Re: Why is there a commander option.

Dead thread. Thanks all for posting. I have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to hunt down Gimp when he's playing or Pound the hell outta the "Need new orders" Icon on the Comm Rose.
Anyways, If yal see the running round on the ground on your server screaming for orders, tell me what to do so i can go do it, and we all win.

    Thanks.

I make a pretty good commande, if everyone joins squads and follows my orders and GETS THE H OUT OF THE WAY ON MY ARTY, then I do really good

Re: Why is there a commander option.

Man... I just came out of a round commanding on wake and thought about this thread.

Very amusing round. When I joined the USMC they had no commander (which is a scary think considering how long is takes for me to load). I checked the score. Sure enough, they were losing... badly. I *sighed* and hit the apply button and was accepted as commander.

"Mic check... SL's with mics tell me what squad you are."
"Ah... commander? Who are you talking to?"
        "Anyone who can hear me!"

Thus started a good round of command. Lots of communication between myself and 3 good SLs leading three good squads (two more squads were on, but weren't talking).

We were able to take the northbase and I watched the defence at the airstrip all go charging up there. Squad 3 was loaded in a blackhawk. I gave them the good word that they could come in from behind the flag and take it.
        They did.
I told them to hold the flag.
        They did.

The enemy left the northmost flag undefended as they tried to rush the airport, so we took that easy. At the same time, another blackhawk mobile squad came in and took the southbase after a very nasty fight (I watched the whole thing, spotting constantly).

        That left only the beach.

"Ok guys, just suround it and kill anything that moves! I'll watch for guys sneaking out."
Then the killin began in earnest.
"Alright guys... this here is what we call a slaughter! Fun, ain't it?"
        That got me some laughs.

So yeah, we won and yeah, I was able to toss some very messy arty strikes against a beach spawn point loaded with the entire enemy team.

That it why there's a commander option.

Ironically I think all the commander option does is put you off teamwork.

Work as a squad - Commander artys you
Defend Vital ground - Commander artys you or cartilarys you
Move as a squad - commander UAV's you

Be a lone wolf, on the move and you dont get much grief from the commander.

Still its such a better game with teamwork.

I can command but i get bored just sitting there so sometimes i go into the action and have some fun but i always make sure that:
            1. Constant UAV
            2. Constant Supplies to tanks and anyone who wants them
            3. Give out squad orders
            4. Make sure artill is in the right place at the right time and everytime its fired make sure your squads know about it.

because none of the squad leaders want to listen to the commander whenever im comander and tell people to go for this flag they wont do it.

See, there's one problem with this. There need to be squads to issue commands to. Rare on public servers, and even more rare for them to listen to the commands issued.

You can tell the difference between good and bad commanders in a second (or in 5 minutes when the round ends 150+ to 0).

Because the commander doesn't have time to yell at one retard that doesn't know how to click "Join Squad" at the beginning of the game. Without squads, you lose. It's simple.

The retard comment wasn't directed at you, btw. It was to all the frustration of commanding a team of lone wolves in all the games past.

I have seen some great commanders lately...makes the game MUCH more enjoyable.

If they'd make all commander toys available by Squad Leader request only, you'd ONLY get commanders that can communicate and command.

I meant this in the context that if your a lone wolf the ENEMY commander wont bother with you - wont waste his Arty or UAV on a lone wolf. Where a teamwork orientated squad may as well shout "Enemy commander Kill us please"

I quite agree that a lone wolf cant expect his own commander to send assets to help him when there are squads out there with a greater need.

I'm certanly not advocating lone wolf play. I'm just frustrated that your punished for playing in a squad by being the victim of arty all the time.

                      same question goes for squads...

Is there a server out there with more than 2 people who want to follow orders?

I swear... im freakin sick and tired of ordering a squad to attack a flag, having the squad leader say "negative" then attacking the flag anyway...

moron squad leaders are more pleantiful than bad commanders.

anyways, I have yet to see a commander that commands, if any of you know a server that has commanders that routinely employ strategy and squad tactics

                        holla' back
See the info for the VSFGamers server in my sig below. When I command I don't simply mash buttons. I have multiple strategies and tactics for every map depending upon what the enemy is doing and what resources I have at my disposal. I also use VOIP a lot and encourage my squad leaders to use it as well. When I issue an order I use the Command Interface to communicate what I want (which makes it a single button push for the squad leader to pass on to his/her squad) and follow that up on VOIP with why I issued that order ESPECIALLY if the why isn't obvious. Look for
=VSF=Jspence. There are other excellent commanders on the server. Some that come to mind:

                        =VSF=AngryAfricanman
                        =VSF=Vygramul
                        Sword.com
                        =VSF=Chalybos
                        =VSF=snc8698
                        =VSF=Arctic
                        ackspac10711
                        Angry_Kid
                        RolandTGunner

Edit: Also, on the server load screen and in-game server messages it specifically states "Commanders shall only command." Commanders that want to fly or fight are first warned and reminded of our rule and then kicked.

Re: Why is there a commander option.

Since BF2 was touted as being all about squad level tactics, you have to have a commander to issue orders to squads. That is the reason there is a commander slot in the game.

All the discussion about how sorry commanders are and how sorry squad leaders are and how useless it is to try and command on this server or that one is fine, but it only makes the one venting feel better.

If you want to change it, then enter a server with a few buds. Form up your own squad. Communicat with YOUR commander. Let the commander know that Bravo Squad is ready and able to do what it takes. I promise you this, most of the commanders will bend over backwards to make sure that your squad is taken care of. Your squad will rack up in points and will play a major role in victory. Lead by example. In this game, just as in real life, there are people in positions of lessor authority that have leadership skills that are superior to their leaders of higher authority. Ask any 1st Sgt. in the Army. He leads the 2nd Lt. until the butter bar comes of age and learns. Those that don't, usually don't last long in the field anyway.

BF2 is the same way. If you are a strong player, people will see that and try like hell to be near you and follow your example. You will get out of this game what you put into it.

They exist and it takes you by suprise when it happens. Playing the game the way it was designed is really fun, but happens very rarely.

That might be because he doesn't want a line drawn over the red dots on his radar and doesn't want smoke popped in a place that can obscure enemies. That's one reason I prefer the SL to simply tell me where to go rather than mark it.

On top of that, I've gotten so many retarded orders from commanders that I just ignore them. I don't automatically trust random people to have an IQ higher than 3, so I determine what the best course of action for my squad is so that we can win the game. Just because the commander tells me to defend hotel as US when I'm capping the flag at gatehouse doesn't mean I should drop everything I'm doing and follow his dumb *** orders. It's a pub server, you might as well give up hope of having your entire team working together. At best you'll only have half your team working together. It sucks, but that's how it goes.

no one ever listens to me, and i always get a bunch of 1 person squads

it would be alot better if we could issue step by step directions to attack (something like in red alert 2 and c&c generals)
