But isn't it true that if you had a good pilot/gunner, you could be more effective?

As I stated above, you could try making a squad when you're in a chopper, and inviting whoever gets in there with you into it. Then you can use voice to communicate and preform better. If he's a noob, you can teach him.

I do this all the time. I had a great BR file that showed the difference a single round can make to a noob gunners preformance. In the begining, he was chaingunning tanks. By the end, he was bingoing choppers with TVGMs consitantly. It also included several pounces on the enemy's solo attack chopper.

Not the smart ones who attack everything from the perimeter. If you get the occasional solo '*******' type, once you get taken down, you'll never get off the ground. You can usually find those guys on the 24/7 FHM server playing Chinese.
Be realistic about it. "Smart" isn't one sided. A smart 2 man crew can hang around perimeters just as easily as a soloer can, but the crew can fire, maneuver, and close to gun range, as well as make those long range pick shots.

That said, I can see one instance where soloists would be a major asset... low player number comp matches. Tying up 2 players for a single asset is a disadvantage when you don't have many players. If this is the case you're talking about, then I agree that soloists are vital. In large pubs tho, I'd much rather see crews up there.

I have to agree on that for reasons you mentioned.

In all honesty, it depends on the solo'er you're playing but I concede that all things being equal, odds favour the 2-man team. However, keep in mind that even then, it's usually a game of "I saw you first"... ;-)

Doesn't the whole game basicly boil down to who saw who first and what you do about it?

It's really who prones first and doesn't get owned by his own gun's deviation going out of control who wins.

These are two very respectable posts. I know both these guys are solo chopper entusists and conseding a point like this is very mature and speaks volumes about their ability to be useful community members.

                  Kudos ta ya both.

Not true. I've often scored more points on Sharki by being a Medic. Thats where my few gold medals have come from.

I'll admit it's easier to score points in a heli, but if I'm running around reviving all the people you kill, healing them with medic packs, and capping flags, as well as killing almost as many people with my AK-101, then my scoer is guarenteed to be higher.

I was kidding. However, many a time have I encountered an enemy and got a few hits in, then he turns around and prones and mows me down with about 1 health bar remaining.

I can't get a good passenger no matter what I do.. If i'm pilot... I get a guy who doesn't know how to work a camera missle... and will shoot cannons at tanks.. and if they even know what a camera missle IS, sometimes they will shoot it, and I just see the missle go straight (So I know they don't know how to work it ).

If i'm gunner, I get a guy who goes straight PAST the AA... tanks.... cars.... helis.... (puts his back to them) and flies around like a madman, going 100mph past people... doing really random movements... while he expects me to actually kill people, and he thinks "gunner position" is where you look to aim a camera... or the crosshairs.

(If you didn't know... in between the gunner position and crosshairs, but slightly closer to crosshairs, is where you aim the shot for the camera)

Kind of stupid... lol, but I just don't see why people will TK for a vehicle, and then go off and just die within 5 seconds... I actually had this happen. I was on vent. with a friend, I was gunner. My friend got tk'd, and right after takeoff this guy rams into a BH and we die.

People should practice in single player, before they go off into a game and not know what to do. The people that suck, I don't care.. everyone has sucked at one point.. and I just go with it. But it just so happens, alot of people that aren't so good happen to TK for things (jets...helis... you name it).

Are there any good pilots here that like wake (I prefer gunner)? And by good, I mean someone that stays back from the action, aims me for cameras, gives me a steady base for gunning (by steady, doesn't mean you can't strafe, I just mean the jerky movements), and has awareness of what is going on around them.

Oh well, if you think you are a pretty good gunner or pilot and you love Wake, go to a server called "Dedicated Wake 24/7".
I love wake and i love attack choppers, i'm a pretty good gunner i can tv most things, probably hit 80-90% I'm not such a good pilot though, so if you fly im up for this

I have to say that one of the most discouraging experiences in the game is lining up a nice fat camera missle shot at an idling tank and then....nothing, or even worse the gunner is spraying it with the gun. I have oftimes been known to eject in a fit of despair when confronted with such a cruel situation, only to see the chopper spiral slowly up into the clouds with my neophyte companion...

I agree 100%. Nothing says "hey, here we are!" like spraying with the chaingun on tank from 100m away. I hate these gunners. I think BF2 needs a mandatory checklist tutorial before unlocking multiplay. You know how the game has that voiceover tutorial (ie., "The medic kit will allow you to heal the wounded and revive fallen comrades")? BF2 should require you to try everything in SP so that you acknowledge a feature's existence before entering the online battlefield. Knowledge is power, so why are so many pubbers retarded?

Re: People that go for choppers

I'm in no way the best overall pilot, I've seen my share of great opponents and friends flying, but I agree that most of those that sit and camp the helipad waiting for a helo, or don't do anything to help their team while offering air support, is prominent in this game.

It all comes down to points and how "cool" it is to fly! :) I recently bought "Apache Longbow Assault" for 5$ in a bargin bin, and I have tons of fun playing that game, so even something of this sort could help those that want to get better in the helos, be better.

As for the missiles, I don't think people realize that the missiles have the ability to maneuver, so I normally ask just before taking off if the person understands how to shoot them. If they don't, I practice run them through it, but never do I get peed at someone for missing the shots, as I am the first to admit at not being too great maneuvering them. I'm good, but there are some that just blow me away on how well they work them.

I dedicate as much of my time flying the helicopter because I love the idea of flying helicopters, and am a big fan of helicopter gunships, such as the Apache and the SuperCobra.

On the receiving end, the only helicopter I cringe seeing is the MI-8 or EuroForce's EuroCopter. Those cannons offer some of the most devistating attacks I've yet to see from any vehicle within Bf2. The others outmatch it in how well it performs and maneuvers, but overall is a great helicopter, and a force to be reckoned with...Sharqi spawn killing anyone? :)

Anyways, all in all, your best bet as a pilot is to ask the gunner if he knows how, and just expect him to do well. It's hit and miss, as is mostly with pilots. I can dodge and evade any A2A or AA site, and can perform fairly well against other pilots. I'll keep that IP in mind, and we'll have to team up and own some sh!t. My in-game name is mach-stem, if ever you've seen my fly, you'll know it's fun to watch and be gunner! :)

                                PEACE

Your best bet is to lead the target just as you would with any other weapon. Adjust the lead by how fast the missile flies, and always expect the pilot's next move: did he see you? if not, aim for the side or tail of the helo. If he did see you, adjust the shot to lead under him, because if he's a smart pilot, he'll try either dodging from left to right, or straight down. The explosion of the warhead can also do a significant amount of damage.

If you need to know, once the missile is shot, you can click anywhere within the reticle and re-center your missile's trajectory. I've been practicing lately on spinning the rocket in a corkscrew motion, this seems to be your best bet at getting better with it.

As for the cannons themselves, I always aim and lead for the cockpit and the front cannon of the opposing helicopter. 50% chance of you killing either the pilot or the gunner.

                                PEACE

Hence, why I always ask the gunner if he knows what he is doing! I'm the first to give the gunner the chance to practice the missiles, not every great pilot is an ass, you know!

Naw, prolly shouldn't mention that. Might stir things up too much.

I'm hoping they do somewhat what they did with the Cobra in BF Vietnam. They made the helicopter lose complete control once the pilot was out, however, most adapted and used it to their advantage by flying REALLY high.

I can't remember how many times I would take down jets with the helicopters in BF V, you rarely see this in BF2
