I'm not talking about playing CS:S as a whole but rather to experience what good netcode feels like. Once you've felt good netcode crappy netcode like the kind in BF2 is all too obvious. No way to get around internet lag in any game but if you've died to an AWP whore in CS:S then you've been shot by them.

Maybe this is really a ping issue.
We should try it in Singleplayer mode or in LAN. Anyone did? Is it better there?

I can confirm, its better there. At least that impression I got from a LAN party I was on.

The way you can soften it is not to LEAD the target, but creating a line of fire through which the target passes. You can damage the flying jets that way. Or you can damage running people. I even got a headshot once every while that way.

If that really works, you should be able to find the exact point you have to aim at in order to hit, right? I mean, one of the shots you fired actually hits, so this one must have had the right lead.
The trick didn't work for me in online games, but maybe I should try again.

Many call this "lagshooting". The way I played in SWAT4, with 200 ping was. I shot at the moving enemy, starting with a lead. I moved the cursor ahead, leading the target, but slower than the movement of the enemy. So they caught up, but in the process, I got 3-4 positive hits and took them down.

Its way harder in bf2 because the recoil and cone of fire function differently. In the same manner, but with some difference.

You could try that method too.

And yes, theoretically you COULD find a proper lead.

ie: i shoot and enemy, he shoots me. in BF2, both of us would likely die but in CSS the person which has better ping/computer wins. kinda crappy.

oh and CSS doesnt have the "best netcode"
its proven that even if you jump away your hitbox "lags" behind. so even if you moved behind the wall your still dead because of that AWPwhore you thought you avoided.
This has been happening to me a lot in BF2 1.3.

Put the idea together as a good 'feedback' post and create one there yourself.

                      Maybe some videos or screenshots...

It is almost impossible to hit a guy running perpendicular to you if you are a good distance away, no matter how many shots you higher. That's bf2's crappy netcode for you.

Re: Hitting moving targets from the side - Impossible?

I think there's just too much going on in bf2, and almost all servers are too weak to handle high playerloads.

Say, if a server is advertized as 32 plr server, it's more likely able to run 20 players well, and 32 adequately. Then you get server admins that bump player count from that 32 to 40-50 .. it still *looks* like it runs fine, but it just isn't the same.

Most servers in other games run around 67-100 tickrate. If I'm not mistaken, BF2 servers perform around 30 ticks per second, which I think is way too low for a first-person shooter, where getting a kill or getting killed boils down to milliseconds and tenth of degrees etc.

Also, ping is a huge deal. I don't get how BF2 shows that I have 30-40 ping to uk server, even when I'm pinging 50-60 to those same servers in command prompt. The ping values are pretty random, and people falsely believe they have "good ping, around 30-40" and that should solve all their hitreg problems .. it just doesn't. Server can be very overloaded, regardless of what your ping shows, and I doubt the ping you see even is a real ping.

for me, reg on a finnish 16-32 plr server is completely different thing that what I experience in say, any 64 player UK server, where playing seems very sluggish, everything has a bit of delay, hitboxes are all over the place etc. Even though everything looks like it's fine, when in reality it's just crazily interpolated into looking like "smooth gaming experience".

cs:s is pretty ok, though regular goldsource cs/dod behaves even better. Getting hit behind a corner is just something that you have to suck up in online play .. You can either get very accurate description of what server sees, but have to compensate for lag etc (UT does this, playing with pings 20, 50, 100 have VERY different hitreg, you have to aim differently for them), and have lagging players warp all around the place, or generally smooth gameplay, where ping just gives you slower reactions (HL does this, aiming and playing with ping 150 is somewhat same as with ping 10), but then you have to deal with getting hit behind the corners etc.

Why I like HL engine is that you can tweak your connection settings and get UT-like reg when you're playing on good lowping servers (remove all interpolation and bump up all poll/send rates), and add some interp and drop rates a bit when playing overseas, with just one exec command in console.

Then again, this has nothing to do with BF2 :)

Only advice I can give is find well-behaving servers geographically close to you, and stick to those.. that goes a long way into helping to fix some hit detection problems.

But it'll never be the same as in hl, unreal or quake engine games. I guess that's the price you pay for 100x bigger maps, ****loads of vehicles, people and all sorts of crap flying around your head all the time.

But it was fine in old bf And when you would play DC mod where there are jets that fly fast. You could hit them with cannon fire from any angle. You just had to find the right lead. This is impossible in bf2. Same with infantry running sideways. Well I usually wait till there sprint bar is deplenished and then I start shooting them.

I think they really need to get this fixed at the cause of everything. I don't care if they even would need to make bullets do more damage. I don't care. That leading is one of the things I like most in BF2.

It's not getting better at all with BF2142 either. Just look at 16m:54 secs in this vid.

I don't know about good or bad netcode, but as a sniper, I get lots of hits on moving targets, even perpendicular to my position.
The farther they are, more lead I employ. Usually I need one shot to set the right lead, after that it hits.

Its weird in BF2. Especially when you are in a dogfight and lead the cannons ahead of the other plane, they dont do ****! When the other guy turns and he is even smoking black I lead him with cannons and it doesnt put him on fire. Then I put the SAME amount of cannon fire onto another smoking black plane while they are going straight and it all registers and he dies.
