The problem with bf2 is it allows any and all players access to everything, which in it's own right is both good and bad. If no one applies for commander then private n00b Mcn00berton applies and gets it and doesn't know the first thing about it and is an idiot in terms of commanding. I honestly believe there should be licenses to be taken that "qualify" you to use xxx equipment or position.

Re: Can I get a Commander Here???

I haven't been around as long as many here. But I've been around, gotten some promotions (Staff Sarg is very close) and got the feel of the game so far. The Commanders badge was the last one I went for, usually prefering to yield to superior rank and experiance. But I mostly see the the better commanders staying put, hidden, and using their abitlity's to the utmost.
Having only played the Commander role a few times, about 8-9 hrs worth, I notice that the Commander is much more effective if Squad leaders actually call out for supply drops, etc. But many times, a squad leader is in a aircraft as well which sometimes require a lot of attention while flying, making it difficult to effectivly manage a squad.
And the opinion of some players is that a Commander should be leading assaults personally, rather than being in one place. Maybe I've just not yet experianced enough to be running around in a tank or chopper while doing supply drops, lobbing artillery, etc. while defending against enemy air attack, directing mutiple squads and spotting enemy players with scans and UAV.
          But yet, as an example:
I played once as commander after logging on, be placed automaticly on the team that was down, discovering there was no commander, applied and was accepted. No UAV, No SAT scan, and arty already "condition red".
          Great.
Came in as engineer and tried to get back to the area, now an enemy flag, and restore and recapture.
Scouted area, killed 2 bad guys, got killed and had to respawn...
dropped some supplies on the arty, and managed work my way back to fix the UAV trailer to to get a scan over the nearby flag, spoted it clear and just as I'm moving to recapture, get a <TEAM> message from a server admin, no less, demanding I resign or be kicked! I asked why, what had I done, was told "not doing a good job commanding".
Considering what I came into with the job...wtf was I supposed to do.
I resigned and then recapped the flag.
And the most ironic thing, earlier, on the same server, I was deliberatly teamkilled, twice, for "just sitting in one spot" "now get out there and do a proper job".
Just make 'em all happy all the time, I guess.
IMOHPO, Commanders do a better job when they have more time to spend in the Command Map screen, not worrying about driving, flying or even taking flags. And just sitting in a valuable tank, APC or just about anything but maybe a jeep, simply undermines the effectivness of the team as a whole. Those should be deployed, not sitting idle so a Commander can clock some time in a tank.
Defending a position is one thing, but even it seems to always be going on while 3 different squad leaders are requesting assitance while you're trying get a clean shot or fighting with bad guys, meaning they get all pissy because you don't reply or help right away...:hmm:
It's not as easy a job as some may think.
Many don't squad up and having Squads leaders helping the commander helps the team, it's not just always up to the commanders to figure out what's best by himself.
It's all about teamwork, not a pack of lone wolves.
And killing the other guy of course...
          Just IMO...

Re: Can I get a Commander Here???

            My 2 cents.

I find commanders (for the most part in my experience) adequate. There are those who are completely worthless too. Commanders who get the position and do absolutely nothing, i.e. take a dump, go to the store for smokes, etc. are the second worst. If DICE had used a braincell when implementing this "feature", they would have programmed it so that you have to "actively" use assets, supply/vehicle drops, etc. in order to keep your points. Being a 2 star, I could literally get command 99% of the time, and do nothing to earn points.

The worst commanders are those who actively try to hurt their own team by denying all requests, artying his own troops, destroying his own armor, etc. It's very rare to be able to kick vote those types anyway.

I have no problems if a commander can actively command and fight at the same time. But if he is sitting in a tank in the U/C main, commanding from there, I think he is denying his team that armor, and hindering them.

However, if the server rules say it is against their rules, then you should abide by them, as long as they are IAW the ROE.

Yeah, I revived this thread because I'm sick of all the totally awesome, uber leet commanders I've seen recently. Seriously.... Equate it to volunteering at a soup kitchen. Commander is a voluntary position as well.
You don't go to the soup kitchen and not serve soup (i.e. not supply your team with info. like UAV, spotting and objectives).
You don't go to a soup kitchen and eat all the soup (i.e. using command position to your advantage by dropping cars or supplies for yourself, or spotting infantry only you will kill).
You don't go to a soup kitchen and do pointless tasks like mopping the floor or painting the walls (i.e. Rambo-style commanding).

Ugh, I just wish I could make every ****ty commander read the info. about commanding. It seems like 90% of the time they are clueless as to what a commander does other than earn 2x for a win.... ****ers

If anybody has a problem with my style of commanding (Flag Capping + Commanding), I just resign.

