Depends on how you like to play. There's many ways to be successful. If you got fast reactions and a good aim, stealth is not always necessary.
If being stealthy is your thing and you can handle long range weapons, that'll do too.
Like I said, you gotta find your own way. There is no universal tactic that works for everyone.
Good players definately know every last corner of the map and the most common spawn points too (not for S&D of course). That allows you to predict the ways of the opponents.
On these small maps you always have to expect an enemy coming around the corner too, that'll give you the edge when it happens.
Watching demos from good players or speccing them in a server would help too I guess.
