It's not even just the stat whores, but everything that encompasses their existence. People whining over and over have lead to changes that have made the game less fun. There are a ton of awesome maps out there, but they can't be played ranked, so people don't want to play them, so that they can run around spamming claymores, or with a knife out to get some stupid badge, or a better K/D because they actually suck at the game, but want to pump up the ol' ePenis. I mean jeez, POE2, USI, PRMM and a couple other mods are great fun, but practically dead. Hell the CAL POE2 league only has what 17-18 teams? And the support? laughable. Each patch brought bug after bug, one almost making the game unplayable, and it took what, four months to get a "fix". Sad as it is BF2 is STILL the best modern day fps out there.

I believe if EF, and AF had been free they alone would have helped revitalize this game, but not everyone wanted to buy them, so interest and servers dwindled.

They CAN be fast rounds, or you can sit and in spectator a watch two campers not moving. CS "kits" are practically the same, the balance issue isn't nearly as big an issue as it has to be in bf2. There's no tanks, so no AT, you can't revive, so no medics, there's no assets, or commander...hello apple, this is orange, how are ya?

The SF inside the Vanilla interface is a really good idea, seeing as everytime I try to switch to the SF interface it crashes and I can't even play. So that would definitely make a lot of people happy and definitely lead to more people playing SF.

This change would unify the game as a whole and overall make it more solid if they did it right.

              1. You can go into the server, frag for your own fun and leave and the game is pure 100% raw fun with no brain activity involved. BF2 is like a work, if you want to have any kind of fun there.

              2. Publicity, hype around CS is so high that people play it even when they dont like it.
              true that

cs also for me takes like 5 seconds to load, and like u tend to remember ppl u play with if u stick to the same server and like sometimes theyre like " hey conscript". bf2 on the other hand takes some time to load esp if u play on a server with map rotation, and ivebeen playing in this same server for a while and i dont remember any one i played with

Re: So why isnt BF2 more popular?

Back in those days, my folks could easily run CS in a very low spec computer. 50% of my cousins had computers that could run CS great. Now, when Bf2 came, I'm the only one left with enough juice to run the game. The rest of my freinds, neighbors, could never run BF2 even on the lowest settings. This game is for the wealthy or at least live in rich countries where people could easily afford fast computers. That leaves me the only guy in our community that plays BF2 (freako!)

Remember that MUCH greater percentage of gamers around the world would never afford to buy computer that is the recommended specs for BF2. CS was able to satisfy that demand, it became the FPS for the masses, so no wonder... If you want your games to be popular, make sure it will run(nicely) on low spec computers.

I'm pretty sure (citing another example) FSX will be a lot less popular than fs9 due to hefty requirements.

Next thing I read is news about a patch even before the game is released..
Yes, EA/DICE missed Programming 101. Where you learn how to search and sort a list, and display it with the proper filters. They haven't even figured out how to search a database of servers and display it properly as the user wishes it. Pathetic.

BF2's minimum requirements are very low spec.

What you're talking about are obselete computers that're 7 or 8 years old, running on a Pentium 3 Processor.

                      P4 3.0
                      512MB RAM
                      ATI R 9600

Running all on low when playing infantry, effects and geometry on high when airbourne. They arent really that low specs. 20- 30 FPS is playable for me, but a nightmare for most.

Wow, I didn't think BF2's minimum specs were that low. That was probably the top of the line back in 03'... It's still playable, but I'm betting that, thats a bargain basement computer from Dell these days. $500 max. Crappy monitor included.

Medium end to me would look a little more like this:

                        Antec - Sonata II Case
Asus V8N series Motherboard, (Only 1 AGP or PCI-E slot. Not SLi Compatible.)
AMD Athlon 64 2500+, (Can be overclocked to run like a 3200+.)
                        eVGA GeForce 6600GT (AGP or PCI-E) (128mb or 256mb),
                        1GB Corsair/Kingston DDR (PCI 2700 333mhz or PCI 3200 400mhz) (2 x 512mb or 1 x 1gb) RAM.

You could probably buy all the aforementioned parts seperately for about $550 US. You could probably put that together with your old computer's, Hard Drive, Floppy Drive, and CD/DVD-R Drive, and use your old computer's Monitor without any hitches, although you might also want to throw in an extra $80 for a cheap heatsink and a couple of fans if you plan to overclock it.

Voila, there you have it, for less than a PS3, you have a medium end computer that could run BF2 on high settings without any issues. You could probably also play Doom 3 and Oblivion without any problems as well.

The problem I have convincing friends to get a BF2 worthy computer, is these are people that do not use their computer primarily for gaming. They do their gaming on consoles. A lot of them have computers 3+ years old, which is fine for browsing and running Office apps, but obviously not spec'd enough for games.

Your complaint is valid, but it's not BF2's, Electronic Arts', nor DICE's fault.

To lure PC gamers to a new game from an old game, high end graphics are required. Unfortunately high end graphics are in itself a niche for computer gamers.

My guess is, the reason why there are so many new players coming to BF2 NOW, is because the 'high end hardware of 2005' required to play BF2 at it's best, has literally been slashed to 1/3rd of it's original price. This opens BF2 to the market of the Bargain Basement Buyers.

BF2 will never die for another 10 years for that exact reason, as there will always be people who are unwilling to upgrade their computers to keep up with technology. They will play BF2, because BF3 (2142 is pretty much BF:Vietnam, so it doesn't count as BF3) requires specs that are too high for their liking.

Re: So why isnt BF2 more popular?

yeah, i'd have to say the "not enough juice" argument is outdated. perhaps it held things back in the beginning, butas Dairuka indicates <$600 can get you a decent performing machine to get it accomplished at medium settings and 50+ fps.

i think BF2's biggest hold up for most overall is it's complexity. whoever said CS has a big learning curve is down right silly. it's nothing compared to BF2.

also CS has the players now. 150K+ on average or something between CS and CS:S. whereas BF2 is something like ~15-20K. people are simply attracted to whatever is most popular. take Paris Hilton for example. what a stupid slvt that isn't really all that hot, but everyone LOVES reading about/watching her. sheer popularity is hard to overcome.

but all this aside, i'm kind of glad. all the newer stupid 12 year old freaks migrate to CS for their first FPS gaming experiences. i've got a theory that CS helps to weed out the losers for the most part. have you guys every noticed that CS servers tend to really be packed with idiots? i mean, not the "i'm new to BF2 so i don't understand what punishing is" type of idiot, i mean down right inept morons play CS.

i'm thankful i don't like CS and the majority of the rest of the world does. it allows me to enjoy my BF2 game a lot more.

I think you're probably right, as already a couple mates have picked up new computers this past year, and today's 'average' new PC can play at least at a low or medium graphics quality.

It was not my thinking that it was EA's fault for this, it was just that back in 2005 the hardware requirements were steep, but like you say as long as there are servers available people will come on board because the same hardware is much cheaper today. And the price of the game has already dropped considerably in the stores as well.
