More like it's pretty common for up and coming developers fresh out of college/university to begin with mods.
The majority of small-time developing companies target mod developers, because hidden talent is easier to find in proven experience, than on a random resume picked out of a pile of resumes.
Not to mention, that the work done on a mod can be listed under both, 'examples of work' and 'experience.' on a resume.
