Regardless of people being afraid to die, most bf2 players are just too damn stupid not to run into a MG. I have gotten MANY kills in both BF2 and PR not counting other games/mods where I've been providing covering fire and players not even "fighting" in the current battle get wasted by the spray.
It works in SWAT4, but only because it is effective at what it does. The maps layout favours it aswell as the maps generally are FULL wil junctions and spots perfect for "lockdowns". In TSS exp pack, you get the M249 LMG, which you can use to lock down entire sections of the map, is sccessful.
Why the concept in SWAT4 works a little better than in other games, is that if you use supressive fire, you either get the kill, or the enemy backs off for an alternate tactical approach. There are stupid people who will try, of course, and a so called "eye level fire bug" sometimes helps them. But generally, if you open fire from an M4A1 into the doorway, the noise itsself (weapon sounds are loud and effective in SWAT4) will make the enemy stop from coming through. Your teammate can use that stop time to throw in a stinger, flashbang or a CS canister. The fact that SWAT4 weapons are very accurate, helps aswell. Ive seen it being used extensively during a few clan matches aswell. Supressing fire was also one of the major concepts I taught to my clan back when I played the game extensively.
As for PR, you can see that Sup fire has been extensively promoted in PR due to the extra sounds and whatnot, however BF2 as a game, as a whole, does not favour the concept.
It works sometimes. I've used it when playing in a good squad.
The only way for it to be ever be truly effective, however, is if the penalties for dying were increased - 2 minute respawn for example - but we all know that will never happen.
LMAO
seriously, you can try supressive fire but the enemy will just nadespam you down
FipZ
Thats the whole point, you negate the enemy passage and action, but you need to think a step further because a smart enemy will break the stalemate. Supressive fire is chosen for a reason, that being supporting or buying time for a specific action.
How much time am I buying?
5 seconds untill the grenade kills me?
I better throw some myself as supressive fire, I guess thats the only supressive fire that works: Nades. lol

If you play it like that, you are ASKING for a nade. Supressive fire earns a nade. In SWAT4 (again, examples are abundant), you use supressive fire to negate an enemy passage in the corridor. You then hear a sound of weapons change (usually for the nade), what do you do?
A) Change position
B) Let your teammate nade the spot
C) Rush in while the enemy is holding a nade against your rifle
You dont sleep, you act.
Now, thats general gaming. In BF2, sup fire rarely works because of high damage tolerance, cone of fire and horrible terrain.

What a pitty that BF2 is not SWAT4
I know what supressive fire is for but I never saw it working in BF2 because of the ususal one shot kill I receive in such situation from guns like L85A1 or
AK-101. It's just not working in BF2 because it's just not working in BF2
I don't sleep, I act OR I just throw a nade and engage the squad I want to supress and buy the time that way. I will die most of the times but, hey, thats BF2 and just a game.
Indeed. I just did that yesterday. We were holding second floor with my teammate, we had one bloke at the bottom staircase in the corridor junction. I let loose a barrage at the door because he was trying to lean in and get a pop shot out. He managed to lean once, but not fire, but he identified my level of protection (helmet, no CS gas protection) so I heard that he was changing his gear (noise of weapon switch). So I ran into him, peppered him full of 5.56 goodness while he was just throwing a CS grenade and rushed back to the second floor.
There are games where little bits like these work and make the game multidimensional. In BF2, cone of fire and those 4-5 shot kills just dont let that happen. You can supress enemy with an APC and tank though.
