BF2 gun sound effects: The best ever made?

I'm getting really sick of playing FPS games (or any games with guns for that matter) with the same phony bologna gun effects ripped from sound libraries. How many times have we all heard the Doom3 shotgun sound effect? I can't count the number of movies and games I have heard this effect in. Although tbh it is a cool sounding effect; it's way too overused! One of my main beefs is the CS sound effects which have a pretty nasty contrast with the rest of the awesome sound effects in source. Since when did beating on a cardboard box count as the sound of a 45.? (UMP, MAC-10). The AK sounds like someone went to town in soundforge with a wav of a barking dog!

The shotgun in FEAR is another sound effect I have heard many many times. The rest of the gun sounds aren't that bad in FEAR and seem pretty original though. HL2 had terrible gun sounds too, although they were much better than Doom3's pathetic pea shooter effects. Then there's BF2... WOW! The first time I played the demo my jaw just dropped after hearing all the varied and realistic effects. Every weapon sounds, looks, and feels how it should and the third person sound effects are just the icing on the cake! These sounds are so good that I now use a BF2 soundpack for CS:S. Now these are some sounds that I would not mind being used over and over!

In conclusion, any developer that is working on an FPS game should realize that the gun sound effects (as well as the models and animations) can make or break an FPS game! Stop using crap hollywood effects!

Yay, a non-complainer! Andyeah, I guess you're right, I never really thought about it. CS is by far the worst, I head the damn m4 sounds in game after game. I never noticed until now, but the sounds in Bf2 are very original and sound good.

Some of the BF2 gun sounds are good. But the L85A1's sound is crap, and so are the G36 guns. There just isn't a lot of depth to them and they sound like someone punching a hole through a stack of paper.

The thing about CS/CS:S and for that matter any HL/HL2 game, if you didn't like the weapon sounds/skins you could mod them on your own (with little to no difficulty). In Day of Defeat I loaded the gun sounds from the movie Saving Private Ryan, for example, and haven't changed it since due to the sheer awesomeness.

If BF2 worked in the same fashion, I would mod the sounds in from the TV show 24.

I had the same opinion as you about the g36 guns and the L85 BEFORE I bought my X-Fi xtrememusic. Now these effects pack the punch that they are supposed to have and sound very good! The only effect that is lacking in the whole game to me is the l96. For the puny sound that it makes, it should have a silencer. But the "swoosh" effect it makes is cool. I always have my CS sounds modded somehow. I have never ever liked the CS sound effects from day one. Btw, how did you rip sounds from Saving Private Ryan without capturing the background noise? Black magic with soundforge or something?

That's one way to do it. However, I lucked out and found an already-made sound pack that somebody linked on the Steam forums. It's got the sounds of every gun shot/reload/shell ejection in the movie, plus various explosions, background city/artillery noises, random MG42 bursts in the background. The only sound I didn't like which I subsequently editted was the colt .45 one, sounded very bland.

I agree 100%. The sound effects in CSS are way better.

The remington shotgun has the best sound IMO...

Re: BF2 gun sound effects: The best ever made?

if you open up the actual sound files for the rifles and listen to them, they sound alot different than ingame
some of them sound like they stuck a mic next to the rifle and fired it

although i do have one complaint about the sounds for the game
                      theyre too quiet
the only weapons that are properly represented i guess, are the sniper rifles
i should be able to hear someone firing the g3 from half a mile away, not the 30 meters i think it is in game
but thats probably just because of the limit of hardware and the amount of sounds able to be rendered in game

                      cheers, im going home :)

Yeh I totally agree, sounds are very authentic. They are good because they don't try and pull and punches - they simply emulate the harsh "crack" of real gun sounds.

Hey on the subject of guns guys, can I ask a question?
I have noticed in videos that people have changed their sniper scope crosshair colour. How is this done? Changing the crosshair features in the menu seems to only affect non-sniper weapons.
                          Thanks

The 3rd person effects in BF2 are amazing, I'll agree on that one. Nothing like hearing a SAW rip through a silence, and then hear burts of gunfire all around.

Though, among the things they screwed up.. the L85A1, as others mentioned. I've had the opportunity to fire one of these, and have heard others firing them (real life, of course). They sound practically Nothing like they do in a "3rd person" form, but the "1st person" form of the effect is pretty close.

All-in-All, nothing beats out BF2 for sound effects... yet.

                            As for this:

You could either skin it to do so, or just download a replacement file for it.. I'm sure there are plenty of options.
