OK, that almost sounds reasonable, BUT, then you go on to explain that there is indeed additional information being taken -

.............the information and ads in game are the only things looked at, no other information is taken from your computer and browser, they just look at which ads in-game are viewed, for how long and at what angle.
All of that makes me a happier camper.......

After playing the demo, I'm pretty sure I wont buy it, it's alright, but I doesn't excite me!

What are your thoughts on it all?

It's boring. It's just BF2 with new skins and textures. So no, I won't be buying it, unless it hits the bargain bin at about $15, then I'll try it out.

So how is that different from when you log in to bf2 and go into a server, your ip is "tracked/recorded", or how about when you log into these forums, your ip is released as well.

This isn't anything really new and I think that the whole thing got blown out of proportion. The software that runs in game to see what ads viewed/for how long/what angle is only active when the game is running and the only reason they're looking at your ip is to ensure the right people get the right ads (people in UK do not get US ads and so forth).

Well, I for one run Mozilla and use every single ad-blocking plug-in I can get installed. Whether it is a script blocker, Flash blocker, or a string like */ad?/*. I do not like anything that is hard for me to control. Those little banners that have some goofy java that follows your movements and cookies, I can't stand them and I do not trust them. I don't believe they have my best interests and I find ways to block them.

For this software, I would find ways to fool it into thinking it has the right information coming from its parent server, but it is just getting scrubbed textures. Again, I don't like intrusion and I try to keep it as minimal as possible.

Now, if some of these banners were to something like Redlight.com or Evil Angel, well hey, that would defiantly spice of the ads now wouldn't it?

I'm the same way, I run a lot of adaware blockers, spyware blockers and the like...that kind of thing really pisses me off. Fact is, most of those do track your movements, among other things, and use that information to sell to companies to spam you with whatever.

There is already talk of on how to block the game from accessing your ip but it's kind of a catch 22 since you have to release your ip to connect to a server. But if iga or ea were to use ANY of this information in a inappropriate manner there would be hell to pay, much like how microsoft has to access your machine to give you the appropriate updates, their system HAS to be on lock.

There are ways to hide your IP in the TCP stack. One of the cool benefits in the KillerNic is the ability to obscure your IP. Seems like a strange thing to do, when you are a network admin, but it is a great way to help protect yourself.

I just am not clear on the reports coming out of some sites noting how it goes through your browser cache. I don't like the idea of disk access. I am wonderin how Vista is going to like this kind of action. Best thing is just to block the stuff at the firewall...until they make it so you can't join ranked servers without having an open ad-stream.

This whole advertising thing is getting out of hand. Have you heard about the DRM rules and laws that have come up for review with Congress and the FCC? The entertainment industry would like to make it so you can't change channels when commercials come on. Can you believe that!!! They are already crippling DVRs so you can't get around ads. They have already started to gimp DVDs so you can't get around the ads at the beginning of videos. It all is a slippery slope, and we are approaching the edge now with gaming.

Just think of what it would be like if you paid for a WoW subscription, and Blizzard decided that they might just add a couple advertisements into the game. I am sure someone like EA would not hesitate to do such a thing!

You're certainly right about them tracking my playing info for purposes of rank and awards. That's cool, I think most of us LIKE that part.

But the key word in this discussion is "ad", as in "advertising". They want me to pay full price for a game and then agree to allowing them to track my info (who knows how much?) AND insert ads into the game as I play!

That's obscene, disgusting and vile, IMO. Makes me wanna puke.

As stated, all this DRM crap and adware is really frustrating and annoying the consumer. Is it any wonder people go out and pirate?

ill never say never, but i shouldnt think so, i have too much interest in this bf2 and am a fan of contemporary, ww* games - plus i want to concentrate on progressing up the ranks in this game rather than spread myself thin with another. itll be interesting in hindsight in a year or two to see which of dices releases in the bf2 franchise was there golden ticket, my bet is with BF2.

Ok so heres my expiriance so far, I pre-order from Gamestop so I can get one of those keys with the unlock, I get there and the keys are locked in a draw that a key broke off in (how ironic) = I get no key.

I go to open up my account to get the vet. promotion after reserving my name and I cannot access my account. The reason you ask? Well Since BF2142 won't let you use a "$" in your name I had to create a new name and account when registering for the vet. program and now the new name is not retrievable and says its already in use. It conflicts with my EA downloader account so no dice either way.

I knew going in I was only purchasing it to have "another BF option" and be able to play the mods, First Strike in particular.

I know there are a number of bright individuals on this board, but I have seen some pretty stupid replies to this thread. Did anyone bother to read past the headlines and find out what this "spyware" does?

-No outside process, it's built into BF2142.
-It only runs when the game is running and online.
-It doesn't scan your browser cache or any other files on your HD.
-The only data is collects is your IP address to see which geographic reagion you are in and what ads were in your field of view on screen and for how long.

Do you honestly think EA wants to be the next "Sony Rootkit?"

The game IS built on the BF2 engine, so it does share many similarities, but it is a different game, more so then BFV vs. 1942. The demo is a steaming pile of dung compared to the full game. They used one of the worst maps and don't allow any unlocks.

I'm sorry if I've come off sounding like a fan boy, but I have to wonder at all the folks who post these ignorant one-liners about "spyware" and "It's a mod." The game is fun and something different from BF2, which had gotten kind of stale of late for me. Obviously not everyone is going to like it, but please don't ignorantly bash it because everyone else is.

2142 is refered to being a 'mod' as its still BF2 engine but with different content and more pretty graphics, but it also has some of the same bugs,

the spyware bit; well atleast its not as bad as the slip up Apple made, not noticing they had trojan horse virus's in their ipods lol

I think that the "advertising thing" got out of hand a long time ago. Luckily I live in a newly developed/developing country and it hasn't hit us that hard yet, however in many major western cities all thinkable spaces have already been covered with the advertising clutter and the advertisers have no way of standing out. What disgusted me the most was advertisers going for schools (this has already happened here): building, text books and workbooks. I guess advertisements in gaming was the next step for them but thusfar not many have been willing to pay the full price for being in a game. So now EA has met the advertisers half-way and turned games into television where you can purchase ads for certain periods, get very precise information about the hits and decide wether to go for primetime or not.

I know that TV turns peoples' brain into an all-consuming organ in terms of everything coming from there goes straight into the subconscious (the brain switches to alpha waves that is also the pre-sleep condition where people are extremely susceptible). I wonder if the PC-screen and gaming has the same effect? I know from my personal experience that you switch off the rest of the world almost completely, so are you a prime target for the advertisers?

Will BF2142 be viewed as a turning point in online gaming history some time in the future? I hope not, but I'm afraid that it will be. What's next?

BF2142 is crap.

Put BF2, dumbed down gameplay mechanics, Tribes 2/Planetside and spyware in a blender and you've got 2142.

That game is worth nothing past a cheap laugh slamming the transport in to the defenseless mechs.

I'm glad to see the general gaming community agrees with me too because BF2 still has over 200%-400% more players online (currently 20,000 in BF2 and 10,000 in BF2142) than 2142 at any given time and I believe after that number of people peaks within the next couple of weeks it will begin to gradually slump as people quickly get tired with the dumbed down/poorly balanced gameplay in 2142 and either leave that game or migrate back to BF2.
