Is Battlefield 2 the game I'm looking for?

I apologize in advance if any of my comments or questions have already been discussed in previous thread, I look through a couple of pages but there are 51 pages in the catagory alone.

    Here is the deal.
I'm a middle aged vet and my gaming experience is at the most recreational. I'm not a pro or a cyber genius so some of the things I say might sound crazy or out of date to folks out in the gaming world. I will be building a new house come next year. I want to build a video game room for my kids and myself (I have 8 kids, 7 boys one girl.) I wanted build something so that we could all play each other on a LAN Network. Here is a rough sketch of what I had in my mind.

I wanted a Military Simulation game, one that focuses on a tactical shooter, counter terrorism, or special warfare units. So I'm guessing I'll have to get Battlefield 2 with the Special Forces expansion Pack. I hoping for a game that would let me edit the levels or maps, edit the characters and their skins, and also control variables within the game i.e.; Artillery or Air Strikes, Enemy Movements, Lighting, and Enemy positions. Also I want to be able to free float around or "specter" so I can watch how my kids are playing, kinda like a referee.
The Game should let up to eight to thirty two players in from a LAN so we can get everyone in on a game and have them face against insurgents or terrorists, or split up into two teams and have them go head to head. It would be nice if the game would have high end graphics like Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfigther or Rainbow Six: Vegas, but it doesn't have to. It could be early Counter Strike if need be.
So here are my questions so that I can have an idea of what is realistic.
    1) Will BF2 let me create a LAN Party that only my and kids and I can play on, but also have the option of playing online with other people.
    2) What kind of setup will it take to have a LAN Party with 9 people?
    3) How many people can play on BF2 at one time?
    4) Can I edit levels, map, characters, and movements on BF2?
    5) Are Bots on BF2?
    6) Can me and my kids form a 9 person team and go against say 30 Bots on a LAN Party.
    7) Can I specter around and "referee" my kids without them seeing me.
    8) Can I call in Air strikes and Artillery strikes on command, without actually having to be in a Plane or a Tank and physically press the fire button?
    9) What are the graphics like on BF2? 1-10, 1 being an early Counter Strike game and 10 being Rainbow Six: Vegas.
    10) And finally, is BF2 like an MMO where I have to pay monthly for services or is it just pay for game, pay internet connection and have fun?

Okay, I think that is all the questions I have. I let you know if there is more. If can help with just one question or if you have a simple suggestion, that would be so much help to me. I'll appreciate anything. Also can you let me know if you can see my sketch link?

If you want a realistic military simulation, Battlefield 2 is not the game for you. I suggest getting Operation Flashpoint (although you need a lot of addons n s*it to ge the best out of it), Americas Army or Red Orchestra.

Battlefiled 2 is a comic version of qwarfare

        1- yes
        2- no idea
        3- 64
4- with a SKD kit i think (not sure)
        5- yes
        6- no idea
        7- no idea, prolly
        8- yes
9- 8/10, the gfx look good, but the artistic side is a bit boring imo
        10- just pay for game

I know, I suck at answering questions

          You have 8 kids ?

By the way, you might also be interested in SWAT4 game. It's really good, and tactical all the way.

Sounds like you want to create your own little Army lol.

But yeah thats gonna cost you alot, but if you have the cash yeah. You can edit the skins etc since Terrorists apparently have done it already, so you could if you know how to.

Re: Is Battlefield 2 the game I'm looking for?

Also, if you are building a house and want a "gaming room" I would probably go with a more square shaped room with computers sitting on some kind of built in super-desk that rings the room. That'll provide more floor space in the middle and will allow you to build LAN cables into the walls and have simple wall outlets and make the space a lot cleaner.

Re: Is Battlefield 2 the game I'm looking for?

First off, coolest dad ever !

                    Anyways, on to your questions..

Battlefield 2 is not a simulator. It mixes realistic elements and unrealistic ones. This is for the sake of gameplay, and it works very well.

                    1) You will be able to create a LAN server and have your kids and yourself play on it (remember, you will need a seperate computer to run the server) and fill the server with bots. Other people will not be able to connect through the internet to the best of my knowledge, but, you could also host a dedicated unranked server on one computer, and have 8 or 9 reserved slots, guaranteeing you and your kids a spot in the server, and allowing others to join.

                    2) For the server? Pretty hefty. A good 2 GB of RAM coupled with a fast Hard Drive and Processor. Video cards will not matter in this case.

                    3) 64 at a time. There is also a mod which allows up to 128 players.

                    4) You can create maps and player skins, yes. I'm sure with some knowledge you could do animations as well. You would only be able ot play on unranked servers, though.

                    5) Yes. They are fairly intelligent to, nothing spectacular, though.

                    6) Yep. It's called Co-Op. All you have to do is start a LAN server, join the same team as your kids, and add bots to the other team.

                    7) Yes.

                    8) To call in artillery strikes you will need to be the commander. The commander can drop vehicles, supplies, drop artillery and provide UAV's to show enemy movements. To access all of the commanders resources, just click the Caps Lock button, and you will be brought to a menu which gives you all the options above, as well as the options to tell your troops where to go.

                    9) 8. On a top-notch machine, they are amazing. Just look at some screenshots on IGN. Of course, being a year old game, they are not like Vegas.

                    10) No monthly fees. Just bu ythe game and play!

                    Hope that helped.

Re: Is Battlefield 2 the game I'm looking for?

It seems like you've got a good handle on what you really want in a new game.
BF2 is a good one that i'm sure you will enjoy with your family. To get you started, let me recomend Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. It is a free download with no monthly fees associated. Developers are also working on a mod, called fritzbot, that will allow you to play on a LAN and arrange the teams with bots/humans as you see fit. it is also very easy to referee.

check out these sites, they should get you started.

if you are looking for a good forum for tips, tricks, shoot the bull about wolfenstein, whatever:www.qawclan.com

YOU SIR ARE OFFCIALLY THE COOLEST DAD IN THE UNIVERSE! BF2 would be a good game to play. You might also want to consider American Army cause it is totally free (consider how many games to have to buy).

If budget allows, have a seperate computer as a server to host your lan games.
