Re: Combat requires very little skill?

While I agree that so-called tactics should be an important part of the game, it shouldn't be the be all and end all of an FPS. The huge deviation on the guns means that aiming just isn't part of the "skillset" in BF2. The learning curve such as it is mainly consists of learning the maps (and for some people the spawn points).
If I made the analogy of some sport, lets say I choose football as that is one of my favourites. Being in position is only half the game. Once you get in position you still need individual skill, to beat your marker, intercept the pass or w/e.
For sure you shouldn't be able to win if you aren't in a position to, but its a little sad that that is all it really comes down to.
I would love to see all the guns in BF2 pumped to the level where consistent headshots were possible. Sadly BF2 is lacking in what I love about some FPS games, namely dueling. A situation where two equally matched players really duke it out and the best player really wins. This happens to some extent with inparticular jets and helos but it is rare on the ground. Normally that comes down to who has the most guys, and which team has an APC backing them up

i think to do good in combat, you will need other people from your team backing you up, just for like support, and if you get hurt, their might be a medic etc.. so i think the best way to stay alive in combat is to have your team mates with you!

Isn't it how that is in real life? And how it should be?

A platoon of Marines in a better firing position with better weapons will beat a couple of insurgents armed with light weapons in a firefight.

The game is based on real warfare, so why wouldn't that be the case? What kind of "equalizer" are you looking for?

My main problem, once again, is not with teamwork being effective. The problem is that there is very little to no scope for individual talent to shine in BF2. You could be the best shot in the world and still lost in BF2 because the guns are simply not very good.

In warfare, again what the game is based on, there is also little to no scope for individual talent to shine either, all units (even skilled snipers) rely on someone else for vital information on the battlefield.

A sniper may be the best shot in his unit, but he is useless without his spotter, or information from other units on where his targets are.

I'm not trying to pull the "in real life" card, I am just saying that the game is based on real wafare, so it should reflect it somewhat in gameplay dynamics.

I don't think combat really has gotten dumbed down or based on luck. Its just that these maps have been played and played since the game was released. Everyone knows the likely places people are going to be and the routes they will take to get there.

Re: Combat requires very little skill?

I'm not going to be discouraged since my own states are highly combat-based, but combat is quite easy in Vanilla BF2. I've been playing Operation Peacekeeper, and that mod has a considerable increase in recoil per weapon, and the use of semi-automatic fire. Deviation is such a key, and proning to properly aim that it makes vanilla BF2 look like a joke.

I consider myself a fairly good combatant, but I use the skills that all of us use. I jump around corners to evade the typical n00b spray, and counter-attack with the DAO or rifle for an easy kill. I've pretty much mastered every class at killing people, even engineers with pistols.

Then, when I jump onto a mod with realistic recoil or what not, my numbers take a huge dive. I usually end up fairly mediocre, with one or two lucky rounds from whoring a vehicle. I have to say that normal BF2 is quite easy combat-wise, however, I believe that playing it for nearly 10 months has also honed me those skills.

The final verdict is based on the experience of the player in that game type. If you play like a medic for a year straight, and still suck, then you need to try different classes. I always balance out the playing time on all of my classes, and constantly use kits off the ground when I'm scramling for ammo on a reload. Makes the game fun, and more exciting then playing the "role" of a combatant, or the "role" of a medic.

Good to hear the views from both sides, the game needs to find a balance between the two. (Not that both sides can even agree here) Thanks for your inputs, sight you soon.

I pulled out 34-4 on Wake with AK47, and people keep saying that the guns aren't good...

hey, this isn't CS anymore, try to go prone and use your ironsight.

Speaking of CS, stop/move/headshot is not skill, it's oversimplified ridiculousness.

SKILLZ in CS such as bunnyhop sniping just about take away all realism in a military arcade game.

I can no longer dive through windows to get out of tight spots, i cant jump and fire, I cant even jump and grab hold of the rope for the climbing hook! and no matter which weapon you choose now it has almost the exact same chance of killing than any other. Hardly any aim necessary.

I still like the game, hoping one of these mods will give me some intense combat, at the moment this game is balanced so that noobs and idiots can play easier. Boo freaking hoo.

Would like to add that changing squad spawning is going to make it even worse, ok some people abuse it, like some people abused jumping and firing and some people abused base raping. You dont have to pull all our teeth out just because some people are obsessed with sweets. The reason I like it is because trying to get somewhere secretly with your squad EA is pritty freaking difficult when you got some hand of god artillary that requires less skill than your programmers have.

You guys make me laugh you want to call me a noob find me on the battlefield and prove yourself. I've been gaming since most of you were in nappys and it sounds like most of you still are.

P.S I've got 3 kids that also use this account and alot of my mates, you think I care? I did for the first 2 months maybe lol. since then i've dropped 5000 places and yes my kill/death rate has suffered, but unlike the above i also have a life.

The life you spend on an internet forum and playing a game you just talked about?

Now we know what "having a life" means.
