    Re: Valve/Steam vs. EA/DICE

Funny, I just joined up in CAL open CS:S league since I've been playing CSS alot more lately.

Its a great game, with much better support than EA gives BF series.

Steam auto update is great, and game only cost $19.95

Its a much better game for competition, BF2 is more for ****s and giggles

      Re: Valve/Steam vs. EA/DICE

EA/DICE has vehicular combat on a much larger scale than half-life

its Vivendi/Valve, steam is a delivery platform, and the only compairable dice version is the ea downloader.

basiclly if you wanna get down to brass tax.

dice has really ****ty buisness practice, most likley due to ea managment. valve has some of the best buisness practice in the industry.

if we are compairing buisness valve is much better, but if we are compairing games, come on man, its bf2. half-life doesnt come close!

ps this is comming from a guy that absolutly loves half-life and its mod community and a guy that hated bf1942

eh you just linked to 2 random forums with nothing to do with anything what the hell? At least make it difficult for me to make your arguments look stupid...

really? So you actually are ignorant of the fact that all hits are calculated server side and that on your computer you could get blood decals all over a target's head which are animations done client side and have registered no hits at all - ignorant doesnt even come close

As for hitboxes, what's your point? That Steam games have them? Really you need to work on your debating skills before you lecture someone who actually knows what they are talking about

Amazing how you're talking about me being ignorant, when you don't seem to have read this at all:

The question arises, why is hit detection so complicated on the server? Doing the back tracking of player positions and dealing with precision errors while hit detection could be done client-side way easier and with pixel precision. The client would just tell the server with a "hit" message what player has been hit and where. We can't allow that simply because a game server can't trust the clients on such important decisions. Even if the client is "clean" and protected by VAC (Valve-Anti-Cheat), the packets could be still modified on a 3rd machine while routed to the game server. These "cheat proxies" could inject "hit" messages into the network packet without being detected by VAC (a "man-in-the-middle" attack).
THERE CANNOT BE CLIENT-SIDE HIT REGISTRATION!

Every arguement I have had on these forums has been the same. First some nonsensical crap not backed up by any evidence followed by an insult of ones arguing skills, and in the end no one is even discussing the damn topic anymore.

I'm sick of all of these morons. I was open to discussion, and you just had to start throwing random insults around. Funny that you're questioning other people's debating skills, when you're not debating at all

Oh well, I guess that people here can't have a discussion without insulting people to make their arguements look stronger

What are you talking about - client side calculation is done solely in Medal of Honor for example. While that was its associated pros and cons CS for example relies completely on server side prediction without cross reference to the client - therein lies the problem, if you can't see that then there is no point in even arguing with you
If you cannot argue your point then don't waste my time trolling

You do realise that if Valve implemented client-side hit registration, people like the myg0t community will have a field day? Maybe it worked in MoH, I don't know, never played it, by I could easily imagine how many people would abuse being able to send fake messages that they hit someone. And you can't "cross-reference" it, because the client and server will have different results. servers with 100 tick have no problems with hit registration. Most of the time the problem arises from people meddling with their rates.

You mean the Source engine. Steam is the method that they deliver the patches and other content to you. CSS has stats, they are not global like they are in BF2. Instead they are local based on what server you play on. You can be #1 in many servers, but you have to play in them.

It also took a long long long time for CSS to get to where it is now. I am member of the steampowered forums and a lot of unhappy kids in there. They really let Valve have it for months and months because they did not like this or that. The only difference really is that Valve did not change the game to make the noobs happy, instead basically kept the game the way it always was. The AWP (L96A1) is 1 shot anywhere and you die, a lot of new people complained, and it is still the same to this day. CSS has a learning curve where in BF2 that learning curve is almost gone.

CS is renowned for cheats and hacks...........there is no argument as far as CS vs BF2 goes in that area BF2 has cheats im sure but not near as many as CS has and will always have.

I think I must magically play on just the right CSS servers that I've only ever seen one cheater in two years of playing the game. CS1.6 was pretty bad for cheaters, but Source is alright.

As for rankings on CSS servers, there is a partial implementation called HLstatsX. Each server has their own set of ranks and they get implemented into global rankings. For example, here's my global rank, and here are my stats for the server I exclusively play on.

Counter-Strike may be renowned for cheats, but I feel it is because it has a larger community, and has been a long established game. The more people you have playing a game, the more cheaters, simple really.

I love the way people are saying BF2 has more cheaters, CSS has crap net code, this is rubbish, that sucks. I don't see much evidence though, like normal, people making comments that they think the community believes.

I guarentee you, that the majority of players of these games, are not members of a forum, and have had little or no problems with their game. It is only us "hardcore" players, who love our games so much, that we scrutinise them with a magnifying glass, that we could find fault in the most perfect of games.
