Disclaimer: This is totally hypothetical. The following suggests huge changes in gameplay that I would never expect to happen… it’s just an idea.
I was getting frustrated the other night about some of the standards for each kit… I asked myself questions like “why do I have x number of clips and x number of grenades, x number of landmines” and so on. When using the G3, I wish that I could give up 2 of my grenades and carry two extra clips instead. Or (with Special Forces) I’d give up the grappling hook for more flash-bangs… depending on the situation.
Then the idea hit me: what if there were no kits, and you had the choice of the equipment you wanted to carry? To prevent everyone from carrying everything that they could want, each item would have a specified weight. Your character would be allowed to carry a max of say, 120 lbs… but each pound you add decreases your mobility. Higher weight would decrease your walk and run speed, and lower the height of your jumps. Perhaps at an extremely high weight, you would be incapable of using ladders. Increased weight would also cause you to take longer going prone or standing back up.
With this, each player would be able to create their own hybrid kit. You could carry more weapons and equipment to be more prepared for different situations, but you would have to trade off mobility. So a guy that decided to carry a PKM, AT missile, assault rifle, sniper rifle and 10 grenades would have a weapon for every situation, but would hardly be able to move if you started firing on him. A special ops player could opt to not carry grenades and extra clips, and maybe even give up the pistol to have far superior speed to others on the battlefield, and maybe carry some extra C4 for destroying all those assets.
This makes me think of another flexibility (but this could get really complicated). What if players could choose the build of their character (big strong guy or tiny quick guy)? A larger character could carry more weight effectively, but would be a larger target… and vice-versa for a small character.
Sure there are loopholes and issues with this. You wouldn’t want somebody to be able to carry 20 claymores and throw them at every flag on the map. But this would offer a chance to put a different spin on the structure of the game.
Dual knives for close combat anyone?
I don’t play a whole lot of first person shooters so maybe this already exists in others. But, I’ve only seen this in role-playing games.
Like I said, I know this has flaws. Constructive criticism is welcome.
