they left because there was a melt down at the nuclear facility in Chernobyl, which caused massive amounts of radiation in the surrounding areas. If you stayed there you would die, as did alot of the people who lived around it, due to radiation poisoning and cancer.

Ahh thanks, I get it now, but then how come the SAS guys and those Spetsnaz guys go there? Wouldn't they die?

Isn't it wierd how Prypat is just deserted, that's so creepy, c'mon lets go play airsoft there!! :P

Chernobyl? Nuclear plant blows up, radiation, blast radius.

        Hence empty.

Very basic explanation why no one lives there.

There is still enough radiation there anyways.

EDIT: kr1kit got to it waay before, didnt even see the second page.

to answer your second question, there are pockets in which the radiation is very minimal, hence MacMillan tells you to stick to him, as he knows those places.

So much attention to detail. :o

Looks much better than S.T.A.L.K.E.R did.

If you want exact figures on how long it will take to clean up the place safely:

The strontium-90 will decay over a similar time. Strontium is a beta emitter with a long biological halflife in humans, which can cause disease through internal exposure.

yeah but seeing the in game pic of where zarcherev or whatever his name is makes the deal and u shoot him, they were standing right outside the powerplant that blew and in game it says 16 years ago so that would mean the melt down occured 5 years or so before that level in the game, i dont think they would be making a deal right outside of it (thats where radiation is heaviest)

and also the giant cover thing over the powerplant that keeping the remaining radiation from coming out is indanger of collapsing, if it did noone would be able to visit the area anymore but a new better shield is being constructed and is due to be done by 2012

if you want to read and see a whole dairy kinda thing go here

The concrete sarcophagus was built within that year (1986), which did significantly reduce the radiation.

15 years ago from 2007 would be 1992. Which is 7 years after the meltdown, a large enough time for the radiation to subside, and be under tight monitoring. It is only recently that the sarcophagus is known to be undergoing wear and tear, otherwise it was seen as effective, it is still safe to go to Chernobyl/Pripyat, just isn't safe to stay there very long, or be around the buildings for extended periods of time.

                  Similarities - Chernobyl ~ In-Game

                  Something Random.

On the Gillied Up mission I noticed how similar the map looked to real life pictures i've seen before. Just Thought I would share .

you got that right the workers there have to work 2 weeks then get off 2 weeks so they do not get alot of radiation exposure
