    Re: Arrow keys or w,a,s,d keys?

    I'm left handed and use my AA setup to play. I, j, k, l for movement. Space for jump, - for crouch and right shift for sprint. I have 4 weapons on my mouse. Mwheel up rifle, mwheel down pistol etc..

              WASD FTW!!! Just to move around on foot, duh!

              Since all the other keys are around it.

                Well, you could move your keyboard to the left so you won't get that problem :)
                I prefer the arrow keys because you have some space left (for resting some fingers :) ) and the chance that you push a wrong button is very minimal.. The distance between the arrow keys and my weapon keys (Insert, Delete etc) and the other keys (ctrl/right shift/keypads) is optimal for me and I use it since Wolfenstein came out so it's a sort of automatism now.. :)

                  Re: Arrow keys or w,a,s,d keys?

                  I use

                  space is backwards
                  mouse 2 is forwards
                  S is jump
                  A and D same as normal
                  left shift is run
                  left ctrl is crouch
                  Z is prone
                  X and left mouse fire
                  middle mouse scroll button zoom when pressed
                  W is main weapon 3
                  Left alt is knife
                  F is pistol
                  E main radio
                  T enter exit

                  This would be hard to convert to. I teach people this way and the people who start this way are happy and find aswd just as strange as this setup will seem to most people.
                  this works well with a split keyboard but the non splittters tend to use a diff key for crouch

                    k, arrow keys unless you're left handed and put the mouse to the left of your keyboard is for remedial kids, that are too fussy and remedial that they need to have little pictures on their keys to tell them what direction they go. it's for *** remedial P.O.S's

                      evilzucchini do you think you could tell me a basic setup of the keys you use.
                      I would. . . but it ALL dependant on the number of buttons you have on your mouse.

                      I have 8 buttons on my mouse. . .I pretty much put everything there that I need to use in the heat of battle. Main weapon, spot, comm rose, 2ndary weapon, fire, ironsights, squad talk.

                      Under my thumb I have, right-win sprint, right-alt crouch, space jump (I can also hit this with my pinky so I can do sprint jumps no problem).

                      I keep prone right under where is comfortable for my pinky (happens to be 'v,' Although, if you do prone jumping, this is not a great place for it).

                      Y = shockpaddle
                      I = pistol
                      o = enter/exit
                      L = medpack
                      ; = parachute
                      , = knife
                      m = talk (commander talk)
                      g,f = switch seats or camera views
                      c = zoom minimap
                      x = bring up map

                      I pretty much have everything I need right around my finger tips. I can switch to anything and everything with a single button push without moving my hand.

                      My set up totally kicks ***.

                      I don't mean to be arrogant (okay, maybe I do :)) but if you are using the arrow keys you have to move your fingers off of them to do certain things.

                      You have to move your hand, while my hand does not move, I just do a quick finger press.

                      Believe me, I have been playing FPS since wolfenstein. I have tried a million different setups and using the arrow keys puts you at a distinct disadvantage.

                          Really? Like what? Okay, yes, I have to move my hand off of them to go grab my joystick when I hop in a jet, or when I want to type out a message to the team, but otherwise, when exactly do I have to move them off of the arrow keys? In 930 hours I have yet to find such an example. Care to elabourate?

                          Again, no, I don't. I have to move my fingers off of one button to press another just like you do, but the hand itself doesn't have to move at all, barring the few instances I mention above. Oh yeah, I have to move it every now and again to adjust my mic if my squadmates can't quite hear me. Forgot that one earlier.

                          As have I, and I don't see what distinct disadvantage you're referring to. Unless you're saying me having my hand on the arrow keys instead of WASD is what's giving me lag, connection problems, causing the servers to crash and also accounts for random bullet deviation, of course.

                              I got really screwed up using wasd. My pointer finger would always go to the "f" for home row. once I lift my hand off the keyboard, my habit from typing would find the "f" key and I'd be messed up in a firefight- So I had to learn something new. Crazy, but I swap my mouse to the other side of the keyboard and use my left hand for the mouse and all my infantry controls in the 10 key!

                                I can hit y, i, o, l, ;, ,, m, n, b, v, c, b, g, f, t, rightwin, rightalt, space all without shifting my hand position at all. That's 18 keys.

                                From the arrow keys, I can hit Ctl, shift and 0 and 1 on the num pad allowing similar hand shifting. That's 4 buttons vs 18. I use everything single one of those 18 keys all the time. Maybe 2 of those 18 I don't need such quick access to, but it is nice just the same.

                                As have I, and I don't see what distinct disadvantage you're referring to. The advantage comes from the fact that I have access to 18 keys without shifting my hand position at all. I can hit any of these buttons instantly, you have to shift and then press to get to most of your keys. It may only be a tenth of a second slower, but that is a lot in an FPS. On top of that, I don't know how you can have access to 18 keys at all from that position without MORE than a shift and an actually movement of your hand.

                                There are no buttons immediately adjacent to the arrow keys. There are 11 keys immediately adjacent to UHJK. Not only that, but with your hand on the arrow keys, there are no buttons immediately under the natural position of the thumb, I have 3 under there. How can you not see the advantage of that?
