Re: Heli go up or down?

being in a bad position already lost a battle for u. flying low makes u cant see jack, vulnerable to other choppers and jets, and give u 2 options if beeing locked on, crash in water or blow up from the missile, same thing goes for tvs, help urself help urself... fly high and give urself max advantage.atleast fair advantage.

I usually only go low when im running from something. Ill go as low as I can and duck in and out of buildings and trees. Its also very useful for bypassing a tricky player who likes to ambush you with AA everytime you pass by when you arent expecting it.

I feel like a total jackass when I crash while flying low for no reason with a gunner in the heli though. So for just normal play no I dont usually fly low. It makes your heli almost useless. Your gunner cant do much and your screwed if you need to use the hellfires on something.

I can't tell you how many people I've seen spell it that way intentionally.

It all depends on the situation. All you little kids are the one's thinking that it is done to scare the gunner. First of there's nothing to be scare of "IT'S A GAME" and second i'll fly however i want, as long as my gunner is getting kills.

Tanks? It's so statistically improbable for them to actually hit a good pilot flying low that I don't even consider it a variable in my calculations: besides, they're usually long gone by the time I use the terrain.
              i don't really fly helis at all, but I can safely say that the lower you fly, the easier you are to get hit by a tank.. bunch of reasons ;

              - it's much harder to judge your speed, heading and distance when you're far apart from horizon - much harder to calculate lead and shell arc. If you're close to world geometry, tanker has a reference point.

              - some maps (esp. dragon valley) make your crosshairs vanish when you point at sky.

              - barrel obviously has limitations to its elevation

              - it's harder to break line of sight (/find cover) as a tank when you're about to get shot with a tvgm or bunch of rockets

              - you're somewhat more predictable - in open sky, you can change yaw pitch and roll freely any time, but at low altitude, buildings/terrain limit your choices.

last one is a bit far-fetched, but generally, it's always easier to hit a low flying chopper as a tank (well, most apply to at rockets and 50cals as well to some extent)

I have many hours of experience, so what I'm writing here carries a lot of weight: trust me, tanks are a non-issue when you're flying low. It's so rare that something like this will happen that you might as well not even bother thinking about it.

now, I'm not saying you're wrong or anything. Actually I DO trust you in that you get hit less by tanks while flying low.. but I also think it has lots to do with you doing the flying, instead of the altitude. Your flying style probably gets you hit less, and that style just happens to include flying low .. it probably also includes loads of other stuff ranging from how you approach your tanks, how you maneuver from place a to b, map choices and whatnot.

What I'm saying is that if I'm driving a tank, and I have an opportunity to shoot at an attack chopper, that shot is easier if it's flying low than high.. and if I take a sample from last 100 choppers I've either shot down or gotten shot by, ones that were higher ended up killing me rather than other way around. Sure, I've gotten killed by low flying ones, and killed high flying ones, but generally, out of bunch of pilots I've played cat&mouse with, the higher they flew, the greater success rate they had.

Remember, there's craploads of people that fly attack choppers in BF2 every day, and if most of them just change their general flying altitude, they end up getting hit more, since they don't have the required prerequisites of experience and indepth knowledge of maps and the game.

As attack helo I fly high to mid and low in the valley and pop up and hit ground targets then duck back down if there is a lot of jets...blowing them out of the sky is more fun though lol.

thats exactly what I hate, when the pilot of the trans heli is flying so low that when you hear the alarm goin off and you know chopper is gonna blow...........you dont have enough distance to open chute, and your going to fast to just hit the ground running when you jump

I personally like when the pilot takes the high road, when I jump out I got time to freefall straight to the flag or pull the chute and guide myself in

as far as attack heli, however high you need to be to be able to make a shot, as long as he keeps the nose up where I see more than just water

I usally go low cause going to 200 alt takes to long even though you might die at about 50 alt i still would goto 200 alt unless i was going to some far away place on wake like the airfield to the carrier.
