Yesterday 3 series of 2 missiles fail to hit. Checked the battlerecorder file and this one should have been a hit I think but its the server that has to acknowledge the hit but fails.

Shots from behind, at an almost level or parallel angle, edged rear hitbox mesh with a very small angle and surface of contact with the heatsource and hitbox mesh creating a situation where the missile doesnt connect right away and loses the heatsource out of its sights immediately. That all sauced up with lag or peculiarities of interweb connection and voila.

        Fixes

Increase missile FOV to ~55~60 degrees
        Decrease missile tick time
Equalise the rear part of all similar class jets, in size and shape
Equalise the location of all similar class jets

Otherwise, shoot at extreme angles, preferably from the sides.

Abovementioned 4 fixes take a maximum of 1 manhours of work.

At the moment I made the screenshot the missiles already locked on for a few hundred yards and did track the jet. But the hitbox is indeed very small.

Can this be explained more simple? What's "FOV"? atleast

                  WoW thank you very much

And I believe thats what EA should do to fix the missiles and planes right?

Made a mistake there. Fixd. But yeah, thats the fixes I think would do the work.

Thats some good info Chris, just decreasing the tick-time would already make up for a lot of misses I think.

Does the missile actually have to physically touch the hitbox to explode instead of exploding in close proximity like they do IRL?

Contact with the hitbox mesh is required, yes.

You can make it so that the contact for all jets is equal, either by manipulating missile tracking potential or jets hitbox mesh/heatsource placement.

The fact that BF2 missiles lack proximity fuse isnt bad, its actually good. But its like the settings are completely wrong so it just came out bad.

STA missile range was cut back from 375 to 300, if anyone was wondering.

I disagree. If AA missiles exploded in close proximity of its target we would have minimal TK's from AA missiles since the missile would explode when it hits a flare instead of finding a new target.

Good point. Missiles exploding midair is a cool sight but proximity fuses are in place in BF2 mods in order to overcome network lag. You can overcome network lag if you know why the missiles miss and how to fix that. Its a combination of missile maneuverability/tracking code (15 second fix once you have the files open) and jets hitbox mesh peculiarities (takes some time to create the mesh). Besides, Im not sure if anyone has figured out whether or not you can make missiles explode in contact with the flares.

Basically, the fact that missiles can miss J10 and F18 even when seemingly a whole metre or two off their backs the problem is still in coding. (then again, its simple. Flares into solid objects with a fairly large hitbox and voila)

Personally, I would love a combination of reliable missiles with proximity fuses that deal ~30% damage if not in direct impact and 51% with direct impact, with a detonation if it hits the flares. 15 flares a pop for maximum flare reliability.

However, this is BF2 and DICE. The solution, the way I see it, should be the least technical, fastest and most reliable without compromising how the game works.

                                Proximity fuses for mods.
