A couple of nights ago I played on a Special Forces only server - 64 player maps (each map played twice) – and during my time on the server our side lost every one. Here are the reasons why (with comments):
I do think I’m an astute observer – so my point? Cheap and easy tactics (points 3, 4 and 5) are, I believe, a form of stat padding. Combine this with a repeat of the same map with the same sides and you’ve pretty much doubled your points. The speed with which the enemy were on us (or had already taken a spawnpoint) also suggests some tweaking of the server settings. I’m no expert, but is there some way the admin can delay one side first joining the map, just as they can maybe determine what side you end up on?
I’m expecting the usual replies of “well that’s just war” or “it’s only a game”. Don’t even bother. If I get 1,500 at the start of a game of Monopoly and you get 3,500 (as well as three rolls of the dice before me and occasional dipping in the bank), who’s more likely to win?
- The majority of the other team’s ranks were way above ours. I’ve seen this on a few servers where I continually end up on a badly experienced team – particularly Wake Island-only servers. Can this be determined by the admin as players join a game?
- The sides were not swapped for the second round of the map. OK the guys running the game can do exactly what they want but if they’ve racked up the points in the first round they can do it again in the second. As for us changing tactics, this was difficult based on the next three reasons. Also I didn’t want to leave the server as I wanted to play all of the SF maps and I wanted to see what the other side did next.
- The other team base-raped the SAS non-cap base on Warlord. They were on us suspiciously quickly with a tank and APC and then they arty’d the crap out of us.
- The other team spawn-camped the spawnpoint to the west of the SAS non-cap base in Night Flight. I think there are only two places that you spawn: at the top of a slope on one building, and behind a dumpster by the same building. Easy for another team to camp.
- The other team base-raped the submarine in Devil’s Perch. Again, suspiciously quickly, the other team were on us with an APC and several RIBs when we first spawned on the sub. So why not spawn at the spawnpoint on the east of the map? Well, because that was in enemy control when we first spawned on the map. Strange.
- We were crap… that includes me – just look at my stats. At least I can blame it on being a newb and my age - 40 years old. I’m sure it takes my brain several microseconds more to register that the person standing in front of me does not have a blue nickname hovering over his head
