I am trying to run BF2 on a widescreen laptop with Vista and a 8600M GS. Because of the interaction between Vista and the nVidia card, the refresh rate is stuck at 59.something, and because EA is smart like that, the game requires a rfr of 60. Apparently, the same video.con file allows me to change this (by setting it to res x res @ 59 rfr ) but my video.con looks like:

When I run BF2, I get an icon in the middle of the screen, the screen blacks, then crash to desktop. What's missing and how do I put it in, or do I need to change something, or both?

Btw, running at 1400x1050 with a native of 1600x1024 on Vista Home Premium SP1, 32bit, have 1.41 patch, have not installed SF or the other ones.

I think you are meant to edit all the video.con files in Documents\Battlefield 2\Profiles\
Also I heard putting rem in front of the line works, not sure with 59Hz tho, you might have to put 59Hz in to force the game to use it.
If it works you can then edit the BF2 shortcut by right clicking on it, select properties and change the Target to "C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\Battlefield 2\BF2.exe" +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +restart 1 +szx 1400 +szy 1050

I found the correct video.con file (in documents) and tried both options with that and changing the target. Didn't work, so I uninstalled, am defragging, and am going to reinstall again.

Im having trpuble, got a brand new monitor and everytime I click on bf2 it starts up then just crashes back to desktop - wont let me edit my video.con file and the shortcut thing wont work.

You may need to be logged on as Administrator to edit the files, open them with notepad.

If you are using vista you may have to turn off User Account Control by Right clicking on computer, select Security Setting on bottom left and turn off user account control.

edit the document and still cant get it too load - no idea what is wrong.

If you delete the battlefield 2 folder in Documents this will wipe all your settings. You will need to retrieve your account by clicking on manage accounts, so make sure you have your username/email and password.
If you can get into the game you can then set up your audio, video, controls etc.
If that doesn't work either your monitor runs under 60Hz or your game needs to be re-installed.

Yeah I can't get the game to run on a fresh install of XP SP3 - The game kicks me to desktop and I've deleted the Battlefield 2 folder in My Documents and tried just about everything - I'm having the same problem with Battlefield 2142...

I had same problem with same OS and SP, mine kicked me to desktop when i clicked on a server then clicked "join". i reinstalled bf2 and its ok now but i am wondering if all i had to do is reinstall gamespy arcade cos i did delete that from my system a while ago before i got back into this game.
just a thought and probably useless to you but something i am gonna try next time i have this problem.

Ok, I did have trouble getting my 24” monitor to work with the Res 1920 x 1200 and after I had done all the above mentioned,

Solution!

Uninstall, and re-install. patch to 1.41 then I done the properties in the icon +menu 1 +fullscreen 1 +szx 1920 +szy 1200. Install SF, patch to 1.41 then installed EF and AF and finally patch to 1.41 again. No messing around with the Video.con files

It was a bit of a harsh solution but it worked and now it looks a treat!
