I dabbled in MMORPG's for a while such as DAoC and WoW before regaining my sanity and coming back to the BF universe in BF2.

Anyway... all that to ask, What did "they" actually promise v.s. what expectation was heaped on them based on their relationship with the DC developers? What was in DC that isnt in BF2 that would make BF2 that much more "complete"?

Understand, I'm not asking to be a smartass, I honestly don't know and am curious. Because in its basic form, BF2 delivers that intense BF experience just as well as BF1942 did. What was DC that BF2 isnt?

    Thanks.

    Consultant,

BF2 was touted as having superior graphics, destructible environments, squad based team play, in game communication (VoIP), more modern weapons, more modern factions, more kit diversity, more interactive maps, basically a bigger, stronger, faster more fluid Desert Combat.

What we got was better graphics for folks with top of the line systems, a few destructible items, ability to form a squad where your team uses you as a mobile spawn point to launch lonewolf missions from, VoIP that sometimes works, modern weapons that don't really hit squat, the Chinese (PLA), basically the same kits but with more limitations than what we had in DC, smaller maps with fewer interactive statics, basically a bigger community, weaker gaming experience, much slower in many aspects and fluidity that is determined by map size, # of players, graphics settings, server size and a whole slew of other variables.

Don't get me wrong, I do really love playing BF2. Despite all of its warts, I have fun, but there will always be that part of me that feels like I was let down because BF2 did not live up to its advertising hype.

The part about paying for expacks/booster packs and the low number of maps and what not, I can understand all of that because BF2 is not a mod like DC was. BUT, when you do pay for new material, you usually don't have the patience for buggy products like you do when a mod hands out a new map pack or patch since those were always free.

Re: Why is this forums relationship with DICE/EA damaged?

I think the ranking system has generally made the game a bit like a package holiday where great clone armies march between coaches and tourist attractions before declaring that they know the local culture/ are l33t tourists. In the same spirit the ability to cope with problems encountered on the trip has been lost.
The older games were far more of an outback adventure where you could be your own man and do what you want to do without some spotty rep waking you in the morning to remind you the coach leaves in half an hour. If your car broke down someone would have fixed it rather than had a committee meeting to discuss how to open the bonnet or some form of inquest into a deseased gasket.

The community that exists in here represents the package holiday, governed by its schedual and can never deviate from it, they must get the points. They will never know the random humour of a mass knife fight in BF2, they are not allowed to, they can not stray from the path, doomed only to ever see a fraction of BF2.
I dont see that ranked players can therefore be of much help as they may have once been with regards to identifying and occasionally proposing fixes or providing fixes since they are so tied to the ROE as are most servers.
The ranked server owners arent even allowed to boycott a patch nor play with files, the uptake of any patch has to be close to 100% of active players which removes part of the communities power to make subtle hints to the developers when things are simply substandard.

It's the ranking system. That's why everyone hates EA/DiCE.

Take for instance POE2, everyone who plays POE2 loves the mod developer (and the mod), but you wait until POE2 goes Ranked, and watch what happens.

        Mark my words.

If one thing henders getting ranked up or unlocking something, the blame will be placed on whoever and whatever, and with much hatered.

It seems like 97% of ppl punish for TK in game. I never punish unless its an a-hole tk'ing for a vehicle. But its not just the punish feature, most people act like jerks even though you are supposed to be on their team. Won't pick you up when you need a ride, won't let you in their chopper, takes the bomber solo when two ppl are running towards it. etc. etc.

We probably see the same group of a-holes on the forums too. It's not just totalbf2 either, any forum about bf2 is full of them.

I like to think that these are just immature little kids, it is too much of a shame to think grown-ups act like ppl do here.
I do not experience these things in game as you have explained here lynx. I think this is because I have hardly ever ventured out and played public servers. I always play on our ranked server which has drawn a crowd of good adult players. Teamwork is very prevalent on our servers as well. I enjoy the game as it is, and so far with the 1.4 patch issues have been solved IMO.

On the other hand I feel the pain that is expressed is really due to the lack of communication by DICE/EA. They need to have a better grasp on the PR within these major communities like PBF and TBF2. They do not frequent here nor do they provide minor updates to what they are working on. When you lack communication it leaves too much to speculation and this is when the comments and decent get out of hand in all the forums related to BF2. There is no real EA/DICE presence in the forums. They may read them to understand the issues but its one way communication. This is the major difference between this game and others. EA is an extremely large company and BF2 is just a small piece of that. They lack the relationship within the forums. To work on this would really improve the community support and the bottom line within their organization. You need to communicate to your customers in a timely factual manor. Failing to do so results in these problems we are discussing here.

Re: Why is this forums relationship with DICE/EA damaged?

