Damn in that E3 video it took the guy 1 and a half clips of an assault rifle to take out a guy running perpendicular to him at close range. He finally killed him when he was walking away almost parallel to the player.

The netcode seems just as bad.

It is posssible to hit targets moving @ a high rate of speed perpindicular to your position w/ a single shot

The best way to learn to hit moving targets @ a 90* angle is to play sporting clays, or skeet

I have shot down 3 airplanes w/ the tank maingun, & @ over 100 choppers (in 1 round in Ghost Town I shot down 3 attack, & 5 transport choppers w/ the tank maingun, & an enemy gave me the compliment "chopper raper" LOL

As a matter of fact, I shot down 3 Super Cobras in Sharqi last night in 2 rounds

I was hitting nothing my first time out in sporting clays, but after an old man taught me how to aim @ flying targets it became easy (I was already an US Army expert rifleman), I hit 11 of 25 in sporting clays, he said that was better than most experienced duck hunters do on their first time out, they teach you to NOT aim @ a spot where the target will be because you will always stop, & shoot behind the target, they teach you to let the target fly, & swing from behind the target past the target in a smooth motion, & pull the trigger just as your sights pass the target

That is the "secret" to point shooting

The Realtree Camo patterns are the best products to find all of your favorite hunting products in your favorite Camo Patterns.

Pitman also emphasized that when shooting sporting clays, you shouldn't aim the shotgun like you would a rifle, but instead, you should point the shotgun at the target. "When you point your shotgun, forget about the gun," Pitman advised. The only thing you should focus on is your target. Shut one eye to make sure you mounted your gun properly before opening both eyes and focusing on the target's leading edge."

I hope this helps clear up the confusion:p

you know, there are these things stuck on the ground called "anti-airs" if you shoot a plane with it, the missile follows the plane!!! unbelievable huh?

Good **** here old man. I know its not that useful in BF2, but in SWAT4, where the shooting is more direct and accurate, this will help a lot.

Just try to hit an airplane with a mounted .50 cal machine gun. You will only hit it when it moves towards you or away from you. But when you shoot at it from the side, every bullet will miss. Only if the airplane is slow enough, you can actually hit it.

I think this is a general bug in the BF2 engine.
This was not the case with BF1942. Back then, you had to aim with extremely much lead (you only "really" hit when the projectile missed the target by far on your screen), but at least it was possible to hit a target from any angle.

Am I the only one who noticed this?
                this CANT be more true!

I had so many situations where I was in a tank, and i shot a FAV with a mortar round, the mortar round HIT THE FAV IN THE SIDE, but didnt damage it at all!!!!

also, when i try to kill infantry that running across the field, even though i can see the impact of my shots, i dont get a hit registered thing and the guy isnt injured at all.

And dont even get me started on how many TV missles went through a blackhawk going sideways, and no, it didnt go through the doors.

THX Chris, & of course you are correct, this style of shooting has limited use in BF2, it is most useful @ medium to long range when the "lead distance" forces you to sight well past the target (losing reference) when you are using a gun that will inflict great damage on it's target w/ 1 shot, & the weapon has very little built in deviation, you also will need a lil' luck

                  1. tank main gun
                  2. RPG-7

Re: Hitting moving targets from the side - Impossible?

Well, seems like it is at least possible.
But I played BF1942 and the hit detection felt much better there.
There's definitely something wrong with BF2's hit detection that needs to be fixed.
It just seems like the hit boxes are shrinking along the movement direction with increasing speed (maybe some strange interpretation of Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity?) and at a certain speed it has reached a width of zero and can't be hit from the side any more.

lateley I have been getting better at hitting moving targets. There are the ones that do manage to run past unscathed. I dont know the pint but if you can lead the tarted at the right ping depending on your ping and weapon you can kill any running person. I have heard that you arent suposed to lead a target because of the crappy netcoding and hit detection but I think it all just depends on servers and your ping.

To make matters worse the faster an object is moving the crappier the netcode functions. That includes TOW rockets flying through vehicles (never detected the vehicle in the first place), tank shells doing no damage to fast moving vehicles even though you hit on your screen, shooting airplane cannons at the back of a fast turning aircraft and seeing them hit but doing absolutely no damage. Speaking of tank shells not doing damage to fast moving vehicles that's pretty much the number one reason why I die in a tank. I shoot a C4 jeep suicide bomber and the shot doesn't register and at that point I'm pretty much screwed as they'll reach me before another shot reloads.

It becomes very apparent when you're shooting at a player sprinting especially from side to side ahead of your view. Your aim may be dead on but the shots don't register properly.

If you want an example of what EXCELLENT netcode looks like I recommend you go try playing Counterstrike:Source. With arguably the best netcode of any FPS when you shoot something in that game on your screen it hits them in the game immediately every time.. even if you've got a crappy ping (but it works even better with a low ping).
                            Agreed.

I went from a CAL-IM/M 1.6/Source player to not being able to hit anything going sideways in BF2. About the only thing I was able to hit people with was a heli, hence my obsession with it.

                            :)

its your ping. the object on your screen appears slightly behing where it acctually is. try aiming ahead
