great tip and thanks for the info BUT! when I went to the registry to delete the particular key I found I had about 20 with the exact same number/key/ID thing.

Also I have a SATA drive and an IDE drive so is this going to effect anything for me?

Also can I just switch back to DMA mode from PIO without deleting the keys in the reg and have a similar effect or will it just revert back?
[edit] figured it all out but how do I figure out what caused my HDD to flip to PIO mode by itself?

When you reboot it just replaces the values you deleted with new ones. Therefor making it pointless.

Yes when u restart it replaces it with new values, which is the whole point. With no values your harddrive would not work...What it is doing is replacing the PIO-transfer mode values with DMA-transfer values, since you have your harddrive set to auto detect DMA mode. This is just to clear out PIO values that might have been set if your harddrive encountered an error and defaulted to PIO in order to not strain your drive incase it was malfunctioning. Therefore it is NOT useless if you are just coming off a drive error and dont want your HD to be permentantly retarded.

And this is not just for old computers with crappy harddrives. Maybe I dont have uber RAID configs like you, but most normal people have "best bang for the buck" drives which, even rarely so, can encounter errors.

I also have 2 instances of both Primary and Secondary IDE Channels, as well as 2 instances of 'Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller'. Any update on this? is it for sure I can change all of them?

Also, is 'MasterIdDataChecksum' the same as 'MasterIdChecksum'? Because all I have is the first one of the two. In addition, my Secondary one, does not have 'SlaveIdDataChecksum'.

I hate to do this but I am adding something to the mix.
I am NOT using sata I AM using a SCSI ultra320 15krpm cheetah. This is arguably the fastest hard drive on the market. I am getting to the "verifying client data" screen a good 4-5 seconds than anyone else in my clan, but I am not the first in the game. Any suggestions?

Sorry for the bump.. But I do not have MasterIdChecksum or SlaveIdDataChecksum in 001 and 002. Any suggestions on what thats about?
