Tips for Great Teamwork post 1.3 (by request)

It seems some folks have been having some issues adapting to squad work since 1.3 killed "the" tactic... that being squadhopping, of cource.

So hears some general help for those who are having trouble.
We'll start with a BR file of some good teamwork in action:

Note: I had no clanmates in my squad and VoiP happened to be down for the evening. This usually impairs things greatly, but as you can see I had some good squadies that knew how to be teamplayers... and we kicked ass.

Some simple tips on getting good teamwork going:
    - Put the onus on you. You are the only one you can control, so look at things you can be doing to promote teamwork. When you show people how it's done, they are likely to follow your example.
    - Don't expect people to follow you properly when you are SL. If they don't know how to be good squadies they need to be shown. It's much easier to preform teamwork as a squadie than as SL.
    - Always, always, always spawn on your SL. That's what he's for. He's your heart of the squad and needs you there... even if he doesn't know it.
    - Stick with the SL. Try to avoid breaking off or being distracted. Once the squad fragments, it's generally doomed.
    - If you are SL, remind people that if they want teamwork, they have to spawn on and stay with you. don't bother calling 'em noobs or having a tyrad... they'll just tell ya to eff yourself and leave.
    - There should always be a medic in the squad ready to revive/heal the squadleader. Check out what Finger was doing in that .demo. He was an SLs dream come true for the whole round and you can see how big it paid off.

A few more advanced things to bare in mind:
    - Watch your angles. Try to be aware of where your mates are looking. There's nothing worse than getting your whole squad killed because you forgot to shoulder check/look behind you!
    - Be effective. I know, that sounds very general and obvious, but there's more too winning a round of BT2 than simply being a better shot than the other guy. Try to work your angles of attack and the direction you assualt from in ways that the enemy isn't going to expect or be defending against. Most players are very predictible. If there's a fight raging between 2 checkpoints, very often you can come in from the side and catch the enemy with their pants down (see .demo file).
    - As an SL you have 2 main duties. Get someplace where people can spawn to effectively attack and to survive. As shown in the .demo file, this doesn't always mean you have to run and hide. If you know you've got medic support, you can afford to get involved.
    - Be aware of your teammates! If someone just died (and they're good teamplayers) you should know that they will be respawning on you in 15 seconds. Try to take cover until they rejoin you and give 'em a good place to spawn (ie, NOT right infront of an enemy tank!).
    - Suck it up. You're going to die. You are going to have to travel. Practice getting to good places quickly and know where you can spawn in order to make the trip. With luck, you'll have a good commander who will spare a round of Cartillery to give you a ride.

    Personal notes:
    - I prefer playing SL as support for a couple reasons. I'm armoured so I'm not a likely to go down fast. I have a big gun that makes a mess outta people if they should happen to get in my way. I know I'm not going to have to worry about outrunning my squad 'cause I'm SLOW!
    - Try to play on servers that have VoiP active. Learn to make quick communications that keep your squad informed. When you're playing together, they help alot. "Moving now", "Hit the flag!", "I need cover", "hold your fire! Don't draw 'em!", and "gawdamnit! Where the farq are you guys??" are good examples.

    Hope this helps someone.
    Bring on the additional tips/comments/discussion/whatever.

I personally prefer being a medic or an engie in a APC as a squad leader. My freinds have done well being sniper or AT.

being a medic makes the most sense in my head, since as a squad leader I'm always behind the wave of squadies, so if they get hurt then can easily turn around and come to me, or the health pile I set up. The L8A1 is the gun I prefer as a squad leader medic, it's scope is great for spotting guys rushing at your sqaudies, and it snipes well enough, in a pinch on full auto you can defend your self. Also being a squad leader and a medic, sometimes I get killed, however alot of the people I play with, especially now, have reason to run over grab my kit, and revive me if possible. then if they die I just run up, grab my kit back and revive them. The other reason I go medic or unarmoured is that if I die, I make a mad sprint back to where I should be, usually getting one or two squaddies spawning on me as I go, now with car drops (if you got a good commander) I guess that dosen't matter THAT much, but I still like being able to run to my safe spot ASAP.

wargimps has covered pretty much everything, but I'll just say I've been playing and winning without squad hopping 99% of the time since the demo. and nothing has felt SLOW.

