Good graphics and sound DEFINITELY an advantage!

Recently I was over at a mates place and he started playing BF2 while I watched. The first thing I noticed was how hard it was to see and hear enemy soldiers on the maps. This made me think of all the little things that make life a little easier for players with a decent rig.

    - Seeing enemy soldiers running around from a great distance.

    - Seeing the muzzle (if that's the right word) fire from the guns. This is quite useful when trying to locate where an enemy soldier is firing from.

    - Hearing the footsteps of enemy soldiers coming from behind you.

These are some of the sights and sounds I rely on when I'm playing. I could definitely see and hear the difference on a lower end machine. I guess I was lucky to start playing BF2, when I got my new PC a couple of months ago.

Anybody else notice things like these?

To add onto what you said, its also nice to hear that distinct clink, clink, clink before that little ball of hate explodes.

Ever since 1.12 patch my graphics stutter, before that patch I ran **** as infantry on every server I played on but after the stutter started I stopped playing as much. It's just not enjoyable...I get killed by sucka privates that just hit their A & D keys back and forth and I can't hit them while my **** is stuttering, this has happend a thousand times. The newest ATI driver update actually worked on my card, for the longest time I was using an update from November 2004 and that was the ONLY one that didn't give me crazy ass stutter on EVERY game I played until the newest one from last month. That new driver helped stop the stuttering from happening as often as it used to and my kills are higher and my deaths less (more kills less deaths = more fun) but it hasn't stopped completely and I still get cheap shotted by stuttering character models.

I hadn't before but realise I use all of these also.
17" LCD with a decent Radeon 9800 Pro 256Mb card so I can see long distances crystal clear, and see a sniper shoot
Creative Inspire 5600 5.1 speakers with bass so I can hear people behind me, which direction noise is coming from, how close or far any kind of vechile is e.g. tanks make different noises from vodniks.

I was an AT on the hill of Dragon Valley aiming rockets at a heli on the staircase of the main building. Killed it. Didn't move for a sec before hearing rustling in my back speakers, cracked out my 12shot shotgun and spun around and point blank blasted a knifer enemy in the face

        Good times..

EDIT: HABO3, tryed turning down your gfx to Medium? Maybe your card can't handle the patch details as well anymore

Fake I got raedon 9800 256 mb too, you never had any issues with graphics lag/stutter?

edit: I've tried multiple settings in game and in ATI control panel, the stupid thing is turning every single graphics setting in BF2 down to low doesn't make any difference in fps, for me there's sort of a sweet spot I got to hit in the medium setting range, I can't get fps higher, just lower =\

Yeah I do. I'm happy with medium settings, they still look pretty and have an in game performance quality to be happy with also.
My game stutters on high sometimes too, and goes completely screwy with anti liasing x8 + lol looks astonishing for half a minute though :p

I set the ATI catalyst 6.5 to Battlefield's choice.. Then adjust video settings in the menu option of BF2..

Mine runs well on high... very very rarely the grass bounces a bit on op clean sweep... think thats more down to me using stock drivers on the card tho...

BF2 has cost me over £900 so far in its lifetime on hardware... at least I wont need anymore for 2142 tho :-p

My old card was a 9800 pro 128mg and i could play on all med with high framerates. I turned my settings in the control panel to custom then slid the sliders to high performance. It definitely sound like somethings wrong with your rig.

the only things I keep on high are Geometry and Effects, just like the OP was saying...higher setting on certain things give you advantages over lower end systems

high geometry lets you see vehicles/infantry from further out

high effects causes everyone who shoots any weapon except the suppressed pistols to have a huge muzzle fire brighten up around their body and give away their position

...in case anyone didn't know :P

Muzzle flashes definitly help out alot. I can see someone firing miles away because of it! Dunno who the hell would wanna set their lighting effects to low just to be able to see people in the 1-2 indoor places in BF2. Might as well turn your gamma up.

I've set mine to medium. Custom Screen 1024. Lighting and shadows on Low, no one can hide in the dark. Terrain and texture on HIGH, just to be able to tell the difference in everything. Anti liasing OFF, I'm ok with sharp edges on my knife

Re: Good graphics and sound DEFINITELY an advantage!

I reckon good graphics and sound definitely help. I'm using a 6600 at the moment and have to set everything to pretty low settings and it makes it harder to see what's going on. I'm forever squinting at bushes trying to work out whether they're snipers or not and not setting draw distance to 100% is a bit tricky too.

I was previously playig with a 6800GT until it died and it was a heck of a lot easier to see what's going on. Quite how much difference it makes I'm not too sure, but it definitely hinders play.

yes very good to have sound that plays all the ambiants good to know when someones comming up behind you as you can hear their footsteps and be ready for them lol , usually makes it easier to pinpoint snipers by the sound of the shot firing

I did something similar on Karkand. Love the surprised look on the victim when you turn around :)

I should add the setup I use is 2 x 7800GTX's in SLI mode with Logitech 5500D 5.1 Speakers. Works like a charm :)
