I think my computer all up brand new would be about $4k, but luckily I got everything at mates rates for $1500.
I like the arty post, I do the same, except the commander doesn't usually notice me til it goes neutral, usually capped and driven straight outta there before it lands there. No hanging about

Fake I got raedon 9800 256 mb too, you never had any issues with graphics lag/stutter?

edit: I've tried multiple settings in game and in ATI control panel, the stupid thing is turning every single graphics setting in BF2 down to low doesn't make any difference in fps, for me there's sort of a sweet spot I got to hit in the medium setting range, I can't get fps higher, just lower =\

Dont use the regular ATI drivers. Try instead the omegadrivers they seem to be a lot friendlier for BF2.

I know for a fact that a better rig helps. I was an normal player in the middle ranks at the end of a round with my last PC; which was a AMD1600+, w/ Geforce 5200, & 1GB CorsairValue. Though I could see a the enemy and hit them dead on, if a firefight brokeout, the frames dropped so quick, it was game over for me.

When I jumped to my Opteron170 w/ 7900GT & 2GB OCZ, the game did a complete 180. I am still running the original Audiolgy, I will upgrade someday but I have not seen a need for it yet.

I could turn my shadows off, but there was a poll about that. It is better for me to have shadows on, which helps when you know someone is above you because of a shadow that is cast.

I have to warn you, if you are going Dual Core, BF2 is not coded for it so you will need to turn your affinity to CPU=0 everytime you fire BF up. Nice to see someone else jump over to WinXP64

Not sure if that's right mate. I run a dual core AMD 4400+ and never disable one of the CPU's to play.

Maybe its a problem with XP64, but otherwise you are right. I run an Opteron 175 dual core with XP Pro and have never had an issue. I do have the AMD hotfix installed, and I also used the Multi-processor ACPI HAL layer when installing XP.

Recently I was over at a mates place and he started playing BF2 while I watched. The first thing I noticed was how hard it was to see and hear enemy soldiers on the maps. This made me think of all the little things that make life a little easier for players with a decent rig.

- Seeing enemy soldiers running around from a great distance.

- Seeing the muzzle (if that's the right word) fire from the guns. This is quite useful when trying to locate where an enemy soldier is firing from.

- Hearing the footsteps of enemy soldiers coming from behind you.

These are some of the sights and sounds I rely on when I'm playing. I could definitely see and hear the difference on a lower end machine. I guess I was lucky to start playing BF2, when I got my new PC a couple of months ago.

Anybody else notice things like these?

I agree with the sound, but the graphics detail level can actually be a downfall. I mean, I used to play without shadows and lower textures, and the snipers were as noticeable as a black spot on a white rug. Ever since I've been able to play with everything set to high on 1280x1024, I find it's more difficult, yet more realistic, to see the enemy.

Really? I have three people that we all have the same problem. We are all running different brands of NForce4 (Asus/DFI) & dual cores. We all have goofy crashes that completely cleared up with the affinity fix. I will need to look into the AMD hotfix. I was assuming that hotfix had been included in the service packs because I remember all the fuss it caused a couple years ago.

Thanks for the reminder on that one. Save me sometime, you have any links? I'm sure I can find them quick enough. But if you have any KB articles, I would like to see some other ides.

Well Ive got another bomb to drop. You guys are running on 17 and 19 inch monitors right? I recently added a 26 inch wide screen, now I can see the eyes of my victims when I snipe them at 100 meters and Im able to hit almost anyone when thier on the run.
I added that to my system which is an Asus mother board with a P-4 over clocked to 3.5 gig, a 120 gig sata drive, 3 gig ram, 7800 GT OC video card (over clocked also), and a Audigy 2 gamer edition. I normally run my sound into a pair of Koss head phones and dont miss anything.
Now I know that BF2 doesnt support wide screen so Ive streached the normal screen to fit. After the first couple of days I hardly notice anymore and I find the fatter targets easier to hit. Even when they are on the run. I would say any system upgrades will add up to more in game points. . . . . . . . .Red

When my Audigy 4 was on back order, I was using the onboard 5.1 sound with the Logitech 5500D 5.1 Speakers. It used to sound TERRIBLE! Sound would all get "mashed" together and would be very irritating. I had to change the setting to only have it stereo without the 5.1

When I got the new soundcard, I pumped the settings back up and noticed a massive difference in quality.

Finally, a fellow Audigy 4 user. I thought I was the only one that had one of these things! I got mine because my Realtek AC97 drivers were crashing half of my games. I found an Audigy 4 at Best Buy for $88 so I took it. The X Fi's were still WAY overpriced at the time. It is my first non-onboard soundcard, and I could not believe how much difference it made. I was really just getting it to get rid of the crashes, but once I heard EAX sound I knew I would never go back to onboard.

My lovely computer has saved me cartillery countless times as a sniper. Being able to see the shadow on adjacent buildings of the thing falling has warned many a times ^_^.

3 - Edit your registry to enable the HOTFIX, follow these steps.
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Right-click HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Session Manager, point to New, and then click Key.
3. Type Throttle for the new key name.
4. Right-click Throttle, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
5. Type PerfEnablePackageIdle for the value name.
6. Right-click PerfEnablePackageIdle, and then click Modify.
7. In the Edit DWORD Value box, type 1. In the Value data box, make sure that Hexadecimal is selected, and then click OK.
8. Quit Registry Editor.

4 - Make sure your BOOT.ini has this command in it, /usepmtimer to check, right click on My Computer go to properties, click on the ADVANCE tab, then under startup and recovery click on settings, then click on EDIT....make sure your boot.ini looks like this
