Yeah, but they lost how many more million? To you, it might not seem like a big deal, but with a company that is used to the relative income they generate, losing 20 million in sales is a big deal.

Actually, a correction to the correction...DiCE was supposed to release BF2 much earlier then June, 2005. The rumor was, so it would help in the second quarter earnings report. Because as DiCE put it December/November before the release, they were edging close to going Gold. And from all the E3/preview stuff, DiCE made it very clear they were very far along and expected to release earlier rather than later.

I am sure 2142 is superiour in many respects engine wise. What do think would happen with an engine having 2 million players bug hunting it for 12 months, then have the original team fix those problems, instead of a satellite office, while putting in all the extra features that did not make deadline?

Really, though, I don't want to wish so much ill-will to DiCE that EA decides to close down the company. They have done it before to a few very well-selling gaming shops.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people with guns. BF2 doesn't fail at team work, the people playing it do. If players need to be so led by the hand to understand how to work together than they are the failures.
It's not a matter of how to work together it's about why they should work together. If the game isn't constructed to encourage teamwork then why should they work together as a team?

Wow.... I mean.... wow. I've read some ridiculous statements on here before, but this one is priceless. Why should they work together as a team? I dunno... maybe so they actually WIN? Maybe because it's more effective (not to mention enjoyable) than being a smacktard rambo-a$$ punk? Don't get me wrong, I think a lot of the things they put into 2142 to further encourage teamplay are good ideas, but anyone that needs to ask that question needs a frying pan to the side of his head.

As for the people on here bigging up 2142--I agree with you for the most part. I like the new unlock system as it encourages specialization (though it's basically just a rip-off of the talent system in WoW). Titan mode sure is awesome, too, but it kinda has to be because the maps are boring as hell without it (as others have commented). When I was playing the beta/demo, I quickly found myself skipping any servers in the list that were on Conquest mode because Conquest in BF2 is about 10x better.

As for the airpower, I agree that it was a good idea to tone down the aircraft a bit from their height in vanilla BF2, but they went WAY overboard with it. They did about 10 different things to nerf the crap out of aircraft when 7 or 8 would've been plenty. A large part of the reason I didn't want to buy it is because I figured there would be twice as much airfield drama as there is in BF2 since there are only half as many aircraft to fight over with just as many players. Top that off with the fact that, although the gunships are fun, they're not NEARLY as fun as they were in beta (they used to handle like a dream, but then they screwed them up so now they feel like a flying bathtub). And as if that wasn't bad enough, the EMP missiles go through the countermeasure shield?? Give me a break... they had the balance perfect in Armored Fury, and then made the mistake of listening to a vocal minority of ground-pounding whiners out there who still weren't happy because they catch a 500-lber in the face once in a while.

I admit I was half-tempted to get 2142 for a while there too, just because Titan mode is pretty damn cool (as are the new unlocks--I sure wish I could get a stealth generator in BF2!!). But heck, half the maps are pure infantry (trying to recreate Karkand five times over) and don't even HAVE Titan mode. The bottom line is that it's fun, but definitely not worth the pricetag IMO.

Typical pubber response. How about, oh I don't know...to WIN? Most pubs seem to be full of morons that are perfectly content to sit around throwing grenades at spawn points, or sniping from a crane, losing round, after round, after round. As long as you aren't made to play as a team and still get some useless virtual trinket, it's ok to blame the game not giving you points to make it worth it to try harder and actually get a better gameplay experiance.

Yea, not doubt. While 12 million may sound like a lot, after you pay 500+ people with 50,000+ a year salaries, on top of marketing expense, and a **** ton of other business related overhead, that ain't much.

God, to be honest with you, I feel the same way. I get into so many pub servers with people that just want to run around shooting, but have little intention of winning. They are just happy to spawn and shoot at something...like snipers that think it is a great idea to just run out infront of an assault kit (no match).

The idea is to win. And if at all possible be the number one person on the server. Often, it is easy to be the number one person on a server when you are in a squad and getting team and combat points! Kind of hard to take flags when you are not in a squad.

There is no incentive to win, thats the problem.

If all players benefited from winning as muc has the commander does, youd see the little stat whores playing for their lives.

Negative, it would create HUGE problems with team stacking and team switching.

In order to play for the victory, you have to create the game model which makes you play that way, from the benefits, up to map design. You cant fix BF2 to be played like that, you will have to create a whole new game.

Crack human phsichology, or at least learn behaviour patterns and that "banana" they want, and you can make a good game.

The lack in the actual will to play for win can be observed in most games, even in those without stats.

I think there is a desire to dominate for those that push for a win. Hard to say if it is just that a lot of the people I encounter are just passive people, but I quickly pickup on whom the alphas are on the server round after round.

I don't like loosing, I don't like getting pistol whipped. I want my name at the top of this list at the end of the round and that might be the drive that makes some teams just walk over others.

So, a desire to win is what people need in the game...and the carrot of getting Gold, Silver, or just in the top five has lost its luster.

It's been my experience that most people have no desire to improve themselves and are content with drifting through life. If their lot is to improve they look for others to do it for them. If they aren't hungry to win in real life, how can they be expected to want to win in a game, especially one which rewards them for doing otherwise?

Exactly. I quickly found really no reason to try to win in the game, especially when its up to 31 other players on my team. Besides, game mode really inspires people to jump from flag to flag without actually even thinking about th ebig picture. On the other hand there are games with a little better gamemode where victory relies on YOU. The best game mode ever created by man is definitely Capture The Flag, especially if its played with less than 10 vs 10 people. In there, you can quickly realise that the whole battle revolves around a single flag, and you can measure your own input. People who actually play CTD dont do it for fragging so you already have a great filtration/selection tool available to you.

Same here. Special Forces is still my favorite Battlefield game, and even after many hours of play it's still exciting and fresh.

Team Fortress Classic 1.5, with progressive advancement toward an increasingly difficult "main base" has always been my favorite FPS.
