2142 is not gonna be like bf2.
this time, their even putting in a public beta to fix bugs. im sure the support will be much better. bf2 is a complicated bit of software, and their trying.

also, bf2 has now overtaken counterstrike 1.6 in the xfires most palyed games list. it is now 4th behins WOW, CSS and COD2

Re: What is happening with BF2

I think that Battlefield 2 is dying in the context that is just hastn't (IMHO) generated much "loyalty" from slightly more hardcore gamers.

There'll always be the people who jump on it because it's shiny and new and play it happily and arn't particularly bothered by the issues with it. These people will drop it as soon as something shinier and newer comes out (2142 anyone?) and it'll sit and gather dust on their shelves.

Then there are those that are prepared to put a little more in to get a little more out. Those are harder core gamers (though that is a little of a misnomer) as they're not really "hard-core", they just get a little more involved with what's going on, post on these kind of boards, are prepared to try out mods, join clans for the longer term, etc, etc. Now we can see that these are the people that are dropping BF2 - an awful lot of people seem to be awfully ****ed off with the way EA are treating BF2 so people arn't bothering to run servers and are dropping it in favor of something else.

So, what happens in the long run? EA don't really bother fixing everything that's broken with BF2. EA introduce new features to make BF2 sound more exciting so more people will buy it. They work hard to keep it novel, keep it shiny and new with new packs and new features. They spend money to make money, not to make their customers happy - they are a business, this is how businesses work. The harder core people start playing other stuff, the less hard core keep playing until 2142 comes out and drop it straight away to play 2142. A perfect solution for EA. They sell lots of 2142 and people dropping BF2 is not biggie as they'll have less people complaining. They don't really care about the more hard core gamers as there are much fewer of them.

In my eyes, EA is treating BF2 as "disposable" and people are picking up on this. As it's disposable there no real need to fix it when it breaks, mod support doesn't really matter and it's simply not a problem that people are having problems as it's not long term. As most people will desert it when 2142 comes out then who cares? BF2 works well enough to keep the majority happy and that's all that matters to them.

I really don't believe that they had the same attitude with 1942, it more far more nutured and far better supported. Attitudes have changed now though and it's us that lose out which is a terrible shame. Personally, I loved 1942 and had a definite soft spot for it. I love BF2 also but...there are so many bad games because of padders and stat whores, so many crashes, so much time trying to log in, so many endless deaths by planes, so many revives to get killed again straight away as the medic wants stats, not to help. I got squashed by a commander dropping a jeep on me yesterday. Is that meant to be fun?

Anyway, to cut a long story short (about time I think :-), IMHO, the silent majority will keep playing to some extent and keep buying expansions, the hard-corers will drift away and that's suits EA perfectly. 2142 comes out, everyone buys it (except people *protesting* or who have *lost faith in EA* but that's not enough to matter) and the bandwagon rolls on leaving BF2 in the dust.

If you want to play then on medium you'll need a Geforce 6800GT which is about $180. and the high setting will likely be for the 7800GT and 7900GT. Both cost over $250 ($300 for a 7900GTX). Also, the 7800GT needs a 400Watt power supply while the 7900GTX wants 500 watts. A good 500Watt power supply is anywhere from $50 to $100.

Note: I play BF2 on the default High setting except the screen resolution is 1024X768X70Hz with just a 6600GT.

so while BF2142 can be played by medium to low end players, Quake Wars is gonna need lots of mula.
Hmmm, have you played any of those two games yet? No? Then how can you comment on performance and what will be required to run them at any settings? Just by looking and min requirements? I think we all know by now not to trust what's on the box.

Re: What is happening with BF2

I own a LAN center, with 34 machines, and here's what we've been experiencing...

We put BF2 on all our machines last July, and people still play it a lot, even after the 1.3 patch. No big issues with local crashes currently, but they way the servers crash all the time makes it look like our machines have problems, so I dislike the game from a business standpoint, because it makes us look bad.

Casual players try it once or twice and walk away after getting owned too much on public servers. The only way they’ll stay with it is if they run single player, or start a LAN game with other noobs. Serious players generally don’t play BF2 in LAN centers, but we get them once in a while.

Most BF2 players we get don’t know or care about unlocks, ranks, medals or badges. They do care about fragging their buddy next to them, and messing around crashing helicopters. They play it for fun, not seriously like CS.

We put SF on only 10 machines, and very few people played it more than a few minutes. Primarily because most maps are so damn dark that you can’t see what you’re doing, even if we have all the lights off in the place, which we often do. If customers want to run around in the dark getting surprised, they’ll play Doom 3 which is vastly more fun for that kind of user. Not a critique of SF, which I like playing on my personal machine, but it’s perceived as BF2 that’s “too dark to see” by Joe Average, in my experience.

Because of the preference for vanilla BF2, we didn't put any booster packs on any machine. No EF or AF. No complaints, and there's no way I'm spending that kind of money on maps that should be free. I put them on my personal machine, and I feel like an idiot for having done so. $10 for 3 maps on a $50 game isn’t much money, but it also isn’t much value. I sure as heck won’t buy 34 copies of 3 maps at $10 a pop.

Most of my customers play WoW 10 times more than BF2, because for them, BF2 is seen as being something for LAN only games, or when the WoW server goes down, or you get a new guy in the place who doesn’t yet have a WoW account and doesn’t know how to play CS.

BF2142? Give me a break. $1700 for a game most people will play once, say “Hey, this is just like HALO” and then go back to playing WoW? No effing way. BF2 has been a huge waste of money for me as it is, because the vast majority of players prefer HL2 or CS to BF2. HL2 looks gorgeous on our machines, and it’s vastly more involving than BF2 which has become, for a new player on a public ranked server, just an orgy of spawn-get-artilleried, spawn-get-J10ed, spawn-get-PKMed.

Just my experiences, but I can tell you that we will be getting Quake Wars, and we will be putting other new games on the machines later this year, but as far as any of the Battlefield franchise goes, it’s going to take a hell of a turnaround in how wildly mismanaged the product line is, before I buy a new game with the words “Battlefield” or “EA” on it.

                Brilliant.

but... I'm getting bf2142 for a couple of reasons... namely I like the idea, I'm sick of BF2 and its "elite" (our good friends the c4 chucking, bunnyhopping dolphin-diving claymore spamming jet whoring noob-toobing masters of the universe.. who scream to players like me to adapt, even though they're impossible to hit and kill me in 1 or less bullets) players, and there seems to be a more mature attitude towards bf2142.

All the whiners are going to QW

Don't believe me? Compare the attitudes displayed on the www.totalbf2142.com and www.totalquakewars.com forums.

if you're going to rebute my claim, post evidence. I know I will.

I agree, especially since BF2 needs MORE than the minimum to play lag free with any kind of eye candy.

I may play the BF 2142 demo when it comes out but I won't be spending my money on 2142. Hopefully we get a good patch on the next one but I wont be holding my breath I'll be more likely holding onto my wallet

To be honest as much as I criticise EA, I wouldn't get 2142 anyway... I don't like the future type games.. Halo was just a big put off for me, I much prefer WW2 or Modern shooters, they just have a more homely feel for me.

And what makes you think 2142 is going to be annnnny different? There will still be dolphin divers, there will still be bunny hoppers and im pretty damn sure there will still be claymore spammers and explosive throwers (whatever that explosive may be)

Really, why are you under the impression its going to be any different? Its the same engine, same style of gameplay.

Well I think I may get both QW and BF2142. Quake Wars looks like it's gonna have an almost command & Conquer meets BF2142 gameplay. I like that you'll now have to build artillery in order to have artillery.
