It took me what, 10 minutes and one readthrough of |CBW|Simon's excellent command guide here and then I had figured out how to be an effective commander. Calculating arty is still tricky but spotting is so basic it's a wonder people don't get it. Perhaps they just don't bother cause it they'll just get command point no matter what they do.

Worst part is when you get knifed by teammates telling you to shut up when you're doing your job and informing them where the enemy is so they won't get ambushed. :|:

Yeah, I often wonder what is considered "excessive spotting". I'll scan, and mostly spot enemies along the flanks or who are heading to some rear CP's.

Sometimes when the UAV is recharging or is destroyed, I'll try to spot a few guys who are on the edges of a large formation. This limits "enemy spotted" spamming, but gives the squads a heads up as to where the enemy is, even if it doesn't show it's true strength.

Doing this, I've yet to hear a complaint about excessive spotting.

I was doing a perfect commanding job. Then the stupid team mutinys me off because I was spotting people for squads they whine and complain because the radio spam. Ill never command again

The only time I command and fight, is in a lightly populated server, and I normally stay back and defend flags, while in command screen, while the others go out. Still though, I was playing on a 64 player server that was nearly empty ( was about 6 in the morning) and I got in a tank as commander, no one complained on either team, and I had a lot of fun, and really helped the team to the win, I honestly do not think we would have won if I had just commanded that round.

Well I have seen tons of ROE rules broken and it didn't bother me none because the person doing it was just causing chaos for his team. Otherwise I do find it very annoying when the cammander spots everyone at once :evil:

There will always be mutinys. It's just that someone else wanted command. You will never do things to where everyone is happy either.

I wrote a paper on command theory and points specifically because a commander can really take the game to another level if he has squads that are listening. It doesn't take many either. One great squad can make a difference. Two good squads or a helo pilot squad leader are also excellent. With that, I tend to keep in command mode and protect a rear asset. I don't like to kill or do anything that will keep one of my guys from getting a point. When I am capping a flag (if it comes to that) and someone else runs up, I will leave the cap area and come back so they get the capture 2 points and I just assist in the speed of it.

I will steal an enemy attack chopper and sit in it till I can hand it off to a pilot on my side, just to deny it's use to the enemy. I won't fly around in it but I will fly it to safety.

I will sit in Armor as gunner till someone comes to claim it as I have seen too many tanks get stolen then used against me in the spawn.

I will fight if my side is losing or if I see an easy flag opportunity that no one is responding to.

It all depends on the situation, but constantly running the UAV and keeping people abreast of spots in their area and supplies to the tanks and intelligence to the squad leaders of troop movements are my number one job as commander. My duty is to survive and deny the use of any assets to the enemy whilst protecting my own.

with all that in mind, what do I get yelled at for?

On gator:
Squad Leader"Hey jack---, run the ------- artillery on the ship already!!"
me: "There is no artillery on Gator"
Squad Leader"You ----!! Run the artillery now!!!"

You will almost never command a completely happy side of guys. Thats just the way it is.

Edit Add: As to spotting. Spot the local ones but don't forget to use the command voice key to all squad leaders or the select voice key to selected squad leaders so you can just give them a heads up. If they then ask "where" do the spot. If someone complains about your spotting, they don't have to be squad leader. I try not to do more than four spots in an immediate run. I will constantly spot the enemy chopper or mobile AA if I'm on the horn with MY chopper and know the pilot has a TV man ready to deal with it.

It should be situational. There are some commanders, like all human beings, that can not drive and talk on a cellphone at the same time. But there are people that can legitimately run a corporation of 50,000 people because they have superior management skills.

An excellent commander will understand all the tools available to him to expedite his usefulness for the players scattered throughout the field. The active commander will know the Commander Comm-Rose key [E] and be proactive with the two VOIP keys available ( [C] & [V] ). Always calling out for people's needs and asking for reports from the eyes in the field (SL's).

There is nothing wrong with a commander that can run and gun well. If this was not the case, DiCE would have coded Commander Option to be a God like presence not on the field and after a several patches would have made game modifications so that a commander could not even be a passenger in an APC.

The experienced fighting commander would pick a kit that will allow him the most flexibly on the field (namely Assault). This allows them to stay alive even after two sniper hits, and lay out a couple enemy soldiers behind the lines. A dead commander is little value to anyone on his team.

But, I am not endorsing here that a commander be actively taking flags at the front lines. I am more suggesting that he is moving discreetly behind the secured areas and taking combat situations where he is not overwhelmed. Which is a similar judgment to how a sniper should behave.

I am a rather experienced player that will change my hat depending on what the roll is that I am filling. Each roll/kit in BF has their own respective places, like Snipers and Spec-Ops are not geared to be in the front lines, nor should a commander. But you can be an active member on the battlefield without having to use shameless arty to make your ends meet.

Sadly, I feel that most of the children that come into this game affect the opinion of what players’ limitations are. A 14 year old might not have the ability to function in this capacity. It is not right to make a general-blanket statement that no commander should ever leave their bunker out in BFE.

It is a server optional rule, and saying people should be auto-kick is a shame, before you can reasonably see the effectiveness of the commander in action.

I personally have been on the receiving end of mutinies that have only garnered 3 votes. While the 28 players and squad leaders did not have a problem with the way I handled the environment. Those few that have tried to vote me out of Commander when I had 20 kills under my belt, more then the helo pilots could not understand that I was still a very, very effective commander...satisfying the needs of squad leaders with supplies and prompt UAV coverage at a moments asking. Those players that wish for a mutiny were not Squad Leaders that I was communicating with directly through VOIP, nor could they see me pulling up my map screen [N] ever few seconds to see where the movements of my teams’ squads were. The people that asked for a vote kick would never realize that I would not place a UAV directly on top of them, but in a position that it was effective for them and other players at flags with-in range.

I will counter that peoples statements about ineffective commanders comes mostly from children that take jets and never once deploy a UAV. There are more possibilities out there for commanders to be effective. Believe me, I have lived in both worlds, and it is not an obscure fantasy. But, the commander that runs and guns needs to be quick with the kills and fast at the request responses.

I forgot that some of the children described by RocketChild are under the impression that they get all the points they make and THEN get the times 2 bonus as well. They don't realize that a commander doesn't get points for his kills.

If you are a good player, I think it important that you help reduce the other teams tickets. That said, I would never suggest a commander going into meat grinders with his squads in tow.

Many people dont take a good commander for grantit, idk why they think going on a killing spree is worth-it, cuz you dont get "points" for kills and your putting the I in team...when there is none

Well, it is already an *Optional* ROE rule. After reading through it, I don't think it is a specific policy.
