Depends on how you like to play. There's many ways to be successful. If you got fast reactions and a good aim, stealth is not always necessary.
If being stealthy is your thing and you can handle long range weapons, that'll do too.

Like I said, you gotta find your own way. There is no universal tactic that works for everyone.

Good players definately know every last corner of the map and the most common spawn points too (not for S&D of course). That allows you to predict the ways of the opponents.
On these small maps you always have to expect an enemy coming around the corner too, that'll give you the edge when it happens.

Watching demos from good players or speccing them in a server would help too I guess.

i too am finding it difficult to be a pub allstar in this game like i was in bf2. i cant seem to get any rhythm from round to round. my scores are always inconsistent. i think i might be in the wrong place for pr0 info tho....

Best piece of advice I can say to you. That you may or may not like. Try everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Different Perk combo's, different weapons, everything. That is pro advice right there. Don't ask for how other people do it. Go do it yourself. I mean me, I came here saying "I'm gonna be a sniper" Now, I'm not half bad. But I much prefer the G36 or MP5. I'm also MUCH more effective with them. Also, everyone says that Dead Silence isn't that good. I find myself good with it. Things like that. Go out, experiment, and get good. And really, no one consistently gets an excellent score. I will go 1:5 K and then on the next map I'll go 5:1.

I've been going through the different perks and trying ones I wouldn't normally use. I've come up with a couple of combos I really like, but they have 'special applications' and aren't great for general pub play. It's been fun and educational.

I also have the same weapon prefs for most maps and enjoy Dead Silence. Also, I have the same inconsistent play. One round I totally suck. The next I'm king of the hill... It's interesting how this happens.

I can say that, not only have I the same problem with COD4, but I also have the same issue with SWAT4.

A very, very akward remedy is there though. When I didnt have net access to BF2 for 2 weeks, I was playing SP maps, using Engineer and shotgun only, setting all enemy bots skill level to exceptionally high, using some file tweaking.

The result was simple. Due to my absolutely different infantry gameplay style, I went from a 2:1/1:1 KDR, to an absolutely shocking 15:1. But only for one round. By the time the round ended, I succumbed into my "old routine".

I find my best rounds are the ones where I consistently come at my opponents from the direction they least expect. What turns a good round into a great round, is combining this with a kit choice that's ideal for that map and game type.

That of course comes with the caveat, "Easier said then done," but I think figuring out how to do this consistently is far more important then what weapon or perks you have.