Let them do it themselves, the useless wa-nks.

commanders can command and do other things at the same time its not like you have to be in the Hud all the time to command efficently. but being in a jet or helo is not good for the team since it takes away an asset from the team although a commander that is gunning for a Attack chopper can be helpfull. or if he is gunnning from the bomber jet.

Sure commanders can command and do other things, but by doing so they're doing a much poorer job than they could if they stayed in the command screen the entire time. Of course I'm assuming that the commander actually KNOWS what they're doing in the position. If anyone is considering being commander and has not read Bird Killer's excellent guide to Commander - please do so.

The commander's Scan and UAV recharge roughly every 30 seconds. Supplies and arty recharge in 1 minute. A good commander will have the Scan and UAV going constantly. First Scan to see where the UAV should be placed based on concentration of your forces, enemy forces, and the tactical situation the scan shows you. Next, spot enemies that are in threatening positions that are NOT under where you placed the UAV. These could be in secondary battle locations or enemy attempting to spawn kill in back locations, steal friendly vehicles or destroy commander assets. Next note where friendly armor is on the map. If you have no requests from Squad Leaders for supplies, drop your Supply crates near (preferably to the rear) of your armor. What about Arty? Does the tactical situation dictate its use? Remember that there is a delay of about 15 seconds from the time you place the arty to when it impacts. Consequently, place Arty where you believe enemy (and no/few friendlies) will be that amount of time in the future. What about orders? Are your squads bunching up? Do you see on your Scan that enemy are moving to the back bases? Issue a Defend order to the nearest Squad Leader. Do you see enemy bases that are undefended? Issue an Attack order to the nearest SL.

This cycle goes on constantly. To stay on top of the situation and utilize the CO tools to their maximum potential to help their team, the CO needs to be doing their job 100% of the time.

Re: Can I get a Commander Here???

my style of commanding is a non offensive way

if my team has an Uncap then i'll sit in a transport vehicle as eng. this allows me to quickly cap flags that my team dont respond to even after i spot like hell (e.g. Hotel on kark when you've pushed them back over the river), then its back to the uncap. or i can sit in the command screen while next to the assest to repair and command.

if i dont have an uncap then i'll sit in an area to defend a key point (suburb on kark, airfield on wake/jubra etc) this allows me to defend my teams assests helping htem keep airbourne or stop the enme from flanking, this usually consists of planting C4 in usual flag camping spots.

when i'm not commanding what pains me most is to see the people that command while running on the front by themselves, as sniper clay spamming using all the assests to resupply and spot for themselves

my opinion on this is would you rather have a commander who is commanding while commiting one of those sins or no commander at all? often times ill play as commander and if i see theres noone in the armor ill sit in it just to rack up time. if someone asked me to get out i would. if an admin threatens to kick me id arty my own team TK the admin and then leave(actually i do that WHENEVER an admin threatens to kick me for anything). the thing that drives me nuts is when people say absolutely NOTHING to the commander, no requests, no criticism or suggestions. but then notice that the commander is in a tank and then OMZ COMM SUX HE NOT COMANDIN JUST CAMP IN OUR ARMOR. and then start the vote kicks/ admin kicks. and why? b/c the commander walked up next to a tank and pressed "e". noone asked him to get out so they could use it. people take the server rules thing way too far. they seem to have forgotten the point of playing- having fun. just loosen up a bit. so what if the commander is doing a poor job of commanding or is using armor? if thats then case guess what? youre back in 1942 or vietnam when we didnt have commanders. deal with the situation. dont whine and try to kick the commander.

Glad you missed the point. It's a voluntary position. You don't volunteer for something at which you suck, or do nothing at all...
If some douche resigns, I will gladly take over the commander position.

FYI, this isn't Bf42. You could name any game with no "commander"-like position. The fact is, in this game, it's a role to be filled and utilized. Most times, it isn't utilized.

I enjoy commanding and for the most part squads do what they want but when you get squads who know you've sent them to an area with little resistance and they go on to cap the flag its reassuring to hear the 'thank you' being spammed.

The only time I've been mightily hacked off is when I was SAS commanding Warlord and we only had the TV left which was overrun with enemy, and noone could/would make a break for it so I made my way to the outside of the map towards the Mosque and capped the flag. During which time we had lost the TV station. My team spread out and they started making inroads and as I get to my comfy spot in the uncapped I get kicked for taking flag!!

If it wasn't for me taking the Mosque the SAS would have been raped leaving the uncapped. So even if you cap for the good of the team you can still be kicked.

If the commander doesn't constantly have the UAV over his head with supplies landing next to him I don't care what he does but his 'job' is to command the team first and foremost.

More than 6 or 7 per scan gets annoying usually!

I'll scan, and mostly spot enemies along the flanks or who are heading to some rear CP's.
That seems like a smart atittude and it's the one I take.

I also spot enemy aircraft every chance i get. Those suckers... you gotta know when they're heading towards you!!
