stick their heads up when the enemy is laying down a base of fire.
In SC, players run around, quickly changing cover to cover, to hit the pressure on the opposition (very obvious in CAL, CEVO, TWL matches). Its a whole different set of maneuvering. People in SC do NOT move less tactfully, they move tactfully as dictated by the games setting. Speed is the key. But heres a question. Dodging bullets by wielding the mouse and playing around with 7 keys, skill or not? Can you do it?

The ability to be killed by one or two (and yes - sometimes it takes up to three) shots seems to lend; at least to the hardcore realism players (no pun intended), to a richer and more rewarding environment.
Richer? Hardly. Perhaps to some, a more immersful environment, yes, but not risher. Crack or warm milk? Which will tear your brains out in a festival of emotions? SC does that. Hit a 20 player SC server and the mayhem ensues. Situational awareness has to be tenfolded, not because youre moving faster, but because the OpFor is shifting their location so fast, that what happened 5 seconds ago is ancient history. Its a whole different concept of 1 vs 1.

In softcore mode, it seems like many other video games I've played in that you'll see 3 guys in a hallway at a time. In hardcore, I'm hard pressed (again, no pun intended) to find more than 2 people advancing at a time. Now this I cannot argue with, as its your own perception, your own opinion and experience from the game. I personally airsoft a lot, CQB being my favourite part, and when people say that CQB is wars hell, they are right. When sh!t hits the fan, you wish you were under that concrete youre walking on. But in the same time, its all about speed and agression. CQB is more and more seen as an asymetric battlefield. And people camping up in HC is far from that. SC, with its lightning fast shifting, "on crack" play, resembles "RL" far more, even though it should not. Not tactics wise, but atmosphere wise.

Hitting the deck at a moments notice seems more skillful to me than just running out of the room while takin a few hits to the gut.
You just proved my point. The mere fact that its THAT much harder to get (earn) the kill in SC means that it requires much more skill to be on the offensive. Simply shooting the walls is not enough as you have to beat your opponent on the technical level (keyboard and mouse and eye coordination) aswell as psychological level (pushing the opponent into run, making him cornering himself in). All the while youre mobile, switching positions, and always voulnerable to flanking. Situational awareness has to be on par with Peter Parkers spidersenses.

Snipers are an exception, but you can usually kill a guy with one shot in either mode with those weapons. In hardcore mode I find that whoever gets the kill would've probably gotten the kill in SC mode anyways.
Except that in practice, in SC; you dont kill someone with 3 bullets. It takes significantly more. Even in a nose to nose situation, if the opposition is fast and nimble, it takes 1/3rd of a mag of the MP5 to get someone down. Whereas one would be dead on the first hit in HC. You are required to have a superb aim in SC. Its not getting the crosshairs on the enemy that counts, its keeping them there, and people literally train that skill as youre constantly lagging 0.2 seconds behind the target.

The chances of getting 1 hit is significantly higher than the chances of getting 3 consequetive hits. Skill takes chances out of the picture and exchanges it with factuality. In order to get there, you need to spend quite some time honing hand-eye coordination.

Furthermore proving my point about the immense necessity for a high offensive skillset. Not to mention the fact that it takes just as much time to recover fully in HC; as it takes in SC. 7 seconds.

          I

Except that in order to be the guy who sees others first, more often than not, you can just sit still and let others do the moving, and THAT doesnt take much skill at all. Both in videogames (called camping), aswell as in RL.

Do go down the road of ArmA or OFP, that game is an exception of its own. You cannot compare anything to it. Rainbow Six, the old ones yes, are not a sim. You can't even put them in the same league as ArmA, fact!

Maybe you might of thought it was a sim, but its not. The only Army sim I have heard of is and was actually any good is OFP and now ArmA.

"Tactics"- a study to win a battle, or in simplier terms, methods that win an engagement. If someone is using an age old proven method to kill someone, those methods are "tactics". This is all semantics, but I wouldnt want people to use fancy words to support their case while they dont know what they are talking about.

So, does COD4 HC, in theory, use more "RL tactics" than SC does? Yes it does. Do you see people utilize proper engagement procedures in room clearing, or even perimetre defense, in COD4 HC? No you dont.

Theres JUST as much headless chicken running in HC, as there is in SC. What SC does better, is that it forces you to be quick about everything you do. Theres no time to fvck around in the corner. Your mission is to kill the enemy, which means that youre on the offensive most of the time. Thats in TDM. In S&D, SC plays out EXACTLY, to the NOTE, how HC does. Its all about "setnades", all about proper camping spots, all about enemy movement anticipation.

Erm, amusingly, I see people use cover in SC TDM all the time, even when Im playing in a 30+ player server. People prefer to switch positions and be more agressive in SC because they can get away with it. People prefer to stick to their positions and be passive in HC because they cant do anything otherwise.

              1. A SC player is REQUIRED to have a better aim.
              2. A SC player is REQUIRED to be faster in motion, in situational awareness and tactical thinking. (If there was an "APM" counter for COD4, youd see that the APM for a SC player is significantly higher than the APM for a HC player).
              3. A SC player is free to constantly maneuver and outmaneuver his opponents, the game "opens up" a lot more. A battle between two moving targets is a lot more technical and demanding than a battle between two dug up targets.

If you compare a Quake player to, say ArmA player, a Quake player has a much, much, much better hand-eye coordination, thats because one shot to kill is not enough, they have to shoot their targets, and keep the crosshairs on the target for a prolongued time. Something a slower player just simply cannot do. This is transferred to SC/HC very well, where HC is a lot slower game.

Thats just one of the requirements, and its a HUGE requirement on its own. People train dozens, if not hundreds of hours to perfect this skill.

