Why is there a commander option.

My question is why even bother with the commander option.

It should be renamed "UAV/ Arty Button masher"

anyways, I have yet to see a commander that commands, if any of you know a server that has commanders that routinely employ strategy and squad tactics

I usually command (66.235.163.42), and I am okay at it. I am a mobile commander and sometimes I forget that I am commander... But a good commander will drop supplies on tanks without them asking, spot infantry not on the UAV, and communicate with his squad.

Although in most cases that is SO TRUE.But there are some great commanders, and that alone can win/lose a match.
But good comment though i had a good laugh at that one.

        What I mean is...

"Is there a cammander that tells the squad whre to go stays on top of the game, issues comamnds, uses tactics and straegies such as flanking and redirect support, Have specific squads for certain tasks, and the squads that back them up.
I have this dream in my head and I do not think it will happen without me coreagraphing the whole thing... oh well, TY though I will check out the server tomorrow morn.

not much of that possible in a pub server. too many kiddies wanting stats and not whats good for the team.

i for one have given up on directing where squads go. some flat out refuse, some accept but dont do it. i only DIRECT when i see enemies taking back flags. i tell em using VOIP and some usually respond.

Most pub commanders do not take the game that seriously. My 20 man server runs 16 player maps, so if I could have one squad defending each flag, that would be awesome. But in this game you will encounter who want to gain points rather than just winning.

If you are looking for strategy, join a clan. My clan always plans a strategy before going into a match. I think I have one for almost every map now because of TWL.

Not many squads will do as asked these days. When commander I let everyone know at the start what I'm doing and help them as much as possable with the hope that they will keep me alive. Works most of the time and we usually win.

I've got a lot of command time under my belt... and this is exactly what I try to do.

Problem is, most players don't really co-operate that well. As a commander I dream of a team that listens to orders, know how to use the squad features, and is willing to play for more than just points.

I usually get a couple SLs that know what's going on and work well with me, but not often that maybe one or two squads I can count on per round.

Here's a hint: play as an SL. Use the command coms. Use requests. Ask for orders. Realize that sometimes even the best commanders have their hands full and might not be able to get to you right away.

I usually play on the Internode server and find that you sometimes run into an awesome commander. They spot enemies, give you smart orders, warn you of surrounding enemy, place UAV's appropriately. A good commander with a mic is awesome.

That was my thought exactly after reading the OP's message. :)

My first week of commanding (about a month or two ago), I tried and tried to coordinate a decent attack strategy, but 95% of the time the SL's would ignore my directives and just do their own thing. The ones that did somewhat follow my tactical advice seemed to usually get distracted by something along the way, so they ended up not being very effective either.

Now, I usually just play commander as some invisible helper dude. I'll watch over the squad's shoulders and let them know if they are heading into a hornet's nest, drop supply crates and vehicles where needed without being asked, spot attack choppers so my team's chopper can go and get it, etc. This approach to commanding has actually turned out to be quite effective in that I have turned a Team 0 or Team 1's massive losing streak into a winning streak more often than not, but alas, I admit it would be a lot more fun if SL's would actually take orders because quite frankly, me dropping crates and placing the UAV takes zero skill.

i think i am a good commander. when i apply i only fight when absolutely necessary and do what i can to help my team to victory. however ur right, a good commander is a rare find. the bigger problem in my experience is not an incompetant commander but a lack of efficiency by the team as a whole. i.e. not squadding up, attacking/defending a single flag, or squadleaders who ignore you all together.

**commanders who deny u the oppurtuntiy to command because of their rank but still fight is one of my biggest pet peeves.

personally, i think a good commander:
                        1. spots for his team
                        2. UAV's at hotspots and not on the carrier
                        3. arty on places which actually matter (like a front) and not the carrier
                        4. gives vehicles to stranded units and not cartilery
                        5. communicates with the team to help them win

That p!sses me off the most! I'm a Gunnery Sargeant at the moment and often lose the right to command by higher ranked players. I just hate seeing them running around the field, using tank/apc's racking up kills, whilst our squad is screaming for UAV's or for supply crates.

Unranked Tactical Gamer server (based in the USA) almost always has a commander and the commander is obliged to use his mic to speak to the squad leaders or else he doesn't get to stay as commander.

I come across the odd good one from time to time who just hit's 'V' and says 'Squad 4, tank coming your way' or something. Makes the world of difference.

Well, in the squads defence, it's not alvays you know exactly what's going on in the field. The few times I've commanded, I sometimes get messages from the SL informing me of a situation or requesting help and so on.

But your right. I'd love to play with one bad commander, who tries to do his job properly, than a thousand experienced commanders, who does nothing but mind their own scores.
