Quake wars coming + bad BF2 patches = last meaningful competition season for A LOT of clans/ladders/leagues...

It is my opinion that people and teams pick up teamwork skills based on what works and what does not work. This game is NOT competition material and anyone who tried to hold a contest are simply fooling themselves and the only thing that matters is inflicting enough deaths on the opposite team fast enough to run down the tickets and win.

Next time, how about pernament death competitions?
I suggest you take a look at the 21cw tourney... They are pretty serious about battles, and no freaking clans crap. Basic tactics are used, point defense (c4 at flag), mines on roads, air support + artillary before incoming ground troops...

That tourney revitalized this game for me, because for the first time, even if we were loosing I felt that the game was being played as it was meant to be.

Of couse there was noob toob abuse, some chucking but for the most part the essense of the game was truely there.

The damage was already done. Our squad has not been very active in BF2 lately. We have been looking at mods and other titles that dont contain the problems that BF2 has presented to us as a squad.

I personally play the game regularly, maybe I dont know any better but am really waiting to see how this story plays out. I have seen this from some other games in the past where there is a split between the community and the developer.

I hear people saying that 5v5 has become boring.. Battlefield was not designed for such a small number of players.

Battlefield was designed with huge battles in mind.

The whole squad hopping debate reminds me of the CVAR debates in RTCW. The clan players would tweak the gfx settings till all the players were solid black blobs and the world was bright pink.

The clan mindset seems to be that if its in the game, no matter how cheasy it is, use it to get an advantage. Its not about fun, its doing whatever it takes to win win win!

              What's wrong with that?

              Winning is fun.

              Losing sucks.

Re: The End of Competitive Play in Battlefield 2?

Christ, talk about whinning clan players, listen to all these pubbers knocking the most fun way to play this game.

If I wasnt playing BF2 as a clan member in a competitive league, Id have left this game a LONG time ago due to sheer bordom.

For all those pubbers out there who have never experienced a clan match, and think its just about expoit usage and glitching, to me you are just showing your complete and utter ignorance of the clan based game.

Winning a clan match feels roughly 1000 times better than obtaining that gold star, or getting your name listed as having the most combat points for the round, (both of which hold as much meaning as a wet fart). Clan players train their asses off, so we can get these wins, and when EA/Dice decide to mess with the game, all the training, endless tactic creation and getting used to exactly how the game works, all have to be completely re-examined and a new style of play learnt and perfected for every new patch.

Ive played many other games as a clan member and I have never experienced this before. This is the very reason why the clan community are so ****ed off with the constant patching and gameplay changes. 1.22 got it right for me, no tube noob, no C4 whores, weaker jets and helis, it was the best this game has been and now its ruined again.

Flame away pubbers, and go earn some gold stars, lmao

I would say a more appropriate stereotype is that non-clan people always have to go whine every time they get worked by a clan that is working together. I'm sorry, but even with all the nerfs, you are rarely going to stop a clan that is working together on Teamspeak or Vent unless you yourself are doing the same thing.

Certainly, squad-cycling made it easier to do that, but that has been going on since day one and there is no way it takes 10 months to decide it's an exploit. You can call it that since EA officially labeled it that, but common sense tells us that they bowed to pressure from the whiners that abound. Anyway, that issue has been beat to death. My point is that if you got owned by clans before all of these fixes, you're still going to get owned.

I do believe the smallest map is for 16 players (i.e. 8 vs. 8).

This is a silly example, but bear with me. It would be like the NFL getting together tomorrow and saying that substituting players was no longer allowed. The teams would be up in arms because that totally f---s the game up that they've been playing. Obviously, they will have to learn a new strategy or stop playing.

Now everyone is going to point this out, yes that would NEVER ACTUALLY HAPPEN.

Furthermore, most clan matches (if not all) require the use of battlerecorder and if glitching or exploiting is going on then the team that lost would certainly challenge the results.

Like I said before, stop badmouthing all clans just because there are some bad apples. Most are just a group of guys that wanted a regular bunch of people to play with instead of relying on the normal public players to be competent at teamwork or the rest of the game.

Now, if you're not in a clan good for you. I'm not implying that only people in clans are any good at the game, or trying to insult non-clan players. I'm just fed up with all the "clans blow", "clans exploit", and so on.

                    lemme guess:

"we can't squad hop - se we quit"?

Re: The End of Competitive Play in Battlefield 2?

I agree with the ideal of adapting to a new game, but I disagree with the concept of making major changes to core sections of the game, sections that were paramount to a successful clan match. These 'patches' not only attempt to fix bugs, exploits and other issues, but it adds features and removes others that completely changes the nature of the game. Implementing drastic changes such as dropping vehicles MONTHS after the game's release is far too radical and shouldn't be introduced in patches. As for Code7, if you watch the video, you'll understand why they are so (I guess were) good.

"Playing on a high level requires vast amounts of time, and if the developer constantly attempts to destroy all that is appreciated, all motivation is quenched. This has happened to such a degree that it is no longer possible to keep playing at the level the clan has set out to play at."

Arguably Battlefield 2's top professional team's departure is proof of the growing void between EA/DICE and a majority of the community, and it seems the latest patch is the catalyst for many players to simply stop playing Battlefield 2. While I have not completely quit Battlefield 2, I loathe EA's constant 'patching' that adds features and removes features months after the release, wreaking havoc on strategies employed by clans and distorts all the skills that people have learned based on the previous version of the game.

On a side note, I'm sure you have seen Code7 in action, as their latest claim to fame "Duck and Cover Redux", showcasing Redux's exceptional skills both in infantry and the solo-helicopter. If you haven't, watch it, it's an excellent video :

End of competitive play? Not yet if you ask me, but if people don't take some action by making some PRO mods then there will be no competition.

The maps in this game are too poorly made in my opinion, sure they're entertaining but for balance/competition it's poop. Having ONE game mode limits things even further, the game needs an overhaul with map design through community input and approval. This game needs to go back to its roots (DESERT COMBAT) IMO.

I realized back in battlefield 1942 that vanilla battlefield is pretty poor compared to what a good mod can do. I remember EOD in bf1942, that was one of the best game experiences I ever had (gorgeous maps). Then there was FH and I loved their method of balance through assets and terrain.

I never liked dolphin diving and squad hopping but I also don't like EA messing with core gameplay changes almost a year after being left as is. What is most important is fixing the bugs right now, after that they need to give some true support to the mod and competitive communities.

By majority I meant not only the clan community, but rather the vocal Battlefield 2 community as a whole.