There are strong arguments for playing SL as a medic. I just personally find that playing as support suites me better.

I wouldn't say there's a wrong kit to play SL. Whatever class the SL is most comfortable with AND suites the duty at hand is the best choice.

That's Exactly why your view of what a mess the "Squad" has become holds no weight for me. You play on acouple different servers where alot of people know you(roughly your words :p ), therefore you couldn't possibly understand MOST peoples complaint. Squad Hopping Bad vs Squad Cycling Good.

I'm no different than you are.
For the longest time, I was unaffiliated with anyone. The tips I presented above are gear towards playing on random pubs with people you don't know. That's what I was doing before I got sucked into R2 and is why the decided to bring me in (that and my bent sence of humor ).

This thread also has nothing to do with the squad hopping/cycling debate. That's a dead issue. This thread is about adapting to the way things are.

I didn't mean to imply that theres a BAD squad leader choice. I personally wouldn't go on foot as a engie. and most weapons have good range, I mean I can do well enough with a pistol because I've played so much AT and engie. however assualt and spec ops are very much up front agressive classes better suited as a squadie in my opinion, support and AT draw alot of attention to them selves because of their weapons. A medic with any gun aside from the L8A1 is a great squaddie, but for me I found that gun and being a squad leader to work out quite well, but like you said anything your comfortable with, and thats what i'm comfortable with.

I didn't mean to imply that you were imply that... crap... lost my train of thought.

Um. Oh yeah. Whatever you find to be the best kit to SL with it prolly your best choice. Other than sniper. Sniper SLs blow. 'Cause they snipe. 'N stuff.

I'm curious, has anyone actually viewed that BR file?

I'm also noticing that it's bloody hard to get you people to talk about the game! Gripin, moanin, yappin about smacktards, being a smacktard... those things get a ton of attention. Bring up a hand full o tips and try to get a little diolog going about the new system and the thread drops like a friggen rock.

                  *shrug*

I don't know I've seen some good sniper SLs, and the fact that they are almost always at a distance is a good thing, plus if they set up in a area with a couple claymores, you know when you spawn it'll be pretty safe from infantry.

I think at this point, people that enjoy the game, and know how teamwork works, are just playing. Like these couple guys that joined my friends and I last night, both using voip, taking turns in vehicles. seem thats most of the people on the forums at this point, are here to complain, legitametly or because they just got, bombed, or shot by something and it needs a nerf so it dosen't happen again.

smart people that join your squad also do a quick mic check, when they join, and sometimes if they don't hear anything they move on to another, which is fair enough. So for now I think after the round starts I'll be making a squad called voice, or VOIP, something to that effect, so that people that do use voice know theres a squad that will use it.

I play a lot with my housemate on a home network. We have found that havin 2 guys workin hard on teamwork attracts others to our squad. We usually get some who p*ss fart about but lots of others just waiting to be lead, and enjoy usin a SL who plays with a bit of brains.

I really like joining a squad and then looking at the map to choose a spawn point and seeing that all the green dots are clustered together rather than scattered all over the map. That's always a good sign.

I also find that using the squad comms with just one other person tends to encourage the rest of the squad to do the same.

I agree with Wargimp - showing some teamwork is the best way to get some. Guys who think that calling for repairs/ammo/etc is a waste of time don't tend to bother, but if you can show them that if they ask for ammo you'll give it, then they start to play more as a team and stay close (because everyone like to have lots of ammo on hand and a medpack nearby, right?)... Acknowledging the "spotted" calls and helping to do something about it is reassuring for your squad too. When someone calls off a tank, I hit a quick Page Up and then set about helping the squad take it out. People like to know you'll take notice of them and help them out.

Also, if you're not the SL, requesting orders is good to - it sends the message to your squad that you want to play as a cohesive unit and invites them to do the same...
