    Alternative Kits

Disclaimer: This is totally hypothetical. The following suggests huge changes in gameplay that I would never expect to happen… it’s just an idea.

I was getting frustrated the other night about some of the standards for each kit… I asked myself questions like “why do I have x number of clips and x number of grenades, x number of landmines” and so on. When using the G3, I wish that I could give up 2 of my grenades and carry two extra clips instead. Or (with Special Forces) I’d give up the grappling hook for more flash-bangs… depending on the situation.

Then the idea hit me: what if there were no kits, and you had the choice of the equipment you wanted to carry? To prevent everyone from carrying everything that they could want, each item would have a specified weight. Your character would be allowed to carry a max of say, 120 lbs… but each pound you add decreases your mobility. Higher weight would decrease your walk and run speed, and lower the height of your jumps. Perhaps at an extremely high weight, you would be incapable of using ladders. Increased weight would also cause you to take longer going prone or standing back up.

With this, each player would be able to create their own hybrid kit. You could carry more weapons and equipment to be more prepared for different situations, but you would have to trade off mobility. So a guy that decided to carry a PKM, AT missile, assault rifle, sniper rifle and 10 grenades would have a weapon for every situation, but would hardly be able to move if you started firing on him. A special ops player could opt to not carry grenades and extra clips, and maybe even give up the pistol to have far superior speed to others on the battlefield, and maybe carry some extra C4 for destroying all those assets.

This makes me think of another flexibility (but this could get really complicated). What if players could choose the build of their character (big strong guy or tiny quick guy)? A larger character could carry more weight effectively, but would be a larger target… and vice-versa for a small character.

Sure there are loopholes and issues with this. You wouldn’t want somebody to be able to carry 20 claymores and throw them at every flag on the map. But this would offer a chance to put a different spin on the structure of the game.

Dual knives for close combat anyone?

I don’t play a whole lot of first person shooters so maybe this already exists in others. But, I’ve only seen this in role-playing games.

Like I said, I know this has flaws. Constructive criticism is welcome.

Imagine how long it would take to load a map, with all those unique kits being used, and how could you run up and switch kits if there is no standard?
Lag would be worse than it already is imo too.

You have to be careful making posts like this because someone at EA/Dice might think that its a good Idea and make the changes that you suggest, even if you made them in jest.

Im not very happy with the current state of the game either though. But who am I? . . . . . . . .Red

They wouldn't have to. This idea stinks of Minimizing/Maximizing no matter how you impliment it.

          This isn't an MMORPG.

i think if you get in a jet or chopper your kit should change to a pilot kit.
it would stop a lot of the TKing and force ppl to get awards by using the kits.
and not just saying hmm i want my sniper award but im crap at sniping so il just bomb ppl.
i know the same ppl would just fight over tanks and stuff but you have a lot more OPs to take out a tank.
plus you could give the pilot some cool stuff for his kit .
a downed pilot would draw a lot of fire but

thats a great idea, and no your not the first to think of it. How is that at all a MMORPG? so just because a game gives you the option to customize something, its automatically world of warcraft? I think its a great idea, but not realistic.

its good to dream of this, but it wont happen. You have to remember videogames have limitations, if it didn't, trust me no one would buy 2 different games. I think it would be a good idea, but to elaborate, there should be limitations to certain quantities, such as clays, regardless of weight. And one thing is for sure theres gonna be 1 or 2 combos that everyone is going to use. and some weapons will be left unused.

anyone who says that this is a bad idea, other than the fact that it would cause technical difficulties, plays karkand exclusively and is happy with the support kit.

I won't deny for a second that there are problems with it. I'd imagine that by the time you set up all the limitations, the list would be huge. If someone could carry a wrench, ammo bags, medic bags, and be able to revive... you'd have a super-stat-padding setup.

And Neptune, I think you're absolutely right about there being favorite combos. Like with the original Medal of Honor... there were several different guns, but everyone used the MP40 or Thompson.

It might be a little like an MMORPG, but the 'experience' part of the game wouldn't be there... and that makes it totally different. You can play battlefield 1 hour a week and still be on an even playing field with those that play 6 hours a day.

                          good idea
Can a g36e hold a gl? and even if it can there can be limitations.
this reminds me of ghost recon advanced warfighter (think that s the name). you can choose your main gun, pistol, if you want a gl or not, mabey a shotty instead of gl, how many nades. you only get one main gun tho...

i think this would be a good idea for bf2, but you have to limit it to one main gun, one pistol and one special abilty (medic, support, engineer, special forces, sniper (dam claymor is their special abiltity)....). you get your choice of weapon, pistol, nades (flashes or smoke or frag or a combination), ability, body armor, and ammo. all of these things have weight and volume tho so you cant just have 200 nades and things will slow you down. even if you chose not to have a main gun or pistol and drop your weight, you are still limited to the number of nades you can have just because you dont have room to attach them to your body.

 Best weapon ever...(not the e, c, or k series, just the regular G36, my Far Cry days coming out).

I had a similar idea to this. They have the ranking system in place to keep people engrossed in the game, but unfortunately, it doesn't work too well with a FPS. I know a lot of people love stats, but plenty of us couldn't care less. If we had the chance to be able to customize kits, then more people would be more interested for much longer.

Take the things that would be abused(say claymores), and only allow up to 4 to be carried. Make it so you have to choose between grenades and claymores, or only allow two to be dropped at a time(or whatever).

I'd like to see more modability in unique characters. And this wouldn't change much in loading times and lag. Seeing as this would(if it were ever introduced) would be the last generation of DX9 games, I'm sure Dice could get SOMETHING right. I don't hold that large of a grudge on them. Maybe we'll even see a DX10 BF game. Either way, everything in a kit would be assigned a code, and depending on your unique kit, your kit gets a pin number assigned by what is in it. The pin number would be read by my client, and decoded to figure out what's in the kit. Any person who can code a game, even Dice and BF2, could make this pin number system work.

Like I said...more modable characters, means more of a connection to them, which means more players, and more time played.
