7900gt has 500mhz on memory and 100mhz on core compared to 7800gt

I've got to admit, I'm pretty surprised by how high the clocks are on the 7900GT. Hell, I only found out about their release two days ago and I just got my 7800GT a couple of weeks ago. But that's how it goes and I'm not going to fret over it. Someone I know is going to upgrade to the 7900GT and sell me their 7800GT so I can run in SLi, for about $130 less than I had been planning on spending so it's all good.

Well i'm excited over the new 7600's, the have clock freq's in the 7800 range but they cost only 200!

It's not worth spending the money on a top of the line card for only one reason 1) Within a couple of months it will be overshadowed by the next card for the same price. Of course it'll play better. You probably wont ever experience any form of lag or stutter on any current game with the 7900GTX and it'll handle Quake Wars perfectly, but so will the 7800GTX and even a single 7800GT on a well optimized computer. Two 7800GT's should be equal if not better than any available GTX, but two GTX's would of course be MUCH better. But two GTX's is over $1000 and too overpowered for any game coming out in a very very long time.

I can't currently play COD2 at all high settings with my 7800GT but my computer has become very sluggish ever since my data drive died and I've been relying on my Raptor for everything. I've even maxed out my storage so much I can't defrag. I'm pretty sure that once I replace my data drive, and do a fresh install then optimize, everything will play fine. But even if it didn't, and I'm not afraid to pay money for peformance, I still wouldn't replace this couple of months old card. I was even going to wait to do sli because there's other cool things I can get for my computer that ranked above gaining an extra 10fps for a few Benjamins, but since my friend is going to upgrade I'll be able to go SLi for a lot cheaper.

But it's all up to the user. If money isnt a problem and you enjoy upgrading (and aren't just doing it due to the hype/unhappiness with recent previous upgrades) then rock on =)

EDIT: PS, imagine these senarios. 1) Driver support for the 7900GT and GTX doesn't mix well with BF2 and you experience degregation. 2) The next patch or a followup patch for BF2 finds huge optimization fixes and even people with 7600GT's and under can now play at maxed specs full res... just like you! and 3) Future game releases just simply have better optimization like Quake Wars is expected to have.

It's not likely, but possible.

I just ordered my BFG 7900GTX OC from NewEgg! I simply couldn't resist after seeing the Leadtek 7900GTX go OUT OF STOCK already! But hey, I got mine, and it will be here tomorrow [Friday]! Finally I can kick this lump of steaming crap EN7800GT Dual out the window!! w00t!

I've got a 7800 GTX SLI rig. Here are the benchmark results with SLI and without. My SLI result for 3DMark06 is in my sig (6000+), didn't do the bench without SLI.

As you can see the results with SLI are pretty good. That said, I won't be upgrading to a 7900. Since I can play basically any game on the highest settings at 1600X1200 already there isn't much point to drop another grand on 2 cards that aren't DX10 compatible. I'll wait for at least another generation or two to upgrade or build a new ultimate gaming rig. If someone has a 5 or 6 series card then an upgrade would make sense. When I spec out a gaming rig I try to make sure it will play the best games for 2-3 years and don't do any upgrades in between that time.

What do you mean by "Basically" when you say it can basically play any game out there. Do you have any problems with any games, or did you say that because you can't guarantee it'll play upcoming games. Also, what res are you running at?

Just remember that you can step up to a gtx for about 150 bucks right? At that price it'd be hard for me to say no, so I won't.
