Are we on the verge of revolution?

I'm hoping the PC online FPS world is going to get shaken seriously sometime in the very near future. The Battlefield games have been great but it seems innovation in the series has slowed somewhat, all we seem to get is better graphics with different skins/weapons and a few minor additions. You can argue about VOIP, squads and Commander mode but these are minimal additions given the core gameplay hasn't changed in the last 4+ years since the release of BF1942.

We've now got more details on BF2142, and they seem all fine and dandy, but I can't help but feel that DICE and EA are playing it safe with the BF series at the moment. I don't blame them, its obviously working financially for them. But I feel we've only reached the tip of the iceberg for online FPSing and hopefully Frontlines: Fuel of War, Quake Wars or the upcoming Farcry sequel will blow the genre out of the water.

Maybe I'm asking too much, but driving/running from point A to B and standing next to a pole till it changes to your teams flag is getting a bit old for me. I want objectives which require team members having to work together, progressive spawn caps on a map rather than just trying to go the long way round and avoid everyone, and a game where victory is not just a matter of killing the crap out of the other team but instead actually thinking about your next move.

Feel free to tell me to bugger off/play CS/love it or leave it or whatever makes you feel better. Or you can debate civily.

Well I'm assuming a lot and going out on a limb, but I don't see there being much in the way of evolution to the core gameplay, just BF2 with different skins, some new vehicles, etc.

They have not said it will be anything but the same "capture flag, rinse, repeat" formula that they've had from day dot, which is fine, and heaps of people like that gameplay, but I reckon it's time for the genre to move on and create a little depth. And hopefully in the next 6 months that desire will be reached, I'm just not sure it'll be BF2142 that delivers it.

Teehee. I had to put that in there as it seems anytime someone has criticism or makes suggestion on BF2, the standard response is often CS:Source. Have no idea why....

Playing CSS after playing BF2 is strangely refreshing. Plus it's a good game to play if you're eating since you can eat between rounds.

This is a step in the wrong direction. I don't want a separate buddy list for each game, so I use xfire. Why doesn't everyone else?

I agree with you, mlkmnz. As much as I've enjoyed BF1942, Desert Combat and BF2 over these past few years, I think there has been a lack of innovation, particularly where the Game Modes are concerned.

In reading the latest details for BF2142, I wasn't really dazzled. I'll still buy the game and reserve judgment until after I've racked up enough hours to fully appreciate everything it has on offer but if we're once again limited to Conquest Mode, I'm probably going to be disappointed.

For me, it's not so much that Conquest mode gets boring -- I still enjoy the hell out of BF2 -- it's that I think there's tremendous untapped potential that could be realised by creating truly unique and challenging game modes; modes that require intelligence and creativity in order to be competitive. There's only so much strategy required to do well in Conquest Mode and once you develop a strong appreciation for what works and what doesn't, the constant desire for all-new challenges can limit enjoyment of the game and reduce its lifespan.

There have been quite a few threads within this forum concerning ideas for new game modes and some of them have been really amazing. When I read those threads, I find myself thinking, "Man, that'd be fantastic!" In contrast, when I read the latest details for BF2142, I felt more or less indifferent.

Maybe others would disagree but I just think there's enormous potential in the Battlefield franchise that isn't being realised. I'm worried that those behind the scenes have decided, "Hey, we've got a winning formula now. To hell with innovation; that's too risky. Let's just run this baby into the ground."

I agree, as long as People are paying EA to play their games, theres no need for them to innovate, Just look at the expansion and booster packs for bf 1942 and Bf2, The Sims franchise, Fifa 93-06???

They know how to milk it

I do not believe that 2142 will have anything super spectacular. I thought I read somewhere that it was going to have the same engine as BF2, if that is the case just be prepared for new skins, new models, and new bugs of course.
There will be a strong change in gaming with the advent of the M2 socket chips by AMD. This in conjunction with the new Physics chips that are being tested and the SLi stuff that seems to be mainstream now. The Revoluti0n started a long time ago, we are about .25% of the way there. Just wait until 2008, the games released at that point are going to make our current list look like PONG.

There are 4 words that if posted and were true, would truely shake up the online gaming revolution:

                            DUKE NUKEM FOREVER, RELEASED!

I mean come on, dont the thought of using a shrink ray on an enemy then squashing them with your foot, make ya go, "oh yeah......"

lol, duker's will know what i mean.

I really hope they do make 2142 something "different". The repetetiveness in BF2 is starting to kill me, one of the reasons WoW(aka world of grindcraft) is drawing me away.Doesnt seem like they've spent enough time making 2142 to let it live up to our expectations. Gaming markets just need to get it together and release some good crap. I am really hoping 2142 delivers, chances of me playing it are about 99% though...it better be good though is all im saying!
