Hey serialbutcher, since you seem to have a bit of experience on the Essex AA, how do you have to aim it to be most effective?

Do you have to 'lead' the jet and aim in front of it so your missile sort of 'intercepts' it, or do you try to keep the locking box as close to the centre of your screen as possible?

Shoot missiles from front and back of the plane. Naturally front relies heavily on the angle, but Ive pulled out some "dumb" shots aswell.

Cannon. Ive noticed that if the jet is incoming straight at you, aiming at the spot between the nose and cockpit glass works great, and when the jet is sideways and you have to lead the target, it depends on the range, but aiming at the nose works in most cases aswell.

Essex cannon is a force to be reconned with, unfortunately skilled pilots usually outplay the cannoneer.

I totally agree w/ Chris, I try to aim the gun as he does, & I also try to "tap out" as many missiles as I can before he crosses me, pause firing the gun, & missiles if he crosses close (to let the gun cool, & not waste missiles on too high of an angle shot), then I pick right up where I left off (if I am still alive)

When I have a "lock", or "tone", w/ a good angle I try to pump the missles out "full auto" lol

The more of a "hard-on" the pilot has for you, the better it works

If he is just doin' loops w/ another jet you will probably just "ding" him once, & get his attention, he will go back for repairs, but if he has no resepect for the Essex gun, & means to "make you pay" & you are a good commander, he better know what he is doing

The best thing is to go Essex on Wake Island.
The jets come in to bomb and you wh0re them time and time agian.

Thank you.I did'nt know the proper name for the weapons system,just assumed everyone would understand"gunmount"and it's location.This thread has gone 3 pages and he still does'nt have an answer to his original question.Which was,"Where is the second Phalanx on the Essex on Iron Gator?"

If the jet tries to engage me directly with zero relative angle on my outbound gun solution, he will die pure and simple. Takes a few passes before the nooblets get creative with some angles.

I put the gun about one plane length ahead no matter what the plane is doing it will fly into the fire. Once the plane is past I launch 3 missiles only. Usually that is enough to kill. If the pilot is stupid enough to turn back for a second attempt I am at peace knowing he is soon to be my kill.

The ones I worry about are the smart ones who actually come at water level from the front of the carrier and pop up at the last minute to sweep the deck. It takes a little longer a more time but the payoff is worth it. Especially if they got me on the first pass.

The worst enemies I have faced are the few who diabolically use thier teammate's inbound attack as bait to draw my attention. They are the ones who come against me either out of the sun or at such a crazy inbound angle and slaughter me as i am cheerfully working on the noob who does not realize he is being set up as bait and me not understanding that until I see the second plane fly by after making a good kill on me.

One more secret.

Have the commander drop 3 supply boxes 1 minute apart into your airdefense well. That way your repair is instantaneous and can have you survive a direct TV missile shot hit. Your reloads are also instantaeous and you can literally bury the enemies in a storm of missiles.

Iron Gator isn't the Essex from BF2. Same name, different boat.

Yeah 1 pahlanx, & no arty. That's fine. You don't need it.

The APC on that level has 1 job, and that's to take out the AA on the Carrier.

Ah well, it could be worse.

Yeah, I've seen that happen before, I've also seen boat vs boat battles with ATs inside, while you have the MG blazing as well. Fun while it lasts until a jet or chopper makes mince meat out of you.
