    Music ingame?

    Hi there!

I've got one question and one disscusion topic.
How do I get ingame music working without getting lag (is this possible?)?

If you listen to music ingame, why do you do that? What is the purpose? For me, listening to good music can sometimes make you perform better on the battlefield in some way. It's hard to describe, but somehow it gives you some kind of "rush". Am I the only one?

IMO, listening to music with a music player at the same time you play BF2 isn't good. Think about the lag (so damn annoying:|: ), and more important, the sound of BF2 isn't good hearable anymore. I would do one thing at the time, or what I mostly do, turn the radio on

I'm with ya, lov'n it when some good music rushes by when I'm playing, kinda improves my way of fighting:p

I sometimes have Winamp running in the background, and a huge playlist loaded.
Have not noticed any lag so far... I mainly listen to sound when piloting, or driving in a tank.
It can also be fun when infantry whoring and going berzerk.
Map the hotkeys in Winamp so that you can pause, forward, backward, volume adjustment (NOT the system volume, just the Winamp volume which is separate from the global system volume. Very nice if you want to have it running low in the background.)

I crank up my speakers and listen to the BOOMING of ARTY in the distance

          You mean "audible"?
I agree, music via headphones or desktop speakers while playing BF2 wouldn't be good. Maybe a stereo in the background would be better?

I WOULD listen to music when i'm playing..

But I just can't. It feels so weird not being able to hear the game.. and I do really bad. Even in a jet/heli, it feels weird.

And then you can't hear footsteps or the infamous "GRENADE!"

I do it but on an empty server when I'm tooling around. I get lag during each song change.
If I want music in game then I'll put the MP3 player into my speakers.

Yeah or put ipod headphones in under my main headphones.

I used to just put the ipod headphones on like that, and just keep it at a low level, because you can clearly hear things through them.

Those things start hurting my ears though like after 30 minutes or so :hmm:. So uncomfortable.

I agree about the rush thing... but for me whenever I listen to external music (music not intended by the devs) it damages the immersion. The only time I've actually found it useful was when grinding in WoW.

For BF2, I think that listening to music would be damaging... you'd miss so many telling sounds... an approaching chopper or jet, sniper bullets that just miss you and ping off the building beside you or the ground below you, an enemy unit yelling "frag out!" (or your own for that matter)...

If I'm gonna play for real and sort of serious and all that stuff then I plugg in the headset and turn the music off. And I agree those in the ear phones do hurt after a short time.
So do my headphones after a few hours. I wear glasses so the damn things don't help either.

Hmm. I'll try tonight, er, tomorrow when I get the chance to play. If you could balance out the sounds of music and in-game effects, it could be a nice "addition." The problem is resources. RAM and CPU power will get used up on the music, which will probably hinder game play. I can give a report of my findings.

I usually play with headphones so a radio or CD spinning in the background won't be audible - unless it's cranked.

John, I feel you on the glasses/headphones combo. After about an hour of my heaphones pushing my glasses into my skull, my ears and around the ears really start to ache.

Somehow, I actually enjoy music ingame because of the rush. But I actually often listen to loud music, and almost mute the ingame noise, which gives abit more "power" to the music... Know what I'm sayin?

                          Re: Music ingame?

Frankly, I find the music in BF2 to be bland and repetitive, so I often listen to my own music while playing. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:

One, be sure to start your music program before loading BF2, because frankly "ALT+Tab"ing BF2 just isn't a good idea.

Second, make sure you've got some way of controlling your music from inside the game; media buttons work best (and it helps if you've got the G15 too :P).

Third, make the music volume half or lower and your ingame sounds max, this way you won't miss all those telltale signs of almost certain death coming your way.

Fourth, a customized playlist of upbeat music is really going to give you that "rush" and the game an almost cinematic feel (no room for Britney Spears here), however, you'll quickly find the music fading into the background (hence the term "background music") and giving you better concentration and focus.

As for programs to use, I find it doesn't affect my gameplay one way or another (twin Raptors at RAID 0; 1GB RAM), the only thing that appears to be lagged on my system is the music program (takes a little bit to skip a song). However I imagine something much like WinAMP will use a lot less CPU and RAM.

You're correct on the thing with ALT+TAB... It's BS :).
I've got the G15, but sometimes nothing happens when I press the media keys (probably because of too much RAM/CPU used)!

                              .

Precisly why I love my dual core, I have zero problems alt tabbing. I even surf the web while playing to go gather ip addresses for server teamspeak or vent.

After I Oc'd my vid card I love my PC even more.
