Then the person would have a better understanding of the game before he steps foot in a jet/helo. Just a thought. I know I didnt try to fly on a populated server until I had about 30K points, thats when I felt that practicing on an empty server was enough, I felt I wasnt (and still not) good enough and I wanted to leave the flying up to the people that COULD.

Plus it might alleviate SOME of the TK'ing for aircraft.
This is a really difficult issue to balance fairly. On the one hand, everyone paid the same amount of money for the game and the expectation is that once you're in the game you have access to all of the vehicels.

On the other hand, ranked servers are meant for competitive players that want their team to win. A newer player that may not be a very good pilot can waste a jet/heli for a significant portion of the round and cause their team to lose.

To strike a balance, I believe that in unranked servers there should be no restrictions on vehicle use. For ranked servers though, I do like the idea of requiring some type of simulated test of competancy. For example, a player may be required to get into a jet, take off, shoot down a CPU controlled jet, bomb a CPU controlled tank, fly through a series of rings, and land the jet back at the airstrip within a set period of time. When this is accomplished the player is then allowed unrestricted access to any jet on any map. Similar "tests" could be thought up for helicopters/tanks. (My thought process here is that these are all limited strategic resources which all have the capacity to dramatically alter the outcome of a game)

Once in an air craft you are no longer a medic or what ever, you would instantly change over to pilot class. If you bail out you would revert to the medic or what ever class. Thats my thoughts any way. . . . . . . . .Red
What would be the point of writing code that converts you, then reverts you, and has basically no real effect on anything?

this game is not real life, the ranks and points are there for fun.

its a arcade game,we dont need to go in to a debate on what realistic in bf2(been there read that)

just enjoy youre game, and dont get frustrated if you cant get the heli/plane even if you think/know you can do better.

everyone has the right to get in the plane skilled or unskilled(its public servers)

if you or anyone still takes being good at flying seriously then maybe get in a good clan as a pilot and play some clan games,

        just a thought nothing more.

now if bf2 was a proper realism game then maybe a traning offline mission(similar to america's army)

where you have to pass all training to open up extra parts of the game in multi player.

i would be all for that, but i dont think bf2's arcade style goes with it.
        Kudos

        Exactly.

I always just applied this logic to geting a plane/heli in game.

Decide you want it, choose the appropriate kit (medic is best, fast sprint/longer sprint - better chance of getting to if off the start of the round), if you get it, take off, try not to tk any douche in the process, if you dont get it get a boat/vehicle and continue playing.

Also, if I typically get it at the start of the round, I'll go baqck for it for the rest of the round, because 1) no one else often is there waiting for it and it shoudl be used to help your side win the map, 2) when I get an opportunity to fly uncontested (by TKers etc) I'll take it.

On the other hand, if people are being just gay on the runway or helipad, its really just best to leave it and go on foot, hey.

Flying is not hard, either. Practice a couple of hours in an empty server and you'll do just fine. That's how I started. I have less than 12h in a jet and I can hold my own. Not that I'm an expert or something…
The point I am trying to make is that all vehicles should be available for everyone and you are supposed to have the knowledge of how to use it.
It's the same with every resource in the game: there will always be someone better than you. So what? Does it mean you shouldn't use it?! NO. Where would be the fun then?
Having to earn a license could be a nice way to prove your skills, but implementing this change in software is not an easy task. I don't think this is ever going to see the light.

This has been suggested a few times, although it'll never happen I think it's fair enough. I'm a dreadful flyer myself, not bad in attack helis but I never really go near anything airbourne. If there was some kind of training and license acquisition I'd actually find that quite fun and useful.

Evryone has a right to the vehicles no matter what your rank..period. I really hate the elitist attitude in this game. I' better at it and can help my team more so its mine! Bullsh!T!!!! I play this game to satisfy one thing...my entertainment and if that means I fly...then I fly and not anyone is gonna change that. I dont give a damn how good they think they are. You guys who say it is better for the team...again bullsh!t!!! You could careless about the team. Your only care is how many kills you can rack up.

Uhh Right, I was referring to the Real military. Not the game buddy. There's a huge margin between being a qualified Humvee operator in contrast to a freaking Jet pilot, IRL.

Thats an interesting idea, but not feasable.

The servers for BF2 in general are administered like crap. In DC you would get kicked quickly for wasting aircraft, TKing, and the like.

BF2 is a free for all, and the admins just enjoy the title, for the most part.

Why should he? Elitists are complete gob****es, I'll never bother getting used to them.

I see your point orphius, but sometimes it really does help having someone in the air who can take down enemy air threats, or at least destract them, for the good of the team on the ground. I hate jerks who do nothing more than lay claim to the jets/helis at the start of each round, force tking and all that. I think a training session (or maybe a few) and a license acquisition system would be beneficial for noob pilots though. Most BF2 players first took to the sky's by flying into a moutain/sea, which doesn't really aid anyone. Now if you could log on to a single player training programme, having that gruff sounding guy (as annoying as his voice is after reinstalling the game. Press. the left mouse button. to fire.) talking you through the basics and providing you with a series of objectives, that'd probably be quite handy.

It's a fact of life that everyone is elitist in one way or another, even if only on a subconscious level. "That we hold that all men are created equal." doesn't quite mean what you think it does: get used to quantification, stratification and classification because regardless of how you feel, it will surround and affect you...

And what do you presume I think it means? I generally dislike blatent snobbery in all walks of life, contrary to whether that goes in the face of human nature. Those three things you described there are prevelent in everyone at a subtle level, I agree, but it's still no excuse to go around with your head up your arse.

Incidentally, I'm 21, drop the condescending tone.

BF2 JUST came out today, everyone starts from 0, then EVERYONE would have to go thru the "probation" period per say before getting to fly........
if your like me and didnt get the game until its been out for a year and a half then tough **** your behind, and guess what you got to go thru the probation period just like everyone else did then it is something else to look forward to....like another unlock

That's how I look at it as well. People go for their licenses when they are of age: until then, motor vehicles are off-limits. I see nothing wrong with that...
