I for one prefer to have more options to choose from when playing a game. I see people moaning about the lack of game modes which EA has provided us with, when IO is in effect a different game mode in itself.

Don't like it? Don't play it. It certainly didn't mess up BF2 with vehicles. If anything, it helped it because it drew away the idiots.
Im afraid IO is no longer an option... probably 90% of Bf2 servers are IO maps wich is completely retarded, coz

    1) Lets face it, inf combat in Bf2 is terrible.
    2) When Bf2 was made it had focus on combined arms

          lol

If you look at nowadays dogfights, in 7 out of every 10 fatal hits, the attacker has attached himself behind the target in the same following maneuver. If we take a "radar guided missile" that works by keeping the target in the lock-on reticle (could be as big as the circles on HUDs right now", we have a missile system that demands at least as much dedication and skill, if not more. But instead of just fire-and-forget action, the attacker has to stick on the target for a good few extra seconds. Makes for a nice challenge. And if you balance it out using various factors, both jet maneuverability related, aswell as missile related (lock time, missile speed, lock on cone, distance, activation time, et cetera), you can have a fairly exciting ballgame in the air.

But that being said, you can make the current fire and forget missiles just as skill demanding. Simply by altering a few numbers.

Maybe you dont remember all the crying the infantry grunts did before IO came along.

"Waaaah, tank is too strong, my favourite kit is support!" et cetera...

Catering to the vocal minority ate my FPS, so to speak.
One can argue that had it not been for the I/O option BF2 would not have such a strong following this far down the road. Just because the option is there doesnt mean you have to play it. Meaning the majority of players remaining today chooses I/O over vanilla.

I for one love I/O and can honestly say that I would not be playing BF2 today had they not implemented I/O. Lets not forget that the option also increased BF2's traffic flow. People just like myself that left BF2 returned the day patch 1.4 was released.

I've come to love both I/O and vanilla but had it not been for I/O I would not have returned (along with my clan members and a few other clans I personally know) and never come to appreciate vanilla.

I have said this before...no one purchased BF2 with the intention of not playing vehicles. What drew so many away from vehicles was the uncountable imbalances that came along with them. Try to understand that there are people out there that prefers to run and gun over hopping in vehicles. There could be 3 j10's, 2 helo's, and 5 tanks placed less than 2 feet away from them and they would opt to be on foot. I was one of those people. I tried my damnest to excell as a ground pounder pre-1.4 but it was nearly impossible. BF2 rewarded those who got a vehicle first and forgot about the soldiers fighting on 2 legs. It was such a discouraging feeling. Only after many balance tweaks and nerfing did the ground pounder stand a chance.

Im speaking for all the ground pounders out there like myself that were just pretty much fed up that they were left out and forgotten about. The amount I/O players today proves that there was a lot of us out there than most thought. I've been enjoying BF2 more than I ever had in the past. I love having the option to get my vehicle fix from time to time and my I/O fix when need be. I find myself in vehicle servers more than I/O nowadays but I'm glad to have the option to switch over to I/O when ever I choose.

I think the main reason infantry get hosed on vehicle maps is the way the engine shows cover. To the guy on the ground, he's camoflaged running through the tall grass and bushes. To the guy in the chopper or jet or tank, he's running on bare dirt at any distance. Even if you try to crawl everywhere, the player models stand out against the terrain. It's an issue with sniping, too. New guy hides in the grass thinking he's invisible while everyone more than 10 feet away sees some dude in a funny suit lying on the ground.

Theres is no proof that BF2 increased played numbers by adding IO. In fact, the player numbers have always steadily decreased. IO wasnt BF2s saviour, you can ditch that convenient lie.

If youre talking about vehicular inbalance, you can ditch that aswell. I can understand people complaining about jets, but when people complained about tanks and APCs in Oman, things got ridiculous. In essence, people wanted DICE to ditch vehicles, because they didnt want to ditch their favourite kit.

                No.

I wasn't saying I like infantry only. I rarely play those servers. I was saying I only like playing BF2 if I'm the guy in a vehicle raping the hell out of practically defenseless grunts.

Actually Chris I was talking about vehicular inbalance amongst ground pounders. Pre 1.4 infantry hardly stood a chance against armor and air.

As to the proof of whether BF2's player count increased....well I have none but I firmly believe it helped its longevity instead of hindering it.

I dont think you were ever truly a ground pounder Chris. You took to the skies....nothing wrong with that but because of that you hardly had to face many of the inbalances us ground pounders dealt with. Not to mention the messed up hit boxes and dolphin diving, c4 chucking, noob toobers. On top of that you had artillery, air and armor to deal with. It was a freaking nightmare. Trust me.

^^You are on the botton of the food chain when your infantry. Wtf do you want? Every class to have AT lauchers or to be able to take out tanks with assault rifles?

When im playing Bf2 with a couple of friends and we decide to go ground pounding, i have never had such problems with vehicles. All you need is a medic, support and 2 AT. Tanks and APC's are underpowered if anything.

I have about 500 hours total in total infantry activities in BF2. When I stopped playing, I averaged around 2:1 KDR, playing medic in only vehicular servers. My "speciality" was SQL-ing.

Vehicles, ground vehicles that is, stood less chance against infantry in 1.0, than they do today. C4 chucking is gone, which means that no longer is SpecOps the number 1 threat against tankers in Karkand for example. Back then, you could throw C4 dozens and dozens of feet in the air, dolphin dive your way around and detonate the charges, while spinning in midair, in a flat position. Back the, anti-tanks killed tanks in 3 shots or less. You will find, as a comparision, that tanks survive less against ATs in the Demo (1.0), than they do against them today.

The only real problem were the jets/choppers, as STA sites launched missiles which had turning radii smaller than jets/choppers maneuvering capabilities. You had to plan the missile shots against choppers, and against jets, it was significantly harder Nevertheless, I got at least a 1:1 KDR against jets/choppers while being in STA, so that is a still a major count.

And lastly, as Waaah pointed out, I had never any illusions about my position in the food chain. I knew that my task was to survive, and evade confrontation with vehicles, to get my squad to the flag, fight infantry, and GTFO before the first bombs drop on the flag.

You make it sound so easy....like it was as simple as 1,2,3. You had too many sh** to evade. You had UAV's to evade, commander spotting, plus artillery. Im no infantry noob and Im very comfortable on my feet so please stop speaking to me as if I have no clue what Im talking about. My account is 90% ground pounding and 10% vehicles.

If you doubt my skills thats your business.
