Take it this way. Sniping is a highly specialized form of playingin every game. Youre potentially the most voulnerable target and your strenghts come up only through extensive and vigorous practice, aswell as general gameplay experience. The fact that you suck can only come from 2 things.

      A) You havent played enough
      B) You havent opened yourself up to new methods

Solution to A, start playing Sniper kit, suck the bad KDR up and keep going
Solution to A*, if you hit a standstill, start learning through others skill and experience

Dont expect much until youve accumulated at least 100 hours of raw, pure, continuous sniping time.

The only things that take awhile to get used to are hitting moving targets and the bullet drop. It doesn't take 100 hours IMO if you are already proficient with the other rifles.

Sure it doesnt. Thats exactly what all 2:1 KDR snipers say.

And 2:1 only because of the claymores...

Your KDR depends on your style, so of course a camping sniper can get a much better KDR than a mobile sniper, but the mobile one will get more points most of the time.

For choppers you can be picked off by TV missiles well beyond your own conceivable range. On a map like Kubra, where there is actually some terrain to take cover around it becomes easier. Not easy mind you, but easier. However, a skilled chopper pilot will always beat a skilled tank driver, simply based on the usefulness of the vehicles. Choppers can strike from ranges and angles that are impossible for the tank driver to counter, and choppers can go over any terrain at speeds much higher than a tank. If you find tank drivers staying alive for a whole round, chances are his team has all the good pilots.

If you're going to tank, make sure you have some friends in jihad cars to kill enemy tanks.

But, I only jihad and snipe there :S

I find that I have a set of rules that I never really became aware of until I told someone else how to snipe.

The first part is judging distances to a target. The best way to do this is simply create your own squad and 'T' select "Attack Here" This will give you the exact distance required.

Second is finding the proper gun. My favorite is the L96, but I learned from the M24 because it excels at farther distances than that of the SVD or Type 88

Next is how to make a shot after you've determined the range.

Anything less than 100M is a direct hit with regards to crosshair(CH) placement(except for the SVD which is to the left of the crosshair) meaning headshot will be simply the crosshairs on his head.

After about 125-150m until about 200m you need to aim at the top of the enemy's head for a headshot kill.

After about 225m you need to aim above his head by about the length of the crosshair's height(all except for the gi-normous M95 CH's which means just up and slightly to the center left of the CH)
This is where the L96 excels its small CH lines enable equates to easier discretion with shots resulting in more successful hits.

After about 300m you'll need to go half of a head's distance above the target, plus to the left or the right of him in the opposite direction he is running is you're playing on a server with more than your ping offset(default in config is set to 100) so if you're playing with 120 Ping, aim to the left of him as he runs rights; likewise with 80 ping lead your target and shoot ahead of him.

At about 400 Meters you need to get at least 2/3 to a full heads distance above your target to make the shot. There is also height to be considered into the equation.

                    * If you're above your target is below you, you may not need to raise so high, aiming lower is always better if you're not sure of your success; a body shot is still a hit.

And the final and best tip: Because everything I mentioned is determined on successful practice, is to ensure you hold down your fire button after the shot to see where the bullet landed.

At first when I played I thought to that my shots were always dead one. After playing games like CS 1.6 and DoD: Source I thought I had mastered sniping. But only in BF2 could I ever hope to make a 427m headshot.

No. Your KDR depends on your skill and experience. In order to refine both, you need manhours put into the game. Proper shooting technique also has to be ironed out. The best snipers in BF2 are dedicated snipers, meaning, theyve put as much hours into sniping, as dedicated pilots have put into flying.

Hell, that number 100h is a crude underestimation of how much you really need to become a good sniper, and not a 1:x KDR player with a Sniper kit.

Unless you are a slow learner, the only tactic or skill that a player may not have mastered as a sniper by the 50 hour mark is the drag shooting that only a handful of players can do effectively. That I will give you takes hours upon hours of practice, but the rest can be picked up pretty quickly.

As I said, if youre content with being a 2:1 KDR claymore marksman, then sure, it doesnt take much time to become that one. Sniping is a highly specialized field of expertiese. Just so were being on the same page, Im talking about a new player, not a new sniper. It may or may not be easier for a somewhat experienced groundpounder.

But frankly, I dont know of any good snipers that are good on the field, and have less than 100 hours with their kit, that right there tells you whats up.

You definitely 'knew' one. It did take me 8 months to get over 100 hours as a sniper after all.
