I agree that many things in 2142 aren't intuitive. When you see a tank, you have preconception of what the vehicle is capable of. But in the game, tank's are often helpless against infantry with or without a gunner. Agreed on this point but DICE clearly wanted vehicles to play a less dominant role and I've seen enough tank whoring in BF2 to last a lifetime. Further, the tanks are still deadly in 2142 and capable of crushing infantry even without a gunner. As you mentioned, a smart player can make all the difference and this is how it should be. Many times in BF2 a smart player was still unable to effectively neutralize enemy armor without some severe tactical errors by the enemy (at least that's my experience on public servers! ).

As for my comment on APC's being too powerful, that was poor choice of words. I was merely responding to Redfield's (lol, Resident Evil 1 owned for PSX) comment that APCs are basically just for "getting there", and not really any troop support. APC's do inspire major fear into kits without any anti-infantry capabilities, but they're easily neutralized just like every other vehicle. But against infantry they're superior to tanks which again is counter intuitive and definitely contributes to your larger point.

2142 is sort of a game that requires the player to learn the roles of each weapon because they don't often function like you might imagine, but the net result is there is far less "Death from above" and less "I just spawned and now I'm dead" than BF2."

It's getting late here and my mind is sort of fuzzy. My last comment will be regarding the role of APC's in BF2. They were, in function, nothing more than tanks in terms of their role on the battlefield. Primarily used for spawn camping and not troop transport. Further, pretty much everyone hated sitting in any of the gunner seats with their limited view and dinky machine gun. In comparison, APC's in 2142 are fantastic for troop transport and are in fact used that way reasonably often. I don't happen to play Titan maps anymore because Conquest allows for 64 players and right now that's my preference. On the infantry based Conquest maps, APC's are usually filled with 3-4+ players and are great for taking the back flags which I guess qualifies as troop tansport.

Okay, brain isn't functioning properly so hopefully some of that made sense. Sleep is good. Zzz...

Also, I would rather have 8 classes that are a little bit similar then 3 classes in BF2.

        Sniper
        Support
        Medic

        This is untrue,

if you wanted to get the full out of battlefield2, you would form a squad.

        two medics, for reviving/healing
        sniper,
        and assualt,
and on tank bias map then maybe anti tank guy,
        and ofcourse support for re-supply.
its up to you if you like to run around reviving random teammates without any purpose surely.

thus making full use of all the classes, which all have there own specific forte.

i think this is how the game was designed to be played, and if your struggling to find servers which play liek this, look harder there are loads. failing that promote teamwork in the servers you play in. if its new to people i think they would soon realise how they should have been playing battlefield.

I've played the full version of both. BF2 is the winner in my book, but BF2142 does have several improvements/new features that I would love to see introduced into BF2. But, like others have said, that won't ever happen.

I'm a gameplayer first, a BF2 forum member second. How am I biased if I say 2142 sucks? This is not from a BF2 bias, but from years and years of playing all types of games since Quake, Doom and Duke3D. I think I have a pretty good handle on what is good and what is not.

When I first played the BF2 demo map, Gulf of Oman, after playing Counterstrike at that point, I was like "hell yeah, this looks like a good game" (even with all the bugs that showed up later).

When I played the 2142 demo, I was like "Ugh.." then I played the full version at a friends house (he was dumb enough to buy the full version, now it's uninstalled), I was not impressed either. My sole comment was "This has been dumbed down"

Every new game out now is being dumbed down so that it takes no skill to get kills. The difference between CS 1.6 and CS: Source was huge. In CS:S I could point in your general direction and get a headshot - I didn't even have to try anymore. BOOOOOOOooooooorrrrring.

This is mt view, If DICE would have made the BF2 guns customizable BF2, would be PWNING. Yet, I like BF2142 more because of the fact you can unlock guns, etc., (One thing I love when you have to unlock claymores, so NO Claymore whoring.) Plus, in 2142 you rank up faster.

i like the feel and look of bf2, but i like the play of 2142. the weapon attatchments, combined kits (ie assault/medic)..if there was some way to make BF2 have that it'd be king...until then i still like 2142

Bias over younger generations perhaps, rather they have different opinions over fun gameplay, decent graphics and cool looking big toys in 2142.

That is totally your decision. Personally I like BF2 because it has a lighter atmosphere and it isn't so dark. But different people have different opinions and nothing we say could actually really convince them.

I was contemplating buying bf2142 but bf2 theme is better. I can really identify with the target I'm about to smoke.

Re: BF2 or 2142? that is the question....

I have played a lot of BF2 (850+ hours) and tried the BF2142 beta (man it was bad) then the BF2142 demo (much more polished but bad choice of map and didn't like infantry movement). I still went ahead and bought the full version and I've played it ever since. After I got the sprint unlocks and a few others that are essential I like inf much more in 2142.

No more dolphin diving, bunny hopping or other monkey manouvers, models look more natural and bigger, weapons work fine when you get used to them (love the optics). You can crouch or prone and get past claymores, (YAY!!!!) with the Zeller sniper you can also blow them up, more balanced sides (with the exception of Fall of Berlin I don't care anymore which side I start on (china maps was a nightmare in BF2)).

The gunships work fine if you are 2 in them but you actually fear ground defence (YAY!!), the viewing distance is good on most maps so it's fun to be a sniper with the 4x scope unlock and stabilizer. Combining the kits was also a great move, you can now be an assault with a rocket launcher, medic hub and a defib for instance and sniper/recon with C4, clay and an assault rifle.

I just laugh when I read about ppl bying a new game and spending like one hour with it before they stop playing.. Like BF2 wasn't a big change from BF1942 and often a very frustrating one at first. I remember how hard it was to actually hit something in BF2 the first times I played it and how many shots it took..

I tried BF2142, but I was put off. Maybe because of the map I was playing (Fall of Berlin). Then again, I haven't given it much of a chance...