HC doesnt require a "more" precise shot. It actually requires a LESS precise shot. Think about it for a moment. You can literally spam at a target in HC and if one shot hits, youre done. In SC, you need to hit anywhere between 2-5 shots, usually at least 3-5, independant of the range, in order to kill the target, all while the target is mobile. So if in HC, you need to be accurate for a splitsecond, in SC, that requirement becomes painfully long.

I dont use my crosshairs to aim. Center of the screen is burned into your retinas. Take away the crosshairs and the skilled bunch will never notice.

If youre physically impairing yourself, youre not being "more technical". If that was the case, I would ask you to cut your legs off and insult track and field sportsmen for their lack of manhood. Amusingly, if you aim through the iron sights, the weapon is lazer accurate, requiring less skill to hit people, whereas using open sights, you trade accuracy for RCOF. So I dont actually get why did you bring this argument in? Especially when HC players aim through the "imaginary" crosshairs just as much. I doubt that you pull up the iron sights in a nose-to-nose fight, do you?

If you enjoy it, fine. If you want to be an elitist about your choice of games, thats open for discussion.

[EDIT]: UT/Quake vs SWAT4/R6RSV, which is harder to master and get past 2:1 KDR? The answer is very simple...
              Spot on!

I don't want to sit there and waste half a mag because this guy is bunnyhopping all over the place. Whether I spray them in the chest or head, they go down!
Consider this: You spot an enemy as he runs into a building. You attempt to track him through the building as you fire at him. In softcore, you actually have to have a pretty good idea of where the enemy would be to hit him multiple times (In other words, you have to train yourself to track targets based on how fast players run in the game). In hardcore, you just have to hit him once with a lucky shot. You may know how to track targets behind walls, but you don't have to track him as much.

Also, how does it take a half a mag to take someone down?
I am able to take people down in softcore with three bullets.

Whats with all the... "luck" "camping" ......

You get it in both SC and HC. If you have enough skill to shoot quicker than the enemy, how is that luck? I really have no idea what HC servers you lot have play on, but my server and other servers that I've played on, each game is fast paced. You have to be quick and agile, if not you wont stand a chance.

And youve proven it once again.

Do go down the road of ArmA or OFP, that game is an exception of its own. You cannot compare anything to it. Rainbow Six, the old ones yes, are not a sim. You can't even put them in the same league as ArmA, fact!
Exactly as much of a sim as ArmA is. While "Rainbow Six" is a fictional organization, the game uses as much of real world as possible, given the computer and engine limitations in that time. No different than ArmA. Amusingly so, I still think your first game was Vegas, or some odd pisspoor port on the consoles, otherwise you couldnt be any more clueless.

Maybe you might of thought it was a sim, but its not. The only Army sim I have heard of is and was actually any good is OFP and now ArmA.
Wait, now its "a good sim is a sim" and "a bad sim is not a sim"? Based on personal preference?

Maybe he can, maybe he can't. I take it this is where your going to tell me your a psychic now? I have never played with either of you, so don't make assumptions you can't backup.
Ive learned to trust people who know their trade down to the note. Videogames are no different. If someone plays the game vigorously in a highly competitive arena and puts forth his opinion based on his experience with said videogame, its worth more than someones opinion based on his lack of experience and assumptions and ideals from real life.

Luck through a wall, where you don't know where the enemy is but you saw him go into the building. I'm saying it is easier to do it in hardcore as you only need one or two bullets to tag him instead of 5 or 6. Therefore you have to track him even longer in SC than HC. That was the point chris was trying to make, I was just trying to elaborate on it with an example.

I know troy said that spamming walls is a tactical strategy, yet people ban it in some servers. For some reason I don't think this is the game to be making that argument. It would be more fitted towards a realism simulator or mod (OFP, AA, ARMA, PR).

Hardcore acts just as much as softcore does in terms of everything else and I'm pretty sure that is the problem with the whole debate. You did not see anyone complaining as much in project reality verses vanilla bf2. Thats because more was changed to make it feel tactical.
Create a tactical mod for COD4 that changes some more stuff and I will bet on people complaining a lot less than now.

Well maybe I should have said which one I was talking about, my bad!

I did like Rouge Spear and Ghost Recon, all the others I don't really want to talk about... But still, they are not a sim. If you understood how ArmA works, you would see sense, but I doubt that will ever happen...

Back in the day, I thought I was a great player on Pro Evolution Soccer and so did my mates. Soon as I tried it online, I got a reality check. Now after playing it online, I can beat most.

Amusing, because Ghost Recon is not a "Rainbow Six" title. Its actually a "Ghost Recon" title. So much for your expertise when it comes to sims, dont it? The most amusing thing is that youre calling R6 down from the "sim" spot, while preaching ArmA up, even though they both share limitations inhereted by them being videogames. And having personally played ArmA, I can actually give a fair perspective. Then again, when you said "Rainbow Six: Ghost Recon", I doubting in you being able to do the same.

Your personal preference being served as facts now? No wonder you think getting 1 shot to hit taking more skill than 3 is logical. The point of this thread is that opinions are like as5holes, everyones got one, and they are all influenced and limited by emotions. Then theres facts and arguments, observations, which are solid, foolproof. Youre arguing gravity. Im arguing as5holes.

Congratulations, but as I said, you should always backup your assumptions... I take it if someone played against a guy who you thought was a god at CoD4 and beat him! I dont assume, you assume. Youre telling completely illogical tales based on your own skewed view, blatantly and obviously going againts common sense and logic. Perhaps this is why youre vaguely trying to tell me that its wrong of me to trust the words of a CAL player, compared to a pub allstar.
