Any decent pilot will come in against the Essex's air defenses at a severe acute angle out of the sun. If done right the gamer manning the CIWS will not be able to elevate in time to meet the threat or fail to detect the inbound vampire.

As a commander I scan regularly while on the CWIS to detect inbound enemy air and orient to that threat axis before they come into view.

Multipule engagements are possible as I have experienced several of those. But not too many as they usually pull off that tatic as wasteful; especially after a few well timed arty strikes killing them while they waiting for jets to respawn.

I guess I was "sharp" that day because, earlier in the day I damaged a J10 while US commander in Wake (just tryin' to get in some AA time), & then the pilot started "picking on me", he killed me a few times, but I always inflicted great damage on him, then I got used to tracking him, & I killed him, & had a surprise waiting for him on the runway

He called me a ("N" on my daddies laptop)

Then he came @ me kamikaze, ramming me several times (unsucessfully on 1 occasion), but I would always inflict enough damage on him to get credit for the kill too

The time he failed to ram me I got credit for killin' him because he crashed into the deck right next to me while I was shooting him LOL

I guess some pilots uber ego's get the best of them, & they take a surface to air death as a personal insult

i lvoe going into the 2nd essex gun ... pilots never notices anyone in there and think no one is tehre so they dont even look at it and fly nice and straight for my missiles

the Phalanx CIWS is a mix of "Rolling airframe" SAM Launchers and "Vulcan Minigun" AAA Cannons in the game


but the game is not real life, where these AAA/SAMs are in the game is the same place where 2 of the 3 Phalanx CIWS AAA systems are in real life, then there are two "Rolling Airframe" SAM Launchers and 2 "Sea Sparrow" Missile Launchers

I am glad I am not the only 1 who has experienced the fact that The Essex AA can beat (postive k/d ratio @ end of round) air power when combined w/ the commander tools (against some pilots)

btw, I was the highest ranking officer in the server (automatically makes you a target), was commander, made no effort to hide, we were winning, & even merely distracting the commander is beneficial to your cause, so in addition to 7 ground to air kills I killed 2 snipers, & 2 choppers, I was also blown up by an APC rocket that slipped by me, & C4 by a guy that I saw comming, but didn't see on deck, & thought he was bellow deck but he was on that catwalk, & I didn't realize you could take it around to the fantail, ended up 11-7, or something like that

Was really interesting, & some peeps think commander is boring

Why they be pickin' on me???? LOL

No, the Essex is the combination of Phalanx CIWS and RAM launchers in the game. So both he and the game are right in referring to them collectively as the Essex.

Yeah, works especially well if the other Essex AA is manned as well, as that will make the enemy jet release it's flares, then it leaves you free to shoot all your missiles up it's tailend as it flys away.

The Essex gun is obviously "based" on the Phalanx CWIS, but technically it is NOT the CWIS

It seems to be an amalgamation, or hybrid of 2 weapons systems

You missed another spelling mistake in his post. Your homework assignment is to find it.
It's no secret that Wargimp isn't a perfect speller, and neither am I. But his posts are coherent and easy to understand, which is more than I can say for the post he was commenting on. I'll spare you the embarrassment of pointing out errors in your post and hope you realize that "Grammar Nazi" means someone that's overly picky with respect to grammar. I believe that, I have fought besides you, & know you to be a outstanding soldier w/ skillz, who grabs gold, & silver most rounds w/ out getting killed much

However, it seems that the majority of pilots who think they are 1337 455 MF's will get their arse's shot off

My main point was that if a guy is commander, & can see the jet coming on the scan he can dish out punishment to the average avaitor, that I don't see as worth it to them except for defending their honor (bruised ego), they are going to get 2 points max, & even if I don't kill them, they are flyin' away smokin', & some 1 else may finish the job lol

But I understand, after you have been artry raped, you gotta try to get some "payback" right?

I have flown in the gunner seat of the bomber w/ ACES, that will fly 20ft. above the water, come up, & take the Essex gun out first, then rape the hell out of the ship, so I don't think taking the gun "head-on" is the best way of dealing w/ it