Nobody here has mentioned something that has really rankled me towards EA/DIce, and actually I am really surprised there hasn't been more about this on the forums in general. I do think it has had a HUGE impact on the BF2 population at large, and may be responsible for much of the negative feelings many feel.

IT HAS BEEN OBVIOUS TO ME THAT SINCE PATCH 1.2 WE AS A COMMUNITY HAVE BEEN ALPHA TESTING FEATURES FOR 2142.

In theory, this seems great, just throw something new in and see how the community reacts. I am not really adverse to the idea, in fact. The problem comes in when a feature is added that is instantly recognizable as something that just screws up the gameplay - now they leave us hanging for months waiting and hoping that things will be put right. More importantly, they burn resources doing this INSTEAD OF FIXING BUGS.

Even though people fail to recognize WHY the game changes are made are still affected by them. People are very emotional about their gaming, something that I think EA/DIce has failed to gauge correctly.

I personally don't see this at all. I've been beta testing BF2142 since the begining.

Could you explain this a bit more?

I have the major problem with TBF2 members (not all but some) and EA/Dice. People are not respectful and immature. Its a game people...Arguing and telling someone them they suck and demanding they fix it now will get you as far as nowhere. IMHO TBF2 maybe should think about enacting a new rule that is based on the 3 strikes rule. First-Warning Second-Warning/Time off Third-Banned for anyone who starts to say DICE SUCKS or anything like that. If you have a PROBLEM then actually offer some logical and or common sense help without being an immature asshat about it. Maybe then EA/Dice would listen.

Re: Why is this forums relationship with DICE/EA damaged?

I find it hard to beleive that anyone here could actually produce intelligent insight, yet here it is. You are the people that need to speak up.

I like this game a lot. I can do battle with the best of them. But I must say, this game isn't at all what it seemed to be. I can't think of a single aspect that wasn't done half-fast.

On it's release it had so much to offer... shotguns that killed people, transprt helis that killed people... it had stuff that killed people. Now everything is designed for compassion towards your enemy. It's a perfect reflection of the country I live in, and the state the world is moving toward. Now anything that remains powerful (unnerfed) is considered cheap, cheese.

The ranking system really has to be the biggest flaw. Perhaps with a different implementation it could work, but really it's just a tactic used to stimulate the egos of those who can't see past it and make them slaves to their addiction.

I suppose then that everyone is to blame for it though it seems inevitable.

Re: Why is this forums relationship with DICE/EA damaged?

The first months after release everything was good. They give the support to DICE canada and everything went down the toilet. EA has disrespected the community by giving bad support, so the community has changed. Read any forum, even EA forums and you will see that is not just 2 or 3 angry noobs, is the majority.

They have killed a good gameplay that was fun. Now is all nerfed for the newbs and after you get all the unlocks it just boring to play.

They wanted to do this to make people buy expantion and booster packs and the new game. They know that if they left the gameplay has it was, people will play it for a long time. Now after some rounds it gets boring. No new skills to learn.

Re: Why is this forums relationship with DICE/EA damaged?

DICE NEVER listens to the community sure they let us beta test it but they did not change much from the beta for instance there are still chinese jeeps in jalalabad.

Maybe we would talk nice about DICE if they did something right and acctualy listened to our feedback instead of saying "it would be too complicated" like they did when people asked for the j-10 to be balanced and destroying claymores with nades.

and in other companies it does not take them 106 days to release a patch to fix a major problem in there game when they had the problem solved 70 days ago.

Thanks for the insight. I echo the post that says it's a surprise that this type of insight is possible here and that you are the ones that need to speak up more often.

So, the general consensus is that the community is miffed because of a lack of support (in fixing problems fast enough) and lack of communication from EA/DICE. I don't know if I personally have much else to say or ask - problems like these don't get fixed overnight. I'm more just trying to understand :)

btw, the other game/vendor/publisher I was talking about is Company of Heroes/Relic/THQ.

I love the BF series, and I love DICE Sweden.

IMHO EA and DICE Canada have trashed this franchise.

Re: Why is this forums relationship with DICE/EA damaged?

I think we can all agree that the majority of people who purchased BF2 are not happy with thier product. The question is what do you do about it?

For starters, if you think EA/DICE mismanaged the support on this product or your just not happy with your experience, DO NOT buy 2142, it's the easiest way to drive home a message and probably only effective way to get their attention at this point, no complaining no whining just cause and effect.

On the other hand, I figured since EA/DICE wont listen, maybe their investors would. That being said I wrote several letters to investors as a whole and establishments that communicate regularly with investors, heres an example of a letter I wrote to businessweek, (scroll to bottom and read reader comments under mobbmann) heres the link, btw, you can leave your own comments too on this and other sites and I encourage you to do so in an eloquent, mature manner:
